How is he healthwise?

He's fine. He had a bit of fever on the plane home, but nothing since then. I just thought he would have been a prime candidate for a fast test result, but maybe the fact that he wasn't sick at all when he went for the test meant that they were not too concerned about him. I'm not worried about him, but I'm pretty worried that we are not testing effectively in general.

Yes that is 100% the better outcome because the outcome we have is to give the megalomaniacs in Canberra more power to interfere in our lives.

It is better because it keeps people productive, which is what we need if we are going to be able to provide health services for as many people as possible now and into the future. Where are the resources going to come from to cover the huge loss in productivity we will suffer as a result of healthy people being forced out of their livelihood? Coronavirus is not going to be the end of the world, what will be is the breakdown of the division of labour.

I can't see how you have deduced this Gia? The advice of those who know is that the more people "out being productive" the greater chance that you spread the infection faster and to more people, which necessarily increases the load on the health system as more people get sick. That is exactly the opposite of what you are suggesting.

The encouragement for Australia is that the daily increase has been falling.

March 21 +27%
March 22 +26%
March 23 +24%
March 24 +22%
March 25 +19%

Something like the consequences of Ruby Princess could reverse that trend in the next few days, but there are far worse sets of figures around the world right now.
I wonder how much better our numbers would be without the Cruise Ship fiasco

Dunno. Suspect it panicked government into escalating the restrictions ahead of schedule since those passengers subsequently travelled to every state except Victoria. I'm only guessing from a very simple set of numbers but it appears the slowing is a result of people observing the official advice, and that we may have pulled the shutdown trigger a fraction early.

My pie-in-the-sky hope is that we can whittle it down to zero new infections in a couple of months and cautiously resume our lives in the knowledge that borders are closed and no new cases are coming in. Then it'd be up to the rest of the world to clean up their own backyards before resuming international travel. I'm not even sure if that's plausible in the epidemiology world. Just gotta keep doing the right thing and cross our fingers. The more disciplined we are now, the less time we will need to spend living like this.

They don’t care about long term economic consequences they are doctors. They are also thinking much too short term IMO, they aren’t considering the consequences of putting thousands out of work.

I keep hearing about how great the testing is in Australia. My son returned from Bali 10 days ago and had some symptoms. I sent him off to get tested last Thursday and he still hasn't got the results. I live in the country and have him quarantined in my sister's weekender up the road so it's safe, but I'm pretty surprised about how long it's taken to hear back. I'm a bit worried that our poor testing regime is keeping the numbers artificially low to be honest.
No country was geared up for this level of testing. Our testing per head of population is actually now the highest in the world, just ahead of South Korea. I am not saying it’s enough but the logistics of gearing up are huge.
Massive numbers of test kits and analysers are on their way and will be commissioned in coming weeks. Testing regimes were actually altered yesterday to include more groups of people.
It has to be understood that the world was not prepared for this and that lead times for equipment and the like are long.

There's no doubt alot more people have it then have been tested. But that's because there are rules on who can take the test. I don't think it's being kept artificially low else we would have seen far more serious cases and deaths.

A week to get results back seems a bit long to me though but as long as your son is isolating and doesn't have severe effects and is breathing fine he'll be ok.

No it doesn't make people more productive. As everyone will get it, the economy will grind to a halt, the health system will fail and many, many will die. It would decimate our country for years. There's not one country in the world advocating what you're saying. The solution requires a balance of measures to ensure the health system is not overrun. That is the key to measures being taken worldwide. You call it oppression, I call it doing the right thing for the people. We'll get through this fine as long as we isolate. Every thing will turn back to normal in time.

Thats the beauty of clippers.......... when they are too noisy, you can shut them up with a little bit of sewing machine oil:cool::help

You don’t have to have full lockdown though, just isolate those that are crook and test to identify people with the virus so they can self isolate. Isolate the people most vulnerable. What we have done is gone waaay too far, the costs will be massive both in lives and impoverishment.

For how long? And likely more than $5B -by removing the cap of $150K per business - how much more? Completely unknown.

And you just have to forecast a 30% drop in revenue to be eligible? What if you don't drop 30% but already got the cash do you have to pay it back?

And doesn't the wage subsidy get paid to the business in a lump sum and not directly to the employee? If that is the case that is open to abuse right there.

So whats your solution, just deal with everyone when they don't have jobs. Great solution. Better to try and sustain people in employment. As I've shown previously, if Australia paid $500 / employee per week for the next 6 months (and I did this very high level and didn't factor in positions that will be paid in full like all workers paid by government plus many others) then it would cost $169bn over 6 months LESS than the package the government have put together and far more targeted at what is needed. At the end of the day we are going to be paying that anyway, as I've said the 1m people becoming unemployed from Monday will be costing the country $550m / week, my position is why not give that to businesses in order to sustain employment. This is as much about retaining confidence as anything else.

There would obviously need to be verification checks, it can't just be a system that believes what they are told. In NZ you have to sign a declaration to state that you will lose 30%. Now this is in its infancy but I would expect the government to get us to prove the decline after the fact. You also have to prove names to the government so it will be easy to find out who has not retained the employment of those employees.

Its not a total trust exercise you know.

How are people finding their communities doing the right thing?
Definitely much quieter here in Bayside today. Streets were basically deserted.
I had to head to Southland quickly to pick up a computer monitor for my son's home schooling & it was basically empty bar for a few people around.
Maybe just maybe we're starting to really get it.

On Tuesday I had the day off work to take my misses to elective surgery (she got in just in time). while i was waiting for her i did some grocery shopping at Westfield airport west, and honestly, i was shocked by what i saw. why are places like Tattslotto shops, strandbags, jays jays, rebel sport still open? i was quite angry about it.

i was also surprised by the amount of cars on the road. unless you're an essential worker, stay the F**K home!!! and even if you need to grab groceries, don't stuff around. the high percentage of 20-29 year old constracting this shows the lack of care and selfishness.

after seeing that, I am being a lot stricter myself. yes I am still working, but no one should be staying away from home longer than they need to.

Prof Doherty of the Doherty institute is saying we will see the effect of the latest actions in about a week. Let’s hope he is right

encouraging, but we can't rest on our laurels.

Because Scomo reckons it far more risky to sit at a table by yourself or your family in a food court than it is to go around touching all the clothes in Jay Jays or Rebel etc. Also, thinks there is no issue with having a haircut but a massage is too far. Mixed messages galore coming out of the prime minister.

Prof Doherty of the Doherty institute is saying we will see the effect of the latest actions in about a week. Let’s hope he is right

The lag between reported data and real cases was 10 days in China.

However, we have less test kits, less PPE, and slower reporting of test results due to lab issues, so I think we’re a little slower than 10 says and slightly worse off than our numbers currently suggest.

There are so many varying views out there here is another one from yet another professor

"We're wasting our efforts sitting at home and not working if only half the population is compliant," Professor Prokopenko said.

PS. This is the only professor I trust:
