I wasn't aware of the situation in the Maldives ...but DFAT rating has it safer than the whole of India except Kashmir. I haven't head of people cancelling plans to go to India lately. Aren't the resorts in Maldives designed to keep tourists as seperate from the locals as possible (resort staff the exception)

You should know by now that there exist here flat-earthers, anti-vaxxers and climate change deniers who will never miss an opportunity to promote more conspiracy theories.

Exercise increased caution in Maldives due to terrorism.

Terrorist groups may conduct attacks with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities. Attacks may occur on remote islands which could lengthen the response time of authorities.

Maldives travel advisory

Maldives tries to fight off travel alerts as tourists stay away

Same level as Denmark and France.

...which is in line with my original post on this subject. It wasn't something that needed to be disputed.

So we are in Japan and spent Christmas day with my wife and daughter catching the train to Tokyo downtown and Shibuya and back to Shinjuku where the hotel is. Apparently it's a thing in Japan to have KFC on Christmas day!

Yep. Christmas isn't a meaningful thing in Japan. Very and unashamedly commercial. Some brilliant advertising by KFC a couple of decades ago has made KFC the Xmas tradition.

So done the Japan trip, thank you again for the tips etc. Enjoyed Japan but it didnt captivate me like France and the US. The bullet trains were excellent but I struggled with conquering the metro. Experienced the local cuisine as much as I could but IMO the reputation of food in Japan is overrated. My concern about the language barrier wasn’t too much of a problem, a lot of Japanese spoke at least a little English and google translate came in handy. In the eateries the staff just want you to point at the item and indicate with fingers how many you want.

As I was warned the hotel rooms/bathrooms were very small. A ryokan we stayed in was just big enough to fit the 3 roll out floor mattresses. Went to the monkey park but was sick for the trip to the deer park at Nara. Mt Fuji was excellent and enjoyed Hakone. We went to an Onsen and that was interesting..

My last trip in 2019 was to Italy. Four days driving in Tuscany and Florence, down to Rome for four days of sight seeing eating great food and drinking copious amounts of wine then down to Naples to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum. A twelve day trip in one of the nicest countries you could ever visit. Not cheap but safe, good locals, great food and wine and reasonable weather. To any who intend to visit Europe then a trip to Italy is a must. Mind you most of Europe including Eastern Europe is fine and safe as long as you don't spend too much time in the larger cities
