The F1 was rescheduled.
The tennis should have been too.
Not because of the NSW outbreak as that has happened too recently, but the vaccine rollout.

Considering the history of Australia's involvement in tennis we should have had the clout.
And it would suit the tennis program to be closer to the other grand slams

It would be ideal in march or april.

But think of all the dollars the international tourists will bring into the economy.......... oh, wait. Right.
Talk of losing the open because it isn’t going ahead this year is also crap. Wasn’t Wimbledon scrapped last year due the the exact same reason, and not talk about them losing the rights to hold it again.
Stupid decision made by stupid people

Getting really bad in this part of the world :(.. many believe the virus brought by white ppl :( and the vaccine cant be trusted because its made by whites :( ) and whites are trying to kill Africans with carona and the vaccine... is being pushed by social media and by opposition parties here .. Also lots of negativity re governments imposing lockdowns , curfews .. opposition parties are very critical .. yep playing politics around this issue rather than helping ( think if they were in power they would do the same thing ).. A alcohol ban in all southern African countries ( Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.)is very very very very very very unpopular . 1000 ppl plu sare dying a day in South Africa .. 500 new cases a day here ..and countries are going broke .. we rely on diamonds and tourism in Botswana and both are stuffed atm .. Not enough money for most governments here to do large scale vaccinations .. and then a lot of ppl wont take the vaccination believing again though info on facebook its Americans , Europeans ( white ppl ) etc trying to kill them with the vaccine.

There’s no alcohol ban in most of the countries you mention.

Australia has asked Pfizer for “additional information” about its vaccine after reports from Norway suggesting the jab was too risky for the very old or terminally ill.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said the government had “immediately sought” more information from Pfizer and the Norway medical regulator regarding the report about “possible consequences of the Pfizer vaccine”.

The Norway report does not suggest younger people under the age of 75 should not take the vaccine.

“We have been in contact with the Foreign Minister, and Marise Payne will task DFAT to seek advice directly from the Norwegian governmentIn addition,” Mr Hunt said.

“As further information is available, we’ll share that with the Australian public.”

Mr Hunt said at the same time there had been “heartening” news from the Centers for Disease Control in the United States, with “very positive results” from its review of 1.8 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine “in terms of both the safety and the efficacy”.

“But this is exactly why, as a nation, we have been absolutely clear ... that safety is Australia’s number one priority,” he said.

“So, we’ll continue to follow the processes of the medical regulator, because that’s going to keep Australians safe and ultimately provide confidence.”

Federal government seeks information from Norway after deaths in the elderly after Pfizer vaccine (paywalled)

Natasha Robinson
The Australian
January 17, 2020

The Federal government is urgently seeking more information from Norway after health authorities in the Scandinavian nation reported multiple deaths in patients over 80 who received the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

Australia’s medical regulator the Therapeutic Goods Administration says it has received reports of about 30 deaths among 40,000 elderly individuals vaccinated in Norway with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in recent weeks.

“The deaths were recorded among very frail patients, including some who were anticipated to only have weeks or months to live,” the TGA said in a statement.

Norway has adjusted its advice on the Pfizer vaccine following the deaths of the patients. But it says there is very little risk associated with the vaccine other than for those who are extremely frail.

The deaths were associated with fever, nausea and diarrhoea, which are relatively common short-lived effects that a number of people experience after vaccination. The TGA said it is not expected that these common adverse reactions following immunisation will be of significance in the vast majority of individuals vaccinated with the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine.

The Norwegian regulator says there are typically around 4,000 deaths in aged care every week. “It may be a coincidence, but we aren’t sure,” Steinar Madsen, medical director of the Norwegian Medicines Agency (NOMA), told The British Medical Journal. “There is no certain connection between these deaths and the vaccine.”

More than 20 000 doses of the vaccine have been administered over the past few weeks in Norway. NOMA has investigated 13 of the deaths in the elderly so far and concluded that common adverse reactions of mRNA vaccines, such as fever, nausea, and diarrhoea, may have contributed to fatal outcomes in some of the frail patients, the BMJ reported.

Federal health Minister Greg Hunt has asked the Therapeutic Goods Administration to seek more information on the deaths from the Norwegian medical regulator. Foreign Minister Marise Payne will also task the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade with seeking advice directly from the Norwegian government.

The Pfizer vaccine was the first COVID-19 vaccine to be approved by medical regulators in a host of countries. The TGA is currently assessing its safety and efficacy data and has previously stated it expects to approve the vaccine in late January.

Australia has a pre-purchase agreement with Pfizer for 10 million doses of the vaccine, which was due to be given to five million Australians from late February. Health workers, the elderly and the vulnerable were to be first in line to receive the jab.

Mr Hunt said safety was the number one priority of the government and the medical regulator.

“I have been in contact with the TGA this morning and requested that they seek additional information both from the company but also from the Norwegian medical regulator,” Mr Hunt said. “As further information is available we’ll share that with the Australian public.”

“But this is exactly why as a nation we have been absolutely clear from the Prime Minister and myself and the chief medical regulator, the head of the Therapeutic Goods Administration John Skerrit …..we have been absolutely clear and we remain absolutely clear that safety is Australia’s number one priority.

“And so we’ll continue to follow the processes of the medical regulator because that’s going to keep Australians safe and ultimately provide confidence.”

Pfizer released a statement saying it would co-operate with medical regulators in investigating the causes of the deaths.

“Pfizer and BioNTech are aware of reported deaths following administration of BNT162b2,” the statement said. “We are working with NOMA to gather all the relevant information.

“Norwegian authorities have prioritised the immunisation of residents in nursing homes, most of whom are very elderly with underlying medical conditions and some of whom are terminally ill. NOMA confirm the number of incidents so far is not alarming, and in line with expectations. All reported deaths will be thoroughly evaluated by NOMA to determine if these incidents are related to the vaccine. The Norwegian government will also consider adjusting their vaccination instructions to take the patients’ health into more consideration.

“Our immediate thoughts are with the bereaved families.”

Mr Hunt said at the same time as the Norwegian reports, the Centre for Disease Control in the United States had issued a “heartening” report about the Pfizer vaccine.

“Also at the same time what we have seen is a heartening report from the CDC which has reviewed approximately 1.8 million doses of the same vaccine with very positive results in terms of both safety and the efficacy,” Mr Hunt said.

The government has been under pressure to roll out the Pfizer vaccine quickly after several overseas countries granted approval for its emergency use. But it stood firm in insisting that the TGA go through a thorough review process of the vaccine. The government has emphasised that in holding off until the vaccine can be fully assessed, Australia has the benefit of examining post-release data on the vaccine from other nations who have approved it.

Yeah I'm not sure why we've bowed to pressure from wherever and brought the vaccine programme forward. IMO the vaccine should be fine, but with where cases are at in this country, I don't see a reason why we should be using the vaccine before the 2nd quarter of the year. Let the hardest hit countries find out the issues before we take it, and allow us to make the right long term decisions about who gets which vaccine.

That's one of the beneficial outcomes from Victoria's hard approach
I,d suggest the pressure is to get the country vaccinated in readiness to open international borders.
Still its no reason to rush

Yeah, vaccination early protects us from outbreaks and allows us to open again earlier potentially.

So some of the tennis players that have come in on the covid positive flights are complaining about not being allowed out of their hotel rooms. They realise that this was one of the guidelines they would need to abide by to come here. If they don't like it, I'd put them straight back on a charter flight out of Australia.

If players or their entourage breach quarantine they should be immediately disqualified from playing in the tournament & send them home.

Some of them seem to have no awareness about the coronavirus situation in different countries.

The thing is, this is their living. No Opens and no big pay cheque. They missed a fair amount of tournaments last year, you'd assume they'd want the money so they would do what they need to.

If its people like Novak, we should just send them home as he has been clear through all this, he doesn't give a stuff about anyone else, its all about Novak. Let someone else (more deserving) have a change at taking out the big money.

If this is true and someone changed the rules without telling the players, whoever it was should be fired from Tennis Australia.

The Australian government have been pretty clear where any relaxation on the rules for the tennis group vs everyone else existed. If someone within Tennis Australia communicated something different, then they should be fired. I can see the players frustrations if they were given 1 set of rules before taking off, then something different when they landed but support what they are doing.

Maybe Tennis Australia needs to think again about delaying the tournament so that players have enough time after quarantine to be at the right level of fitness to play.

Where was their contingency for if this exact situation was to occur? It was highly likely to occur so where is their contingency? Tennis Australia don't seem to have any.

Never should have allowed it to go ahead.
It should have gone ahead but with no compromises. If they are willing to do the quarantine correctly they play. Would be great to see some local pro go deep.

I suspect all the correct information was given to the players and was either ignored, or never made it up the chain to them. This seems to be their standard defence whenever they get news they don’t like. Maria Sharapova’s defence when she got busted taking a banned substance springs to mind.

To be fair it's probably a noisy minority misrepresenting the rest, although nobody in quarantine would be happy about how things have panned out. Yeah, the Djoker and his troupe would be favourites if there was a market on first breach.

Just staggering decision making from the Victorian government. We’ve had a 3 month lockdown and brought cases down from 700 plus a day to nothing and all but eliminated the virus. Then we had a lapse due to infections in NSW but locked down the state to again bring it under control. Tough decisions made for the greater good but thousands of Victorians stranded interstate and can’t return to their homes. Very hard on them but ultimately for the greater good.

So we have Victorians stranded and unable to return to their own homes. Yet the government decides it’s perfectly fine to allow thousands of people from the worst infected areas in the world to just land on our doorstep. People from Europe and the USA where tens of thousands of people are becoming infected every day. Where thousands of people are dying every day. Yet we let them in but people who actually live here aren’t allowed to cross a river to come home.

It’s close to the most absurd decision I’ve ever witnessed. After all the hard work and tough decisions to get things under control they’ve basically rolling out the red carpet for the 3rd wave. I can not see how this doesn’t escape from hotel quarantine. No way the entitled prima donnas that are international elite athletes will abide by the quarantine protocols. At least some of them will find a way around it and infect a local hotel worker. Then the genie is out of the bottle and we’re all in lockdown again. Geez I hope I’m wrong but this is a recipe for disaster.

Absolutely *smile* unbelievable.

yes on the face of it,

it does seem entirely absurd on several levels.

If it follows the early trajectory of debacleness,

it could make the Ruby Princess look like worlds best practice epidemiology.
