Go ahead with development or postpone with more member input until finances stabilise

So, on the one hand we are told that the development and demolition of the Jack Dyer stand and the naming of the centre will be the William Cooper centre will commence soon.On the other hand the club has been quite open about the financial difficulties it faced last year and the uncertainty of the financial landscape this year. The club has also re started its campaign asking members to donate to the club to allow it to stay in front and provide needed finances for administration and the football department.
During this uncertain time should the club be putting on hold these plans until it’s revenue streams stabilise? Or does it power ahead with its grand plans?

Yep, go ahead, the facilities need to improve if Richmond are to continue to be a successful club and Punt Rd really does need renovation.

Yes, they will have to borrow money but now is the time to borrow with interest rates so low. Should we wait until things are more stable? If we do interest rates will likely rise. Plus, renovating Punt Rd will contribute to the stability of the club.

Don't wait. It's a lot more fun watching the other teams trying to catch up to us.

We are in a strong position with both membership and sponsorship. The cost of borrowing funds is low.
The AFL if it runs true to form, is already looking for ways to equalise in a manner that will cost us.
I think we should push ahead with planning and approvals while seeking funds in support. As we get closer to breaking ground our financial position will also be clearer and the value of the lease of future naming and branding rights also.
Another flag and more financial success is as close to certain as it can be. Go for it!

No cant agree
I appear to be one of the few people who are appalled this stand is supposed to go and make way for something new
There are always ways to incorporate the old into the new
A great designer/architect should be able to do it
Why does history and nostalgia and everything else wrapped up in that stand count for nothing ??

I'm all for heritage but that stand is not particularly significant. They have mowed down a hell of a lot of the MCG over the decades and I think there was a lot more heritage value in some of the stands we have lost there. The Jack Dyer stand, which has only had that name for a limited time anyway (wasn't called that when I was a kid), is an example of early 20th century football stands but not all that unique and I would argue not a great example anyway.

We really need to get better facilities. Watching that Amazon doco you saw the facilities at Gold Coast, West Coast, Adelaide and they are massive. Great facilities. Punt Rd is miles ahead of what it once was, and I went to Princes Park for an AFLW game earlier this year and Carlton are well short of decent facilities too. We need bigger and better facilities to keep competitive.

Agree 100% Tempany. Coming back to Melbourne from a few years OS I love the beautiful Victorian and other period architecture and appreciate it like I never did before. Other cities are knocking it all down, compare Melbourne to Sydney and you'll notice the difference. It's a beautiful grandstand and should be preserved.

Not everything the club does is right, and this is one thing they've got badly wrong IMO.

Just because other things have been demolished does not make demolishing this stand right.

Given the choice of demolishing the stand or leaving it intact and having to move our training base, rip it down.

Unless of course we want to head back out to Craigieburn.

There's a saying in the building industry. ..... 'Nothing money can't fix!'

No doubt. I wonder how much it will cost us to move Brunton Ave, Punt Rd and the train lines & station out 50m.

Agree.

Old doesn't mean significant. Sometimes old is just old.

I've spent a lot of time at PRO over the last decade or so, both sitting in and looking at the Jack Dyer stand.

It's ugly. Uncomfortable. Too small. And that's even before you consider the state of disrepair.
