I noticed they seemed to be quite lenient at times with the standing on the mark, which was not helped by only calling stand sometimes. If that is the rule, call it every time there is someone on the mark, not only some of the time. FFS is that too difficult too?

As per previous explanation, the Wood one wasn't a free and if I'm remembering the Cordy and Lipinski ones they were no prior as well.

The West one was clearly holding the ball and an error.
TBR when was "genuine attempt" added to the umpires rules for HTB? When "dropping the ball" morphed into "incorrect disposal" I don't remember there being a loophole allowing for genuine attempt. If you fail to dispose of it legally it is HTB, no grey area, much easier to adjudicate.

Same. And not just our game. Much more movement and no 50”s. Umps sick of saying stand?

No doubt it’s a tad unfair to compare, however listening to Leppitsch on Sen compared to the footy journos , shows exactly how poor they are

The Mackintosh one was ridiculous. Who runs by for a handball way behind the man-on-the-mark (the idea is to collect it as you pass by), then runs directly, straight into him to be tackled to the ground?

KMac, that's who.

So lucky not to be penalised but cost us a forward entry. Just very odd at this level.

The KMac one was very odd, no idea why he wanted the ball given he was running straight towards a player about to tackle him. Prior opportunity? On balance I would say yes.

As for "dropping the ball", yeah, never been a rule, has always been shorthand for not disposing of the ball properly or whatever wording they used to use. Maybe I'll look it up, I'm pretty sure our ancient copy of Football the Australian Way has the rules circa 1971 printed in there.

AFL umpires coach Hayden Kennedy has quit, most probably had a gutful of SHockings continual rule changes.

Or he's dead against the "Sorry, we got it wrong" admissions from Richardson.

Reckon he’s been sacked.

After a 30-year career, he’s quit mid-season amidst a pandemic without mention of a promotion only to say ‘I’d like to thank the AFL for the opportunity, aw gee I hope I had a positive impact’ with Hocking praising him excessively on the way out.

I wonder if the home team in finals could pick the 3 umps would even out the disparities, or just mean bottom 8 sides get shafted?

I don’t know where to start with this one ezy.

Can’t have clubs picking umpires.

really need umpiring to be completely independent of AFL and clubs, but with more transparency on review and transparent feedback mechanisms etc. they should have a stated goal to get the accuracy AND consistency of both decisions and NON decisions higher. (And report on this as an average and internally by umpire)

The fact it even appears that the AFL influences week to week umpiring focus is ridiculous. (And even worse if that is true)

In the aftermath of Friday night's game, I spent some time trawling this thread and the game day boards (Scraggers and Tigers) over at Big Footy, and our game day board here.

To say Eleni Glouftsis copped a caning for her efforts would be putting it politely.

I re-watched the third quarter last night and paid particular attention to the umpiring, and to Glouftsis, especially.

Watching the game live, I didn't much notice the umpires but based on what I subsequently read, I was expecting a shitshow of a performance, especially from Glouftsis.

First, a disclaimer. I've only watched one quarter on replay so far.

But ... I didn't identify a single error made by Glouftsis in that quarter. The closest I got was her free awarded to Edwards for holding against Macrae at a centre bounce, which was there but was soft. She also awarded a holding free against Riewoldt to Keath or Cordy that was at the softer end of the scale, but was also there.

The only really dud decision made in that quarter was by Fleer against West for high contact on Houli, which looked suspect at the time and didn't get better on the replay. The HTB that wasn't given against McIntosh when he ran into Wood on the mark was the correct call—clearly no prior. I think that was Fisher officiating.

I want to give Glouftsis some credit. Bad bouncing drives me nuts. Her bouncing is as good as any umpire going around. Her communication on the field is good. And I understand she had umpired a full game the night before. Is the angst really warranted?

I suspect she gets noticed more for the obvious fact she's a female. I'm less convinced about the qualities of Williamson and Deboy than I am her.

I'll re-watch the final quarter tonight and follow up this post if I have more to add.

the AFL are sending out a survey after you attend a game (I assume I ticked a box on Ticketek saying they can sell my data to anybody?)

they are clearly trying to find out how much they can gouge on the price of chips and whether they should hire the wiggles to play the breaks,

but there is room to add your thought.

I filled all the boxes with ' new rules crap and ever-changing leading to dreadful, inconsistent umpiring, detracting from the match day experience '

I suggest people do the same.

if enough people get on the movement, then the AFL will have an entire movement to ignore.

powerlessness to the people
