Posted a similar thread about trading our picks for future picks. We have great depth and rookies to upgrade we should be trading out to have a great set of picks in a future year or a blue chip pick in coming years.

If we have 18,36 and Gold Coast 39. How many points is that. Could be worth a pick 6 to 10 in next years draft. Would the hawks go for it as they need to replace some older players

At any rate I would possibly try and do this for several years to stockpile some lower picks to try and some blue chippers

The only way a club holding a top 10 pick would be interested is if they had academy players high on the list. So really only GWS and they have Essendon's first round currently at 12 and their first round at 13. So no chance for mine.

Maybe you could do a trade with say North or Hawthorn for their first round pick and we give a player and pick 18

NExt years draft is fairly shallow the ‘experts’ recon. I say keep going as we have been. Nothing fancy, just prioritise a couple of good talls to develop. The draft costs us nothing and we’ve smashed it the last few years. We end up generating future picks by trading out players who we don’t want every year. Ellis, short, Maca are on my chopping block right now to make way for some young outside players (who can kick)

I am just really keen on stock piling picks. Picks 18, 36 can deliver decent players but do we need more depth players at this time

Our list of depth and emerging players is long and covers all positions. Naish, Collier Dawkins CC’s, balta, Chol, soldo, Ross, Higgins, Pickett, egg

As a scenario I would try and stock pile picks for a blue chipper or rebuild in 3/4 years with 3 or 4 picks in the 10 to 20 range
Year 1. Trade our 18 and 36 for a next year pick 10 to 15. Target Essendon, crow, power, hawks who need youth
Year 2. Trade our 18 and 36 and for a next year pick 10 to 15. Trade out the 10to 15 pick above for a 10to 15 pick in the following year
Year 3 Trade our 18 and 36 and for a next year pick 10 to 15. Trade out the 10to 15 pick above for a 10to 15 pick in the following year. Trade out the 10to 15 pick above for a 10to 15 pick in the following year
Year 4. We have 4 picks between 10 to 15 to restock. Two of these picks could be used for trades to get you a top 5 pick or a top liner back from gws or suns

you are forgetting we have GC 3rd rounder this year, so 3 picks inside top 40

We have Houli turning 32 next birthday, Jack R and Sheda both rising 31, Cotchin and Rance soon to be 30.
I don't mind the idea of stock piling picks but think with the age demographic of our best players we should be looking at bringing in another Lynch or Prestia for 2021 season, and keep nailing the draft like we have been doing.
Clarke and Hartley have got the runs on the board, i'd be quite happy to go with our current strategy.

The problem with this strategy is the presumption that all drafts are equal.

e.g. last years pick 12 would be probably worth this years pick 5 due the the depth of quality picks at the high end of last years draft.

There is always the gamble that the club trading the pick may do better than expected and we end up with a poorer pick.

Unless the deal is stacked very much in our favor we should keep doing what we have been doing.

We might want to wait until draft night to see if crazy sos gives us a deal to good to refuse.

I think we’re in a great position this draft - live trading has made late first round picks that bit more valuable as teams see players they had ranked top 10 sliding and try to get their hands on them - Carlton gave Adelaide a good deal for their pick and Saints were also after that pick (probably for RCD). I can see this trend continuing so we can sit back and see if someone makes us an offer too good to refuse. If they do we can probably still take three picks inside 40 (Ellis compo, 2nd rounder, GC 3rd rounder), if not we’ll probably get a pretty good player.

*smile* I would love Brad Hill. Probably an upgrade on Houli/Ellis too. Don’t think we can afford him but would be perfect.

What ever market value is accept. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Point is that at the moment we have great depth and young talent. In the old days we had list cloggers but now we have list blockers Naish Collier Dawkins, turner, Pickett, egglosse smith, markov, soldo, balta will struggle to get a game due to opportunity. Our picks 18, 36 in the next 3 years will struggle to get any opportunity.

Defer these picks into future years for a reboot or a blue chip selection.

I think you have to make a minimum number of changes each year. Maybe three changes but these could be used on rookie upgrades. Chol, egg, Baker Not sure how the rookie upgrades work in regards to what picks you need to use.

So possibly our picks will be 18, 19(Ellis compo but could be 37 depending upon the afl lotto) 36, 38 gc 3 rd rounder. I would be sending them all out for picks in later years.

With respect Thomas The, it seems nuts to me not to do the thing we are currently very good at and just draft talent. We need a Cotch, Edwards, houli, Rance, dusty, Jack replacement ready to go in the next couple of years we need to draft them now. We have seemingly covered midfield issues in one draft, but why not continue to back our system, draft best possible and trade out those who don’t fit. The system you propose seems convoluted and complex when we have just drafted extreme talent like Ross, stack, cujo, Baker and Balta with run of the mill picks. Our system works. Why not use it? An early pick does not garrentee a gun. Why not trade for a gun if all else fails? Young players cost bugger all and we will have time to develop them.

Having early picks gives you two options
1) access to the best players
Agreed that top picks don’t always equate to stars. we have somewhat proven that over the years but the cream is at the top
Our best players for mine in the last ten years have been Martin, rance , reiwoldt, Cotchin, grimes. 4 top picks and a rookie
2) picks that can be used to trade for star players.
Clubs will accept two top 20 picks for a star. Pick 18 and 36 won’t cut it

I just really rate our list at the moment and think we have a group that can challenge over the next 3 to 4 years

Adding a player at pick 18 & 36 for the next 3 years I feel has a 1/6 chance of breaking past our current top 30 players

Are there any Jacks we can pick up in the first 3 rounds, to complement Jack Reiwoldt, Jack Graham, Jack Higgins, and Jack Ross.?
Not to mention all those years we drafted Jack Schitt....

I'd be fairly content to trade up the draft in either year but we will still take 2-3 picks as a minimum in the draft. If we could use Butler and the GWS pick to trade into the 20's, I'd do it. Or if we can use Butler or someone else to trade the Ellis pick up a bit then I'd do it.

We drafted Cujo and Balta in the 20's, Higgins in the late teens. If we can somehow get 3 picks inside the top 30, then I think we would be going well.

The thing we have going for us, and our young players will know and will be being told this, is that a lot of spots in our Best 22 will be created over the next 3-4 years and those that shine will get their chances. We have proven as well that if you are good enough, then you get into the team, so I don't see that players will get pissed off and want to leave due to lack of opportunity, and if they do, are they really the type we want around the club?

But would a player picked at 18 or 36 improve the list within 3/4 years. I mean what are we missing that is a large concern at the moment that we need to draft.

Bundle our assets up now for future year picks or a blue chip selection

Someone mentioned Dylan Williams a while back, I’m becoming very intrigued. Bit of De Goey about him.
