Most folks will remember when Ellis got a free on the boundary line in the forward pocket, can’t remember if it was the PF or GF.

He flat out didn’t know what to do with it. Left, right, banana, he was all at sea.

It confirmed to me that he’s had pretty much every offensive instinct coached out of him. Unlike most on the list.

This just underlines how important his defensive role was. He seems an anxious character who likes to keep things simple. Dimma and clearly identified his main strength and had him play his one wood with metronomic regularity.

Our club is the epitome of moneyball, not so much in recruiting but in compartmentalised coaching. Know your part in the machine and the rest will look after itself.

And so it is with KMac. I’m looking forward to seeing him patrolling the fat side cos you can bet that’ll be his main gig.

Unless we have major injuries he won’t play. The over under on games played is 6.5 for me.

Agree, KMac is done unless there are major injuries. Fine to look at one prelim game in 2018 but the fact is he was dropped in 2019 Round 17 (wasn't even really having a bad season) and never got a look in after that. I can't see what has changed, if anything the Tigers look far stronger with options than last year.

t'love & t'del there have been a few names thrown up as possible BEllis's wing replacement, Naish, KMac Turner Shai but there could be a surprise candidate, (not yet in your thoughts), that could be a star in this role in a couple of years.
At a function during the week it was mentioned that Hugo RalphSmith is one of the most gifted runners ever to walk, (or should I say run), in Punt Road's doors.
As has been discussed an ideal RFC wingman seems to be one that can fold back and help out defence as well as attack as Caddy Kmac, and in disagreement with t'love, BEllis does even if he had deficiencies .
Anyway back to Hugo already has the forward craft and has trained there for the majority of pre-season, interesting he played back in the Intra club, could this just be giving him an education in the defensive side of the game for a greater purpose?
Another player with multi position possibilities :) .

A few notes from AFL Draft Central

STRENGTHS:

X-Factor
Vertical leap
Speed
Work rate
Clean hands

"he can also play on a wing where he likes to run and carry and he is very hard to stop once he gets on his bike and he can glide across the ground effortlessly. Ralphsmith was a strong performer at the combine testing well for speed and leap but it was his 2km time that really impressed and showed his ability to push hard which will be required at the next level whether as a dashing wingman or hybrid forward, to go with the speed and work rate he also has clean hands and rarely fumbles even under pressure which is a great trait to have as a forward especially where there is a lot of pressure to be clean and make the most of your opportunities. If he puts everything together Ralphsmith can be a match winner at AFL level".

"Ralphsmith certainly looks good with ball in hand and he gets most of his possession up the ground as a wingman playing an outside role and although his contested numbers are solid for his position it is always something that could improve as he has great hands and speed which could be utilised at stoppages more if he can refine his ability to win the contested ball but he is just so damaging on the outside that its really not a major issue at this stage"

Yes I competed against Ralphsmith's dad in school athletics and he won absolutely everything. Gun athlete. Obviously the genes have transferred to Hugo. Very excited to see what he can achieve however not sure he will see much game time in 2020.

So Ellis was treated differently than any other player by having the offensive instincts "coached" out of him?

Which is the opposite of what your next line states and what is widely recognised as the Hardwick/Richmond way of accentuating the strengths?

Agree with others that KMac will be battling to get back in. Although I thought it was Naish that was coming in?

Personally would not surprise to see the likes of Rioli/Baker/Shai lining up on a wing regularly.

Why doesn’t the club employee one of these personal fitness trainers?
Every player who gets one in the off season always come back as super man

That explains a bit to me, because I was watching him run laps prior to the intra club on Thursday and I thought he looked super fit, as opposed to not looking unfit but kind of a little scruffy if that makes any sense.
Wants his wing back no doubt!

Given they can all access exactly the same services for free at their club, I've always considered it a way to say 'look how serious I am this year' to their coaches.

Nothing to do with it.
That’s like suggesting Dusty took up boxing in the preseason a few years back to say look at me.
KMac has benefited enormously looking for the extra advantage to elevate his chances. Might also tell you what he thinks of the clubs dietician

Very long bow on the coaching. It was a tough shot, in a GF, and it's never been a strength. Got caught in 2 minds, it happens.

Dustin is a perfect example of it. He could do all the boxing he likes at the club but he now goes to Leo Berry's as well.

There's no question that originally came about because he hadn't been the most committed athlete and people close to him challenged him about that.

The sessions at Berry's were his way of showing the people around him that he was committed and ready to be the best player he could be.

Hope you don’t think I’m arguing with you all the time but what you suggested earlier sounded like you are advocating that they are doing extras in the preseason to show the coaches they’re committed.
What I’m suggesting is they are doing it for themselves because they want to be the best they can be. Dusty may have had people around him like Ralph to encourage him but he didn’t do it to show off. And because my mate runs Leo Berry’s I’ve got a good insight into how it all came about and the hard work that was involved. Takes absolute commitment to push through that punishment. Carlton sent some boys over a couple of preseasons ago as punishment for off season misdemeanours. All 3 seasoned players threw up after their first session.
Some players happy to get a game and take their money. Others fighting for a chance and a contract. And then there are those who simply want to be the best.
The ones who do it to impress coaches usually get found out very early in the piece

Leon will be thrilled
Since you called my name. :)

Full credit to the guy for identifying and seeking to work on his deficiencies which had to cost him his place in the side, as I had predicted he would once other young and more skilful players developed. I tipped this would happen years before it did.
But why would I have a problem with him doing all this. It's just smart and being a professional - he has to maximise his opportunities while in his prime and there is a space there to replace Ellis in the side.
I already credited him with improving his contested marking which was poor for a guy of his size. Plus he seems to have worked on his kicking too - fairly accurate shot at goal now - although that loose ball drop still worries me. However, despite these gains, he still lost his place.
This is all due to what I predicted - RFC are drafting better quality young talent these days, and want hard-running, skilful, tough footballers who work hard and smart without the ball according to the game-plan, but essentially are dangerous with the ball in hand and can deliver it sharply or score themselves when the opportunity presents.

Ellis at his best managed this.# But also was a like a deer in the spotlight sometimes - a guy who struggled to sustain his confidence I feel.
The club picked up Picket and Stack, brilliant choices, but have a conga-line of likely types who can slot into wing or HBF roles now or over the next couple of years: Bolton, Markov, Naish, Turner, Baker, Ross, Dow, DES, Martyn, Ralphsmith, Cumberland.

There's a window open for KMac as an experienced former incumbent with the hard-running capacity and hardness, but a whole pack of promising, skilled, young talent pushing hard as well. He'll need to be making progress.

# In the analysis of BEllis, not sure if anyone pointed out that his form in the finals may well have been impacted by his move to GCS. I think he was worried about sustaining a serious injury that may have thrown a spanner in the works. Brandon carries a serious financial responsibility for his family I believe.

I am starting to find your name a bit ironic. ;)

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not saying it is a token thing. It's definitely hard work and about improving fitness and performance.

I'm just saying all these guys have access to the equipment and expertise to train as hard as they like and as often as they like at the club. These extra things are definitely about making a statement, to the coaches, their team mates and also themselves that they are making a bigger commitment and are going to push themselves to new levels.

In Dustin's case it was really the time when he decided he was going to get serious about being an elite footballer and he made a commitment to himself to get in the best condition he could.
It's also a change of scenery and a different voice in your ear, change can be as good as a holiday.

s Richmond’s 12 ‘untouchable’ players

By SEN
25 Feb 2020

AFL Hall of Famer Terry Wallet has identified the players he believes are ‘untouchable’ at Richmond.

The former Tigers coach has assessed the current list of the 2017 and 2019 premiers, suggesting that there are 10 positions up for grabs if they want to continue improving and contending for the premiership.

Wallace believes it is just as important to blood promising youngsters to learn their craft alongside the established senior players in a bid to constantly get better rather than keep turning out the same line-up.

“Teams who have been able to stay up for a long while have been brave enough to change up the premiership team and allow other younger players to come into the line-up at times,” he said on SEN’s Dwayne’s World.

“Are they going to be in a better position in 18 months if they just roll out the same 20 premiership players again this time around?

“I think Damien Hardwick has got 12 untouchable Richmond players who just play.

“They’re the guns, they play every week.

“But I would open up the last 11 spots and say, ‘Well, hang on, the rest is up there for opportunity’. Because how do we know if a (Riley) Collier-Dawkins or a Noah Balta is not going to be a better player in 12 months than the bloke who won the premiership for them last season?”

Plough's a comedian. 12 untouchables who just play- except one of them didn't just play after RD 17 last year despite the club having won the previous 3 games.

I reckon he has been reading PRE about Kamdyn's fitness and taken a punt he will be back in the side.
