Let's assume that all clubs picked best available. All clubs at every single pick. Then we don't get sidetracked into tales of the paranormal.

And let's suppose that Cal Twomey is guessing based on feedback (doctored, for sure) from young prospects and managers. And that nobody on the internets who purports to be a good judge is on a club payroll.

Thilthorpe. Went at 2. Where did you think he'd go?

Interesting player. As a 17yo he played six senior SANFL games in late 2019. Then after the seniors bowed out he went back to U18 finals and dominated a PF. As a bottom ager.

As an 18yo he played 9 senior SANFL games in 2020. Then copped an injury. So he has a formguide. That's a big advantage in 2020. 68% of the pool does not. And the formguide says good things about Thilthorpe. (By the way the kid looks 15yo.)

SANFL numbers (Formguide) NB his senior side gets flogged so they have to use their starving U18 forward in the guts.

I've only seen highlights of him, and the Futures game from last year. And read the numbers. So I couldn't predict where he'd go. But I can understand why he's chosen. Youngsters with Thilthorpe's profile and numbers who are forward rucks go very early.

Is he an Ottens? Maybe not as classy but busier? Not as good overhead but hits up? An inside ruck as a junior. Rare beasts.

You can see in the highlights the bloke is blue-collar. He rucks and distributes. Ballwinner. BWA from a tall. Gold. Has ground game. Great values. Watch him make good decisions. Do notice the smart hands. His numbers show you he stays engaged. Getting talls engaged is the hardest part.

The formguide reads really well for this bloke. In a year largely without any form.

BTW if Footscray had pick #1 in this draft I guess they'd have taken him. Just ahead of Phillips. Those with skin in the game have said so.

You only have to scratch the surface to see that Riley Thilthorpe has some serious credentials. Think Ottens. Kreuzer. Inside rucks. Thilthorpe kicks goals. Paul Salmon? A less aerial Tomahawk? By any measure not a prospect to be dismissed.

One more thing on Thilthorpe. I think his nickname should be Thilth Thilth. Or Thilth McThilth. Or Thilth Isthmus-Thilth, pronounced with a Catalonian lithp.

"The broadcast was also misleading on this. Clubs insist they entered their picks or bids for players much sooner than the broadcast clock indicated. They know this because when a club entered a bid or a pick, the clock for the clubs stopped, but the clock on the broadcast did not. They know when bids or picks were entered and they say this was not the same time the TV audience was told."

We could have had
17-Carroll
36-Ford
51-Rioli

Why ?? would we not try to find the gem in the rough
Apparantly the Tigers are said to have 3 or 4 non negotiables in players if a player doesn't have one or a weakness in one that they feel cannot be remedied they are overlooked, or delisted or let go.

Whether this assessment is true or not I do not know.

I also have no idea about the quality of these kids.

Tough year alright.

I made a commiseratory call late last night to the dad of a young fella who reached out for some advice during the shut down and I've been giving a hand to since. Was considered a reasonable chance and didn't get picked up and the devastation was palpable through the phone. Whole family in tears.

Fortunately his name was called out today. It's easy to forget how brutal the process of a draft can be on people.
Good to hear that all ended well for the Lad Large Son Of Bull.

Good luck to him.

Suppose the answer lies in the fact that other clubs didn’t take them around those positions either.
Must be some serious flaws however don’t understand how so called professional draft commentators got it so wrong. Especially with Carrol available at pick 40.
Surely they would have heard something?

Im really perplexed at best and shitty at worst with our draft. We have a pressing need to replenish our mid stocks and I am not sold on what is in the cupboard.

We basically set ourselves back a year of development,

RCD, Martyn, Dow, Ross, Stack not enough?
They certainly don't measure up to Cotchin, Martin, Edwards no. Maybe that's our plan next year to steal another one or two stars, but effectively we lost a year of development. That doesn't even include replacements for Jack, Houli and the ageing Astbury / Grimes (lesser extent) combo.

I know the proverbial "be happy with winning flags..." sentiment will pop up, but list management is not a static thing. For the past two years we have lost a decent core of our stars for long periods but they were lucky enough to be right in time for finals.

Edit: happy as larry to have egg on my face come finals next year.

Hi Jason, your posting is normally pretty good, this post is *smile* though :)

Ross, RCD, Dow, Martyn, Stack, Cumberland, Ralphsmith are some that will look to push the incumbents hard

Add to that 2*2021 1st Rounders, 2*2021 2nd Rounders, 2*2021 3rd Rounders

I think we are sensationally placed

It is a matter of opinion but I tend to agree we have players coming up and I would add, they are not getting chances to play senior games.

I think next year's draft is when we load up on new players and try and give the current young players a chance in 2021. By extension, swapping for more picks next year seems a good idea to me.

No guarantees on any of them, in fact there is a possibility that none of them will make it long term. We are going to find out how good Cotch, Martin, Edwards et al really are when they are gone.

Happy of course though to back the club in who clearly believe there is much more quality next year.

CJ to play forward
It’s not good news for Chol
There is far more exposed form at AFL level for Chol than CCJ: - 21 games v 1. Sure, Chol has not impressed consistently enough to guarantee a future at RFC but for now, CCJ is really unproven at the level. All hope and no proof.

Reckon we’ll take another rookie before the season starts. I just heard we have invited some players to do preseason with a view to giving one a rookie spot. One player invited is my cousins son Rhyan Mansell, a Tassie lad from Nth Launceston who played in Woodville-West Torrens senior flag last season. He’s a small defender, quick and tough

People do realise that Martin & Cotchin are once in a generation type players.

You are not going to find them still around at pick 20 of the draft.
