New rule seems to open the game up from zoning.
but I think the long season 2020 has effected the top 4 from last year. all seem to be a little off compared to other teams

The dumbest rule ever.
A player can accidentally kick the ball towards the boundary, it can bounce 2 or 3 times and still get called as deliberate.
But a full back can run has far as he wants and if he kicks it out its a throw in.
What do really expect from Hocking.
The bloke has Shiit for brains.

I dont understand the theory of finalists getting less preseason.

Weren't we completing the ultimate, high intensity match sim with Geelong,

while everyone else was drinking piña coladas?

or is the theory around residual fatigue?

I hate basketball because it lacks physicality, the defence gets flooded and they have to have a shot clock and the ball just goes up and down the court until someone scores. What does that sound like?

'How do we stop this team?'
Never any specific rule changes to stop Wet Coke n Sydaknee strangling the game half to death with their flooding tactics a few years back.
No specific rule changes to stop Geelol's 500 manic possession a game play on at all costs tactic to defeat the flood.
No specific rule changes to stop Clarko's cluster, or the tactic of taking out the player on the mark to allow the ball carrier free movement.

Richmond winning flags because they bring some intense pressure in all aspects of the game, stand the mark extremely quickly and slightly cover the inside corridor while doing so. Disgusting, disgraceful, cheating tactics. Blight on the game that must be eliminated immediately.
The look on Gilligan's face, shows the measure of the man. Pathetic, secretive, manipulative *smile* ant. Shocking's just his pet cockaroach.

No matter the rule, coaches always find a way to defend against its intent. Ben Dixon argued teams will clog a 45-metre radius from the man with the free, forcing him to kick long. Maybe. Would leave defences vulnerable out the back if you can get it there. But they'll come up with something. Guaranteed.

Let's look at what we're currently working with. The 'lanes' David King pointed out that Sydney used - all players keeping their distance from each other, making it tough for our zoning defenders to cover for each other - spread our defence and cut us up. How do we combat that? If the opposition has as many good kicks as Sydney, it's tough. Better one-on-one defenders, particularly in the air, perhaps.

Clearly the new rules allow for a lot more kick-mark ball movement. We don't like that. Teams that mark the ball a lot against us often win. So how do we deny it? Maybe Dixon's right: we crowd the area to stop that first chip, or the next one. That's a lot of running, though. It's different to our rolling zone that moves in a coordinated wave across the ground. Sydney showed you can pick through that. We probably need to employ the tactic a bit ourselves. Long kicks to outnumbered contests and scrapping like hell is so 2017-20.

Leading forwards are back. Because the kicker can get clean air in front of himself, and zoning defences are stretched, it's hard for an interceptor to cut off the pass, especially when your best interceptor is in the stands faking a two-month knee injury.

How are our leading forwards? Are Jack and Tom getting separation? Do we lace them out if they do? We sat a few passes up going inside 50 on Saturday, not so much to leading players, but to guys dropping in the hole 40 out. I'm looking at you, Lambert. And Caddy. Pass floats in the air, giving defender time to come over the top and spoil. That's turnover and fast break city.

So, we need to kick better inside 50, and we also need another marking target. I know some believe the lack of stoppages negates the need for a second ruck, but I think we need another bloke who can take a grab up forward. A threat. To spread the defence, so we can kick hard and flat to one-on-ones, not high and slow to Tom v 3.

In an ideal world, Chol would seize the opportunity and compete consistently with the intent we've only seen sporadically. We can't count on it, but we should put it to him. CJ is only a few weeks away, and we know he will compete with the requisite effort, and he's a fantastic mark, but he doesn't move or kick as well or have ground game like Mabs. Nevertheless, he's probably going to be our guy.

The other option is Clark Balta. Noah Kent. I don't like using our key defender as second ruck. Miller's blisteringly quick. And looks to have come on significantly. Do we give him a crack alongside DTLD and unleash the beast?

What else?

Half back. Can we break a line to save ourselves? Well may we say, "where the *smile* is Houli?" because for all their strengths, Baker and Short do not come through the line and slice 'em up the middle. Why do you think Dimma threw the Hail Eggy?

Stack, Stack, my kingdom for a Stack. (At both ends, woah is us.) Maybe we reinvent The Prince at half back. But he's become hesitant with the ball and the position requires decisiveness. Shai could go there if he can't get a kick elsewhere. But we need him to get a kick elsewhere.

Pace. No slowies. Bye, Cads. Seeya Aarts. Get RCD in. Hugo. We need to find some youth, but what we have is limited. We have no Guldens or Campbells in the magoos but we might find a Warner or Wicks.

Pray Sydney Stack gets physically and mentally fit. Hope MoJu can be as precocious as his recent relatives. (Have you seen that Kozi fella. Woah. That. MoJu has that type of game: hit hard, pick pockets, goal.)

Interesting times. The game's telling us to change. Dimma rightly said it's a gift. Time for growth.

We can whinge about lesser men trying to kneecap us, or we can find a new way to cut their *smile* ing heads off. Let's get on with it.

Yeah all fair enough points above and well argued.

I do have faith in the club to pivot their game plan into something that suits the new rules. It just shites me that its had such a fundamental impact on us and can't help but feel like we have been unfairly punished for our success.

One good thing that might come out of it is playing our younger blokes and turning the list over to keep the team hungry. I imagine the likes of Martyn, RCD and Ross will all get games this year, and perhaps at the expense of stalwarts like Lambert or Graham.

What a garbage article. Apparently football was on its knees and the public disinterested in the game until this tweak of the rules has made everyone fall back in love with it again. Pigs arse. What was wrong with making the player kick over the man on the mark?

I agree with what you say TBH and were just going to have to accept it and deal with it as best we can, meaning we can't be too top heavy and slow.

But Wayne Campbell describing SHocking as the saviour of football really grinds my gears. Wish comments on that article were turned on as i reckon there would be quite a bit of dissent.

I hate this rhetoric that the game was on its knees. Record membership levels, record attendances (before Covid) tells me that the people were happy and were buying the product. So the AFL decides to change that product despite their customers telling them they liked it.

If the game was on its knees, you would see dwindling attendances and dwindling membership. The AFL has an out clause on that this year, if they are down (on 2019 levels) then its because of Covid.

See, a journo wrote that article, and who has thought right along that the game was in trouble? Media. Too many people with too much time and not enough to fill it with. So they invent a problem, get all their mates to carry the torch, and OMG the sky is falling. Make a hurried and poorly thought through change and wind up having created a genuine issue to try and fix a problem that never existed in the first place.

Lot of sulking and hand wringing on here about the rules.

Spook hit the nail on the head. Need to get on with it. The biggest thing we look for when recruiting is pace and fitness - exactly what we need. Time to put it into practice.

We've lost one game and that wasn't due to the rules. It was because we were lazy and lacked energy compared to our opposition.

That is on us. Not the AFL.

Much appreciate your thoughts spook , especially about our forwards and attack..
All the talk has been about our defence and how teams are cutting us up , haven't seen much talk about how we should exploit the rules ourselves and improve our scoring power..

One thing to get on with it but it's arguably going to take some time.
We've built a list based on what has worked for us for several years now.
If we fall away because the game was changed on us well..

We've retooled our game before, Olds. Takes about a month. This change might be quicker if our blokes can grasp, "Hit up. Spot up."

it is rare, but Navy you are speaking sense.

we were *smile*, new rules or no new rules. we got spanked in the middle. we turned the ball over down back, and we gave away a lot of marks inside 50.
i reckon i have seen the same thing happen to use 3 or 4 times over the last 4 years. and every time people say we are done, and need to make radical change.
no we dont, maybe some small adjustments, but we need to start by winning the ball when it is in dispute, or at least pressuring the opposition so we can intercept. we then need to use the ball effectively when we do have it. history suggests we will do these things regularly enough during the season, and will do them them when it really matters.

I’m wondering if you are better off not standing anyone on the mark at all and basically standing the mark 5 metres behind where it is taken. This way if the player plays on you
Can run forwards and put pressure on their kick instead of them already being past you and same thing if they have a teammate run from behind and give it to them.

standing the mark you are effectively out of the current play AND the next possession and only force a straight kick to go higher and are at risk
Of giving away 50 with a brain fade. Very easy for opposition to create an outnumber otherwise. I think this way you can still force the next kick more easily go to a contest.

it’s probably only When you get quite close to goal that it becomes useful to actually be on the mark.

other option as others have pointed out is hard one on ones. That leaves you much more exposed to over the backs and/or a mismatch getting hold of you.

We looked terrible on the weekend due to our horrible disposal when not pressured and also getting reamed on clearances.
