Collingwood supporters are funny.
Last week 4 out 5 supporters wanted him gone.
Tonight 4 out of 5 can't believe he resigned.

People are saying Eddie made Collingwood a force.
I don't see it. They might have better facilities (nearly all clubs these days have state of the art facilities) and bigger corporate sponsors but theyre still the same shitful side that just knows how to lose flags.
23 years 1 flag in 2010 after a draw exactly like in 1990.
With 4 losing GF's *favourites in 2

Interesting discussion point is Eddie
The “ pile on “ is a blight of where we are as a society , disgraceful
Not an Eddie fan , he biggest mistake was his poor choice of words at last weeks press conference . Everyone has an opinion . Those who think he is racist should go and ask Andrew Krakouer. His footy career was saved after a stint in jail by Eddie . Those close to Eddie say that he is extremely generous and caring individual. What you see on “ media street “ isn’t what you should judge him by , but many will and that’s fine
His many hours of community work for the Salvation Army and other charities is over and above what many do .
We are all bias and Eddie the media person I don’t really like , but to say Eddie is racist is absolutely rubbish
As I said his biggest mistake is his choice of words .
I dare not make a comments on Chris Egan or Harry O,BRIEN , I don’t want to be called a racist on two people who were moved on from there footy club

I couldn’t disagree more - his biggest mistake as you say, a poor choice of words, was enormous.

The trouble is what we say can be more destructive than say physical violence. We (as a society) continually underestimate the impact a poor choice of words can have on others..... and I think in this case it is different to being politically correct.

Eddie as a professional media person can’t brush this off and if it was his first public gaff he may well still be president but he has form.

I agree with the rest of your post, Eddie had done many great things and I hope he continues with that work, but I don’t believe continuing to be a media person or CFC president is now possible - he has burnt those bridges.

Pies the only club I doubt it. Who will be next ?. Nothing happpened at squeaky clean Dees. Harry O'Brien alias Hereteier Lumumba a indigenous player. Not indingeous to Australia as mummy Brazilian daddy Congolese/Angolan. Upset as he was called Chimp which would be an honour as Bobby Skilton three time Brownlow medal winners ,nickname was Chimp. Bobby should now put in a claim. Ape is insulting to some yet if they go to the zoo with their kids & come across this magnifcent majestic creature in his encolure do they bypass that enclosure ?. Leave that to you.
Over the journey, I've noted two specific characteristics of racists.

First, they tend to be humourless. I guess that comes with thinking their self-righteous views deserve to be seriously contemplated despite a lack of worldliness or even a basic ability to form and express a logical idea. It must also be hard work railing against common decency all the time.

Second, there is no evidence of empathy. They refer to others in condescending ways as if those people don't already feel diminished by leaders and systems that constantly knock them down. Wisdom and insight are not calling cards of the racist.

Final thought: if these sorts of pig-ignorant ideas are what we have to thank malfeasant voices in our media and political spheres for, it underlines the importance of McGuire being removed from his position of influence. You're not born this way, it's learned behaviour.

If we apply the same standards to ourselves as Collingwood has been held to account for then the Jack Dyer statue must be removed and the best and fairest award renamed.
Absolute crap, but it's fun to have a swipe at RFC right TBR?

Every club has had a dark past because Australia had a dark past.

It's how the clubs have dealt with it in recent times.

Collingwood
Spin Spin Bluster Spin Attack the Victim whenever a race related issue surfaced
It resulted in them having to commission a report
Report resulted in President launching into another Spin & Bluster session
President is sacked.

St Kilda
Robert Muir's story appears
Shocking treatment of a person because of colour
Treatment is still happening with the lack of acceptance back into club for past players gatherings
St Kilda jump on the front foot, sincerely apologise, promise to deal with it immediately
Work away from the public spot light with Muir to try and repair the wrongs and damage

I'm confident that we would deal with the situation better than the Pies. In fact, the work we are doing now with the Korin Gamadji Institute is all the proof you need that despite what may have happened in the past, it's not happening now at RFC and there is a lot of time, effort and money spent on bettering the lives of Indigenous youth.

totally agree - there was commentary at the end of one of the many eddie/Collingwood newspaper articles last week that was highly critical of the way the pies dealt with racism and compared that to the saints (which you have alluded to) and the tigers as two examples of clubs doing it so much better in desling with racism.

Of course all clubs have a poor record in the past but it how they deal with it now that counts.

It is a learned behaviour. Any white kid who grew up in the northern suburbs of Melbourne in the late 70's and 80's was racist including myself. It's how you unlearn that behavior and grow up as an adult that defines whether you continue to be a racist (including unconsciously).

Only speaking for myself, however after hearing/reading lots of thoughts on McGuire my dislike comes from the way he belittles people and then gives a little chuckle and it’s all ok , the big thing I dispise is the way he talks over people , my dislike has nothing to do with Collingwood, it’s simply the sly pig bully he is

Interesting to read in the Hard Way last night a couple of points from Benny's Ethical Framework from back in 2012:
- Our organisational culture is our most significant competitive advantage
- Diversity adds richness at every level of business. We believe we should invite it in, nurture it and provide a working environment where all of our people feel valued and safe.

For anyone who is involved in organisational culture there are some powerful statements in that which relate directly to race. Collingwood may have had something similar back then however my moneys on the RFC actually living those principles...

100% completely wrong.

Cousin Jack owned it. he acknowledged he did it publicly, he apologised directly and explicitly, he regretted it deeply, he changed.

couldn't actually say something less correct really BR

You should be a little bit ashamed of saying it.

I dont mind a bit of contrariness from time to time, but defending Collingwood and McGuire while Villifying Jack Dyer?

come on.

we do have the power to compel blokes to hand in their richmond jumpers you know.

consider yourself cautioned

What-about-isms are really tedious territory. Some people think they're clever raising them but generally don't think very hard about the fact each and every happening across the history of time is unique and incredibly difficult to compare. This is one such example.

Apart from the fact Dyer, a fundamentally decent fellow, later in life acknowledged the errors of his words and actions, this was a time when racism and bigotry went largely unchallenged. Aborigines needed permission to vote. The White Australia policy was state-sanctioned racial and cultural segregation. VFL clubs had 'no aborigines' policies.

To compare the two is just a distraction from the positive changes that have occurred in the AFL landscape in the past 24 hours.

As a side note it's one less football president/TV personality looking after their club interests on their media soapbox.

Still am adamant that AFL Presidents should not be able to hold dual roles in the mainstream media.

It's amazing how quickly it becomes uncomfortable when the spotlight switches within.

You don't have to go back many years to find a time when our record with indigenous players was deplorable. Without research I'd say we would have produced less indigenous talent than any other club in that period. Under a coach who missed out on a job he was favourite for at a club he was a favourite son of because of his response to a question about indigenous players. Of course we had Shane Edwards, once we realised he was indigenous that is.

At about the same time, Mal Brown was a special guest at an official RFC coterie fundraising luncheon, not long after calling indigenous players 'cannibals'. What a fun afternoon that must have been.

I wonder what Troy Taylor would tell you about Richmond's culture? Or Relton Roberts? When Andrew Krakouer said football clubs are 'culturally ignorant' he didn't seem to be just talking about Collingwood to me.

In 2018 we had a member suspended for 2 years for racially abusing Liam Ryan.

As for Jack Dyer, the hypocrisy to those responses vs the comments re Eddie McGuire is extraordinary.

Our Jack? Nooooooo, different time, he didn't know and he apologised. And he really, really, meant it. Everyone was doing it then.

Fact is his behaviour is a million times more racist than anything Eddie McGuire has ever done and he is the figurehead of our club.

Are we systemic yet?

If you look hard enough, racism isn't far away in any club, because it exists in society. As I've already said, I don't completely understand what is happening at Collingwood and I'm certainly not comfortable with lots of it. But I do know that if you look inside any club racism exists, because it exists in the world we live in.

It's why I hate all this retrospective outrage stuff. I'm interested in what people are going to do better tomorrow, not what they did worse yesterday.

of course richmond has a racist past and *smile* associates.

the rest is *smile* and you've missed the point

I think the salient point is that Richmond saw the problem, probably too late, and acted to start to fix it. I'm not going to argue Richmond were leaders in this area, we clearly weren't. But when the penny dropped there was some real response.

Collingwood may have seen the problem but did not try and address it, the penny never seemed to have dropped.

No one is denying what happened. That's not the point.

It's what clubs are doing now to address the issues. Are they trying to spin their away around it or are they tackling the issue head on.

No one should be surprised by what the report says. I doubt you really needed a report to state that the Pies, and all AFL clubs, have a dark past and they should puts things in place to prevent it ever happening again.

Some clubs have done, some are doing it, some will probably start. The only reason Eddie has been boned is because when it was time to stand up publicly, accept the past, be genuinely and sincerely apologetic, and take his club in a new direction, all he did was try to spin his way around it.

That's the point.
