Yeah - old man Fagan probably thinks he's got us figured out
What an absolute dud of a coach.
Both Hinkley and Fagan will realise the absolute advantage they had last year.
Cant see them challenging.
Both ordinary

I think the contested ball blitz was planned from further out than the St Kilda final and I’m pretty sure that Hardwick even said that Kingsley came to the other coaches with the idea weeks before. Helped that we got Prestia and Edwards back into the side on the eve of the finals.

Just on the Brisbane game, it’s worth remembering we were without Lynch, Prestia was playing his first game in 3 months, Edwards his second or third and we were coming off a bye which recent history shows we struggle with. On top of that Martin plays his worst final since 2018 prelim. All that and Brisbane could only beat us by 15pts! Talk about rope-a-dope.

TBH, I'm not fully sold on both Port and Brisbane. They both enjoyed dreamlike Covid draws relative to all Melbourne sides and still failed to even reach the finish line. I want to see how they fare with chunks of games in Melbourne.

Welcome to chilly Mexico amigos!!! :blowingup

My take is, and I could be way off course... we were exposed against Brisbane in the first final and we simply had no choice to adjust or risk being found out down the finals road by Port who are a strong contested ball side.

Without watching the St Kilda final the week after I would say we implemented it in that game and tweeked it again for Port the following week.

We knew if we can at least match their strong contest in the centre square we could outgun them everywhere else on the ground with our connection.

A master stroke which is tailor made for our midfielders waiting in the wings too.
Could very well be part of the future planning, i recall it started before the Finals, in the last game v the Crows we smashed them in that area & in the weeks leading up to it when they started winning they'd been dominant in that area.

I am not sold on Port, we have beaten them with a very undermanned side in '19 over there, mind you we always play them over there with 8 of our last 10 against them in SA, if they ever have to play us at the 'G again they'll need a map! even H&A last yr we were up at 3/4 time with an undermanned side & they had a massive leg up re: Home games if you believe what thier whingeing fans tell us. FWIW with 6 more scoring shots, we should have won the PF by more than we did.

Fagan has still to work out high disp #'s don't win you games...

Not sure I'd agree re Port. Don't forget they were in the original hub so they were in Queensland for most of the early part of the season.

They only played 7 games in Adelaide for the home and away season and one was against the Crows. We played 5 in Victoria, 4 at the MCG. Any advantage from the home games was also offset by having to travel in and out on the same day for away games which is a really tough trip.

Some advantages, some disadvantages, but miles away from the benefits Brisbane had.
let's not forget teams playing them in SA also had same day travel, we even almost rolled them with an underminned side off a 4 day break with same day travel!

We play the way we want to play, when we need to change we can because our players and coaches are the top percentile of their craft.
You want to beat us, don't let us play the way we want for 4 quarters.
Not too many clubs have even close to our depth of skill across the Richmond FC.

I find Port more convincing than Brisbane. Not quite sure what Brisbane need to get to the next level but they do have a few deficiencies.

Port are very good, yes, we could have beat them by more in the PF: 6 more scoring shots and a 6 point win does indicate that. But they were damned close in that game. Port are a threat although it would be interesting to see how they would go against us at the MCG.

The clearance stats are an interesting one. AFL Tables lists clearances but doesn't distinguish centre clearances - the clearances in the QF were 38 (BL) to 37 (Rich) so I would say our focus on winning clearances started before the finals and it was not the reason we lost to Brisbane.

Agree. We had our best team available and were on our A-game against Port and they kept up. No one else has been able to do that since the finals of 2017. They are legit.

No reason why Brisbane and Port shouldn't both be contending again. I was slow to accept Brisbane as legit, but they've had a couple of tastes now, beat us on our merits and are young enough to keep improving.

Port's list is very solid on paper but they are in the risk zone regarding age. Westhoff fell off the perch last year, Gray and Boak are 32-33 and there are half a dozen other players on the wrong side of 30. They also played 9 of 19 at Adelaide Oval and had a good run with injury.

As said, I think both will be thereabouts but there is a little more risk that 2020 was a last hurrah for Port.

I think the rain helped them as they were way too short in defence. Picking up Alir is a great get for them and i still can't figure out why Sydney let him go.

Longmire didn't seem to be a fan. Watched a Swans game where he caught the eye several times but was dropped for the next match. He tends to chance his arm charging at the loose ball/ball in dispute - his opponent is loose if he doesn't win it/spike it. Playing him in the ruck at 194cm suggested they'd given up on him.

Teams wanting to beat us need to play 4 1/4's themselves, add on to that stopping us doing the same.

Longmire is a boring coach, much like his mentor and his mentors predecessor. Alir is too exciting for their brand.

History shows one top 4 team from the previous year will bomb out of the top 4 and usually misses the 8 altogether - I agree that Brisbane‘s form looks legit so that leaves either Geelong or Port - I am hoping the cats bomb for obvious reasons but it may well be Port.

Of the top 4 teams from last yr Port are the one that need to prove they can back up last yr.

Brisbane are nearing maturity and have a swagger. It could be their year to miss a beat while still developing.
I don't know the truth but feel like Port are older than us but have some quality young players just missing the middle ground, well coached and straddled the mental fence last year. Missed the best chance they will ever have so might be up for another year.
Geelong, recruited to stay there abouts, will still beat most bottom teams and have an almighty home ground advantage.
Think last years teams are well placed to challenge for second to 8th at best.

Why not both?
