Coburg Football Club was established in 1891.
They joined the VFA/VFL in 1925. They have played in 15 Grand
Finals, being premiers in 1926, 1927, 1928, 1970, 1974, 1979, 1988 and
1989.
Coburg aligned with Richmond Football Club at the
beginning of 2001. They are
now known as The Coburg Tigers, and they wear Richmond’s black jumper
with a yellow sash as an alternative strip, still playing the majority of
games in their traditional navy blue with a red sash.
In the inaugural season they took a while to gel, but
after a shaky start found success. They
won the last four games of the season to finish with a record of eleven
wins and nine losses, to make it into the finals
for the first time in a decade.
Coburg players had individual success in their first
season too. Richmond player
Ezra Poyas won the JJ Liston Medal for the VFL’s best and fairest
player. Coburg player
Kristian De Pasquale won the Fothergill-Round medal as the best player
under 21 in the VFL, as well as being chosen in the Victorian
representative side that played South Australia.
In the second year they had a record of sixteen wins
four losses, and one win away from the grand final.
Backman Dean Talbot was runner up in the JJ Liston medal.
With a solid core of players and growing confidence
Coburg Tigers are looking to build on their early success and go one further in
2003.
