Thought it was weird the cops were trying to shoot the shark.
Depends, not sure what the circumstances were. The shark reputedly hung around for some time. If they were first on the scene in an inflatable then there might not have been an alternative other than to try to herd the shark out to sea.

Man lucky to be alive after he was attacked by a shark near KI

Dixie Sulda
Adelaide Advertiser
December 7, 2020

A 29-year-old surfer is lucky to be alive after he was attacked by a shark in waters off Kangaroo Island on Sunday afternoon.

The man managed to paddle back to shore after he was bitten by a great white about 2.20pm at D’Estrees Bay before flagging down an off-duty paramedic from Mt Gambier who drove him towards Kingscote.

On-duty paramedics met the men on their way and transported the injured surfer to Kingscote Hospital, before he was flown to Flinders Medical Centre.

He had multiple lacerations to his torso but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Police, with fisheries and the local council erected signs to close D’Estrees Bay beach, and asked members of the public to avoid the area.

Senior radio operator and coastguard for Kangaroo Island Carol Miell said D’Estrees Bay was home to schools of sharks, and attractive to surfers but avoided by locals.

“You’re in big boy waters, you’re not in a gulf and there’s plenty of sharks,” she said.

“I wouldn’t put my toe in the water.

“He’s very lucky … I think he got out pretty lightly.”

Kangaroo Island Mayor Michael Pengilly said he was relieved to hear the local surfer survived his experience in an area locals called “the sewer”.

“He’s OK, that’s the good news,” Mr Pengilly said.

“The south coast is very rough waters, itis reefy, there’s a lot of seals and fish, obviously a lot of sharks out there, he was unlucky enough to have an encounter today.

“I’m just grateful that he survived.”

Surf Life Saving South Australia president John Baker said now was the time to look out for sharks.

“Our general advice for safety is not to swim around dawn or dusk as that’s when sharks tend to be more active,” Mr Baker said.

So far this year there has been 33 shark sightings reported to PIRSA, including six in November. A bronze whaler was spotted on November 8 just 200m north of Grange Jetty

It follows a string of recent shark attacks in Queensland.

Surfing rocked as shark attack victim at Maui dies

The surfing world has been shocked to learn the victim of a shark attack in Maui has died.

The attack happened before competition kicked off on Wednesday (Tuesday, Hawaii time) and as a result, Aussie stars Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons had their semi-final at the Roxy Pro postponed as action was cancelled for the day.

The World Surf League (WSL) confirmed on Thursday the tragic news the victim of the shark attack had died.

“The WSL has learned that Tuesday’s victim of the shark attack at Honolua Bay has tragically passed away,” surfing’s governing body said.

“Our thoughts and hearts are with the victim’s family and friends as well as the entire Maui surfing community.”

According to local media, the victim is a man in his 50s who was attacked in Honolua Bay after paddling out for a morning surf. A large chunk of his board was reportedly ripped off in the attack.

The Maui Pro has been put on hold and will no longer take place at Honolua Bay, the WSL revealing it is looking at alternate locations to complete the event after consulting with surfers and local authorities.

Before the shark attack tragedy, Wright had earned her way into the semi-final of the Roxy Pro after scoring a perfect 10 in the first quarter-final heat against fellow Aussies and seven-time world champ Steph Gilmore.

Caribbean island of St Martin reports rare fatal shark attack

A fatal shark attack has been reported in the French Caribbean territory of St Martin, shocking many in the eastern Caribbean region where experts say such attacks are extremely rare.

Government spokesman Alain Rioual confirmed the attack to The Associated Press but declined further comment ahead of a press conference.

He said it's the first time in the territory's recent history that a fatal attack has been reported.

The attack occurred in Orient Bay, a popular beach located in the north-east part of the island that St Martin shares with the Dutch Caribbean territory of St Maarten.

No details on the person's identity or nationality were immediately released, although local media reported the victim was an unidentified woman in her 40s.

There's only been one unprovoked and non-fatal bite reported in St Martin, and it occurred in 2005, Tyler Bowling, manager of Florida Program for Shark Research, told the AP.

Overall, there have been 34 unprovoked bites in the Caribbean region since 2000, four of which have been fatal, he said.

The most common shark species in the region where today's attack occurred are Caribbean reef sharks and nurse sharks, which don't pose a risk, Mike Heithaus, shark researcher and dean of the College of Arts, Sciences & Education at Florida International University, said in a phone interview.

He said tiger sharks and bull sharks occasionally appear as well.

“Most times they're not a threat, but they can be dangerous,” he said.

The majority of shark attacks in the Caribbean have occurred in the Bahamas, with two reported last year, one of them fatal.

A shark attack also was reported in Cuba in 2019, according to the Florida-based International Shark Attack File.

Program Director Gavin Naylor told the AP that he was surprised about the attack.

“It's pretty unusual in that part of the world,” he said.

While no details have been released, Mr Naylor said such attacks are usually tied to mitigating circumstances including spearfishing or chumming, adding that 95 per cent of shark attacks are accidental.

He said most attacks in the Caribbean occur in the Bahamas because of its massive tourism.

“We see a very strong correlation between shark bites and the number of people in the water,” he said.

The organisation reported a total of 64 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks worldwide last year.

"unprovoked shark attacks"
Pure comedy gold.
Go swimming in the ocean, wearing a black wetsuit and looking like a seal and it's an unprovoked attack?
Should they only bite people who punch them on the nose first?

As an aside, there was an alternate take of the scene in Jaws where the boy "Alex Kintner" is killed while floating on a small raft (still shot below). Due to constant malfunctions of the mechanical shark, Spielberg opted for a "less is more" approach, with the shark only being shown clearly in the latter part of the film.

Ok, way too obtuse for me. I still see no connection to Trump here, but hey, each to their own.

Just checked the latest stats... well at least 2019.

Global deaths - humans killed by sharks - 64
Global deaths - sharks killed by humans -100,000,000

If it's 3/4 time the sharks need to get a move on

This is the argument I will never understand, equating a human life with a shark's. But maybe we can hit the Chinese over the head with finning.

We should, that's a crime and needlessly cruel as well - they cut the fins off and dump the still living shark into the water to bleed to death. And its not just the chinese, its whoever can sell fins to the chinese of course.

Exploiting sharks has little to do with shark attacks and much more to do with humans being an entitled species who see the world as something to make money out of and nothing else. It's a false equivalence, but I'm amused by the outrage that another species kills a few humans ever year given what we do to other species and, in fact, the planet.

As an occasional surfer I hope I don't get eaten by a shark but I'm ok to take that risk when I enter the water.
