I think what differentiates this Tiger side from those of previous eras is that we typically win through a TEAM based system. Other great sides of the past relied more on individual talent. I already rate them as the greatest team I’ve seen in my 50 odd years of following the yellow & black but If we win this week I’ve got no issues with this side claiming the mantle as Richmond greatest ever team.

The the 2peat team of the early 20s and the team from the early 30s were bloody good too!
Yes, 7 GF's in 8 years 1927-34 (4th in 1930) was a great run, even if we only won twice, and only one player (Tom O'Halloran) appeared in all seven. That team won 24 in a row at Punt Road and had champions on every line.

1940-44, four GF's and a 4th place, also worthy of mention.

We tend to do things in eras, good and bad.

Demon's 55 56 57 58 would have to be in the conversation if you're talking about the whole comp.

My best is the Brisbane team because of the way they played.

I'll never forget the anguish of watching them tear us apart up at the Gabba one night but strangely finding myself in complete awe.

They were so perfect from one end of the ground to the other.

The thought of winning 3 more in short succession is delicious. Can you imagine the hatred.

The 1980 side was pretty good, if it wasn't for internal squabbling, and discontent, that team could have acheived anything.

You could probably include 59 & 60
Quite an achievement. If not for Collingwood it would have been 6 flags in a row

There were also 12 teams in the comp now we have 18.
33% harder to win a premiership
And not playing everyone twice.

I think if this side win on Saturday they are the best Richmond side of all time, if they can win another then they move into the mix for best teams of all time. Another after that and it's the top of the pile we go.
Assuming we win this week I think the group that played 67,69,73. 74,got robbed 72 even kicking the highest ever losing grand final score will still be better.Having said that it gives them something to aim for next year!

Thing is that group is not a group. There were 2 groups.

The boys now would win 3 flags as 1 group.

A good number of 4 time premiership players in that 60s/70s group. If the current team has that success over nine years fours flags, one runners up,one losing prelim 75

that would also probably count as two groups given the turnover of players.

Yep, we do tend to get premierships in eras, I always noticed this. The 1943 and 1980 premierships were sort-of half exceptions as there were premierships not long before and we could have won more at the time.

Sorry, have to correct you there as Melbourne won 3 in a row - the record of Melbourne in that period was stunning, winning flags in 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960 and 1964. 6 in 10 years. Wow. Melbourne also won 3 in a row earlier, they really seem to do it in groups. Of course, they promptly got rid of their coach in 1965 I think (Norm Smith) which was truly idiotic. From what I know from a Melbourne supporter this was what led to the Melbourne Football Club no longer being controlled by the MCC.

Let's hope our current era is the best yet.

Sorry I’m a maths nerd. 1/12 to 1/18 is 50% harder. I.e. on average you win once every 18 years instead of once every 12 years (assuming it worked that way).

Correct.
Put in this way, in a 12-team competition, you could expect to win three premierships in 36 years, but in an 18-team comp, only two.
So I would say that three flags in an 18-team comp is worth four-and-a-half in a 12-team comp.
And the current crop is doing it in fewer years.

Greatest team ever is always arguable - maybe is about as good as you can go. What isn't arguable is that this team is absolutely in lock-step with the administration. So much so that it is almost impossible to talk about the on-field success without talking about the off-field success, stability and support. As a club it has never been this good both on and off the field. Gone a long way from the possum poo in the ceiling and the chicken poo outside the front door.
