A lot of people are putting Syd's performance decline down to confidence, but I can't unsee that footage of him at training before he went back to WA. It was like watching myself running.
There's no doubt it comes down to fitness more than anything with Syd. Talent has never been the issue. He'll get found out again at AFL level pretty quickly if he can't run out games. The 2020 performances were close to embarressing. Probably should have been dropped a lot earlier than he was but Coach kept hoping he'd discover the match fitness & persevered. It didn't eventuate.
Was very fit at the start of the 2019 season with plenty to prove & did in spades, before losing his way. If he puts in a truckload of work he's a chance. If not, he's no chance.

Was he fit at the start of 2019? That was the year he came over trialling as the SSP and I seem to remember the stories of him really struggling, throwing up, totally exhausted, sleeping a lot, came last in runs.

There are a million kids wanting to be a rap star
Yes, but aren't our players always talking about the journey rather than the destination?

Sydney doesn't need to get a million downloads to make it worthwhile. As a musician I can tell you that making music is incredibly therapeutic for those that have the bug. Especially for people who've got stuff to unload, like so many who are attracted to hip hop culture. It's saved lives.
I say give the kid a mic and let him speak. I don't know why anyone would assume it would take over the rest of his life any more than any other non-footy activity.

That's not my understanding Tim. I remember him busting his absolute gut that pre season & won a spot on the rookie list because of how hard he worked.

i watched stackman live in 2020 and he never embarrassed himself oldy.

he didnt recapture 2019, but i have no doubt 2nd year blues were exacerbated in hub iso.

i clearly recall being joyous at one game on Metricon (brisbane?), when he gut glided and impacted several contests, spewed, and did it again.

it was pure '19 and it brought me to my feet to profess my love for stackman.

i beleive he will be our story of 2021.

hes the player we find

The last time you ran, I swear I saw your shadow beat you.
Think the only running you’ve done in the last 15yrs is running late or running out of time.

Agree

Syd let himself down in his preparation for the 2020 pre-season, the club let him and the players who had busted a gut down too. On the back of how he returned after the xmas break he didn't deserve to get a game in those first few games.
I love Syd's story and desperately want him to fulfil his potential, but I hope he is made to earn his recall to AFL footy.

In 2019 he played with a chip on his shoulder so big an angry swarm of mad seagulls couldn’t remove.

Has he lost his chip?
I saw little signs in the VFL last week that he is getting that chip back, he threw his weight around a bit. It might only be a potato peel at the moment, but that chip isn't far away.

One thing that was very noticeable to me about Syd was the decline is his ball handling in his second year. In his debut season his ball handling was outstanding, the next season he fumbled the ball a hell of a lot.
A small sample size, but I thought Syd showed those year one clean hands against Casey on the weekend, especially when he went into the midfield.
I hope he keeps playing on the ball, it will be great for his fitness, and ball handling and he seems to love it.
Unique factors though, covid interruptions, sec year blues , here’s hoping he has learnt a thing or two , build some confidence , start killing it at vfl and see him return to afl action, there’s a couple a slots open

He actually started the year quite well but let himself down during the break. If there was ever an excuse for second year blues...

i think a lot of it was between the ears .

in 19 he had a confident arrogance , give it to me , i want the ball , i can do anything,

in 2020 he seemed to develop a fear of making a mistake after making a few and he lost his mojo ,

I remember that game against brisbane ,our midfield was depleted , he and bolton were taking it out of the middle as we touched them up and it looked like he had turned the corner

Let's not gloss over it, his fitness last year was terrible. He couldn't get to contests, it was bad to watch. Hopefully he's putting in the hard work now so we might see him sometime this season.

Its his 21st birthday day.
But he still looks like he hasn't grown up yet.
No wonder no club besides us picked him up.
He needs to stop with the Instagram shiit and pull his finger out otherwise his short career will be over in October.

Were you your mature self and doyen of the community at 21? Give him a break. Kids are different these days. They have to have a life outside of footy and unfortunately/fortunately social media is the life blood of this generation. You'd prefer it to not be public but at least the club can check his pulse through it.

Foster the creativity and embrace the imperfections. Isn't that what got us here?
