One of the rule changes being introduced this season should benefit our team.

Most of our team is made up of endurance athletes who are fast and one of the rule changes (and a return to 20min quarters) will benefit that type player.

Reduced interchanges (down to 75) will make it harder for teams to keep their explosive players fresh, teams with a lower endurance base will struggle to run out games and could get overrun late in quarters.

The return to 20 min quarters will magnify the the effect of the rule change so I am expecting that some teams which rose up the ladder last season will dip this season.

They'll just nail us with the new standing still on the mark rule. Think we copped some 50 metre penalties last year, just wait.

EZJ has been training the new standing the mark rule at a pretty technical level.

his take: ' The bloke with the free can just stroll around you and theres not much you can do about it on the mark'

should suit Tigers I would reckon. Whats your thought on the new rule? I asked

'great if you have the ball, *smile* if you dont'. was his usual economical analysis

Probably in round 1 where it will cost us a few goals Against the scum, then will ease off for the rest of the round before being forgotten about for the rest of the season

I really see teams not manning the mark, but stand a metre or 2 behind it.

also be interesting what the AFL says the interpretation should be for a "Buddy Arc". is the person on the mark meant to stand still while he runs to the side, meaning he can effectively kick from next to them?

clubs, and journos, should be pushing for a public Q&A session where all questions can be asked, so the AFL doesnt have to make changes on the run when all the gaps in their rule become apparent.

Can’t happen Brodders, they would have to nuke their raison d’être. This is the very definition of the AFL mission statement.

All good. We get to show the world how stupid a new rule is when we go up against Carlton. Then there will be some frantic calls all over the place with the umpires for the remaining Rd 1 games being told to interpret them differently.

*smile* Buddy arc was never anything more than a lie to allow one or perhaps two players to cheat the rules without having to make a new rule that all players could utilise.

We've been pretty red hot on immediately standing the mark in games and then angling sideways to the mark thereby pressuring players from from entering the corridor n forcing more down the line play. Got a feeling this ones been set up to cut down our control of defensive set plays n we're about to get hammered with 50's by the maggots either for moving as soon as the mark is set or worse moving sideways before the maggots call play on when the ball carrier decides to take off.

An armchair in Sydney
It will be a *smile* first round. Game 1 2021 (Rich v Cartoon) and both teams will be reamed for not standing the mark. The next game will see a completely different interpretation with both teams allowed to do what they did in 2020. Game 3 will see two umpires ringing the bells and blowing for not standing the mark whilst umpire three will not blow once. Any interstate games will see the games umpired as per 2020 and the remaining Vic games will be a lottery as the AFL scrambles to clarify the rule.

Ultimately it will be benefit teams who have a free kick advantage.

Stupidity at AFL house writ large.

I honestly think they will trash this rule really quickly, after it becomes apparent that we are 10 goals better than 2nd best, instead of 5.

I can see Richmond Shock and Awe under this rule which facilitates playing on and switching.

nobody else has Marlion Pickett and Kmac, whose entire game is effectively built on manning 100m of mark each

More to the point they've changed the rules that are going to significantly disadvantage OL Mate Stevo Hockings club down at GBH SOOKdium.

This rule change (manning the mark) is crap and I can’t see it lasting the season.

Basically the closest player involved in the play has to man the mark - you can’t substitute another player, you can’t deviate in anyway so what happens if he stakes half a step either side, you can’t even step backwards - next they will ban manning the mark full stop.

Can‘t wait to see the mayhem when there is a kick after the siren - I used to like seeing half a team line up jumping all over the place.

And to add insult, a 50 metre penalty is way to harsh a penalty for what could be such a minor indiscretion. This rule is fundamentally changing the basic instinct that has been in the game since I can remember, goals should not be given away, they should be hard earned and come from using good footy skills, not from a dumb rule change - dumb, dumber and dumbest is this change.

Worst part is this rule gets tested on us first.
Expecting us to be crucified on this rule.

I reckon other clubs will be 20m kicking to the teammate nearest Kmac and Marlion to try tie them up and mess up our structure.

But it's way to Ross Lyon to work.

plus we are way too good and have way to much speed and to many options

So with the new man on the mark rule, what happens when a player marks near goal on an angle and then, as they all do, pretends to walk straight out and improve his angle? The man on the mark can't move, no ones allowed within 5 mts of the mark from either team, so he can just improve the angle without fear of anyone challenging him and play on and kick from nearly in front. Don't like this rule change. I read where umpires will be encouraged to allow latitude to the player with the ball, so that means inconsistencies, got can of worms written all over it.
