Thomson Dow

All these players that are no good. How would we field a team? Some of them have to play. Dow no good, Mansell no good , Hugo no good, Campbell no good, Sonsie soft, m Rioli no good, banks no good. And McAuliffe is a gun, champion apparently. And Bauer is a gun forward apparently.

Understandably this thread is very negative...he is being smashed.

But let me play devil's advocate for no real reason other than to be one of the only RFC members backing him in.

Some here and externally have compared him to Shane Edwards. "Ha...he's not good enough to carry Shedda's boots" I hear you saying. But that's referring to 300 game, 3-time premiership legend Shane Edwards. But think back to Shane Edwards after 26 games...remember Shank? The guy who couldn't kick, couldn't tackle, couldn't compete in the midfield...go back and read the Shane Edwards thread circa 2010/11.

Thomson Dow is a number 5 or 6 ranked mid. He will never be the number 1 guy but we are currently asking him to be. Shedda evolved into a good player after 60-70 odd games and after being protected by strong mids such as Tuck, Jackson, Coughlan, Lids and Foley (and Cousins for 2 years)...then a couple of blokes call Cotchin and Martin came along. Imaging Shank as our first mid in 2011...playing alongside Mitch Farmer, Jerome Webberley and Ben Nason.

Not for one second and I saying he will evolve into Shane Edwards. I'm just saying let's judge him after 50 games and when he is playing alongside Tarranto, Hopper, Ross and a couple of new strong mids from the next draft or two.

I'm backing him in...Thomson Dow will be a good solid player for the RFC.

let the pile-on begin...hehehe...bring it!

reckon he’s going ok and again he’s another who would benefit from some big bodies around him , that again into me is a big question why he like other cubs is so light , he’s strength is ment to be the clearance with his good hands , yes been light helps with his agility , however last night was a replay of this season where his coat hanger frame just gets moved out of position to easily , I don’t get it why we arm an inside mid with such a light frame . We do need better , however he has improved dramatically over 10 months , hopefully he can rise again , not confident, however I’d give him another year in front of a few of our injury riddled old stars

Agree houston. You can't really assess a player's worth until 50 games +

Yeah, not seeing it with Dow, looks like a bust to me.

Too slightly built, questionable disposal, not quick enough - just can't see what he is meant to offer.

DS
This whole slightly built thing is a bit of an overkill.

Zac butters would be 181 and 70 something kilos and kills it. Dow would be 183 and high seventies or 80 and is no where near as dynamic.

He is showing potential and can do some good stoppage work. He can get the ball out of tight spots. Just not getting his hands on it enough and his kicking is average at best. He stood in front of us last night and his still very thin - surely he can get some more muscle on. No writing him off but he better get going pretty quickly, he is just hanging in at present.

I think thats filling your half glass full cup up with someone elses water.

Edwards always showed that he had something that was above average, speed being the big one. Dow is a different player to Sheds, he's in and under but is too small to play it, doesn't have the pace to play a similar role to Butters, and doesn't have the vision or ability by foot. Sheds got the nickname of Shank, due to taking difficult kicks and not getting them right, ie. those errors stick in the mind. A bit like Campbell yesterday, the 2 turnovers where he didn't get the penetration to go over the top in the 2nd quarter stick out, but out of his 17 disposals, he had 12 that were efficient, so only 3 of the remaining 15 were inefficient. I don't see any aggression from Dow to take the game on.

He just looks a dime a dozen VFL midfielder to me.

Interesting going back to his draft profile. The issues he had were foot skills (still there), strength (still there) and consistency (still there). The reason why his consistency is down and why we constantly see him with 14-19 disposals in so many games, is he doesn't link up. If you are a midfielder that can't link the game through the midfield then you won't make it. His contested possession rate is fine, but his uncontested possession rate is so far below average in the AFL. This should be the easy bit but it isn't and hasn't changed since he was drafted.

There is a famous quote that comes to mind here. When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.

Similar issues with RCD.

Well written, I'm of exactly the same opinion & would add Hugo into conversation. Anyone that believes Hugo hasn't come on this season really needs to make urgent appointment with Specsavers . Amen

Dow ain't the future.
But he'll keep getting games.
Hoping, possibly beyond hope, that he can show something but I think we've already seen all he has in his bag of tricks.
