That woulda been Morabito. Wouldn't have minded if we'd got him on draft day. Three or four Knee reco's in a row sure *smile* with that idea.
Scully, Trengove, Dusty, Morabito. Don't care who how or why, but we sure nailed the arse out of that draft.
After pick #3 - Dustin Martin all i can see is

Pick #19 - Benjamin Griffiths - Richmond
Pick #20 - Nathan Fyfe - Fremantle

Don't im starting to forget about Griffens.
Imagine if we drafted Martin & Fyfe in the same year.
We would've won 5 flags in a row.

I'm not sure whether the replay backs it up as I haven't watched it in full yet, but it felt like Carlton used the width of the G when attacking us. Ie. I think we are a very solid defensive side in the corridor, as when our attacking mids push forward of the stoppage the wings roll round in behind to cover, but this does sometimes expose the width.

Felt like Carlton attacked down the wings more and then tried to bring it inside.

Did anyone else notice this or should I rewatch the game? In the stands it did feel like they tried to stretch us with width.

That’s exactly what they did. Tried to spread our defence.

I thought I wasn't dreaming it haha. From memory the Saints did a bit of that last year as well.

It'll be interesting to see if others try it too as they did get out the back a bit and used our gameplan against us.

Yep, whole game seemed to be played on the member's wing (I know, I was over the other side).

We block the corridor, but in doing so we use up a few players. I haven't watched a replay but were Carlton able to outnumber us as we had more players blocking the corridor than they had in the corridor, and that gave them a loose man on the wing? I don't generally watch any replays but might just have a look.

Thats what they did. It didn't work too well as they had something like 41 I50's to our 75. The long way home will never get you enough looks. Their ball security i.e. not turning it over was better than previous years but still not good enough against us, but it did mean we were often defending deeper into their forward line than previously. This is a version of the Cants gameplan except the Blues do not flood as much. I think Teague has improved them but they still lack the cattle and have plenty of spuds on their list.

Thanks The Mole. We do clearly try and limit opposition teams to attacking along the flanks but it does mean we need to defend a lot of the ground and it is vital we close off the option to centre the ball near goals. With the way the game has sped up I think we will need to tweak the defensive set-up but it won't be a wholesale change of strategy, will take a bit of adjusting and, of course, the initial impact of the new rules will be different to the medium term impact.

I thought our plan was to limit access through the center and get the opposition playing down the flanks to contests which we use to get the ball back then attack

Indeed, but they managed to get behind our defence with an outnumber a few times, so the changes in the game are making a difference which requires adjustments.

Its also defensive in that it will take at least an extra kick to get the ball back into the centre when you attack down the flanks, which allows us more time to get players back and then intercept.

I thought Carlton attacked the flanks quite well, but we still defended the corridor well, the only times they seemed to get good stuff going through the corridor it was because we couldn't tackle Cripps.

They moved the ball very quickly which exposed us out the back. Other teams have done this to us in the past, probably the Saints are the most obvious one.

We do need a few adjustments to protect this, which is easier if they leave us with an extra man down back, when teams man us up in defence its harder, but then they have less players around the ground, which will mean our mids can dominate a bit more. Its always robbing Peter to pay Paul type stuff.

I got a lot of joy out of Gary Lyon's antics when he was talking about our win against Carlton, he just couldn't hide his jealousy and dislike of the Mighty Tiges.
He poses a question to Browny and Nick about Dusty, and then can't contain himself, he starts squirming in his seat, shuffling his notes. He looked like he was going to have a crankcase overpressure, he was in a world of hurt :rotfl1

Watch from about the 1.30 minute mark.
