Just watched the Wood decision. Agree entirely with TBR, no free. He had no prior and tried to kick it. He didn't take too long to attempt the kick IMO. The commentators have no idea, I only heard it on the radio as coming to ground late and they were carrying on like it was an obvious free. It wasn't.

I'll watch the game again at some stage and note what I think were the wrong calls. From memory I thought it was a reasonably OK umpired game. The Bont flop just before half-time was the worst call I can remember.

No idea but to my knowledge 'dropping the ball' has never been a free kick.

are you honestly suggesting that millions of us have been yelling the wrong thing, at the wrong time, at the footy for 150 years?

surely incorrect disposal = dropping the ball?

how many ways can you incorrectly dispose of it?

you could bounce it off your head, flick it with your tongue, twerk it with your buttocks, horsey root it?

and indeed, all these have occurred over the centuries,

but I think 980 of every thousand incorrect disposals, could reasonably be classified as having

dropped it, or thrown it.

In the aftermath of Friday night's game, I spent some time trawling this thread and the game day boards (Scraggers and Tigers) over at Big Footy, and our game day board here.

To say Eleni Glouftsis copped a caning for her efforts would be putting it politely.

I re-watched the third quarter last night and paid particular attention to the umpiring, and to Glouftsis, especially.

Watching the game live, I didn't much notice the umpires but based on what I subsequently read, I was expecting a shitshow of a performance, especially from Glouftsis.

First, a disclaimer. I've only watched one quarter on replay so far.

But ... I didn't identify a single error made by Glouftsis in that quarter. The closest I got was her free awarded to Edwards for holding against Macrae at a centre bounce, which was there but was soft. She also awarded a holding free against Riewoldt to Keath or Cordy that was at the softer end of the scale, but was also there.

The only really dud decision made in that quarter was by Fleer against West for high contact on Houli, which looked suspect at the time and didn't get better on the replay. The HTB that wasn't given against McIntosh when he ran into Wood on the mark was the correct call—clearly no prior. I think that was Fisher officiating.

I want to give Glouftsis some credit. Bad bouncing drives me nuts. Her bouncing is as good as any umpire going around. Her communication on the field is good. And I understand she had umpired a full game the night before. Is the angst really warranted?

I suspect she gets noticed more for the obvious fact she's a female. I'm less convinced about the qualities of Williamson and Deboy than I am her.

I'll re-watch the final quarter tonight and follow up this post if I have more to add.
She is x1000 better umpire than Deboy and Mollison. They are both *smile* cheats. Eleni and Fisher need to be given every one of our games for the rest of the year

Agree. She's a better ump than DeBoy, Ogorman and the blonde bloke.

Eleni should stop umpiring and go back to the CWood Cheer Squad that she grew up in as a kid. She's a terrible umpire.

Watching the replay, she constantly kept yelling "Play On !" without any need to. Guy would go back after a mark, kick, then she'd yell out "Play On !!!" afterwards. Everyone knows its play on.

*** annoying.

Haven't watched it again, but watching on the tv Friday night I thought she was ok.
She was a throwback, she paid free kicks, that were free kicks. Not like nearly all the umpires nowadays who have forgotten that there are rules like holding the ball, incorrect disposal and holding the ball, prior opportunity etc.

I'll take annoying over cheats like DeBoy and Mollison any day.

Maybe the game has changed that much that none of us have any idea about what actually constitutes a rule let alone how to adjudicate it. Apart from the few of course.

She's a better ump than DeBoy,

thats like saying she has a kinder heart than Pol Pot.

But I thought she gave us a pretty good deal in relation to everyone else.

and I think possibly she knocked back the Ch7 sound bloke, so he turns her mike up to 11 so she annoys the *smile* out of us all.

No idea but to my knowledge 'dropping the ball' has never been a free kick. You've always been allowed to try and dispose of it when tackled and it's only a free if you hold it too long
The other one is “taking his eyes off the ball”. When , for eg, a player is about to mard the ball but an opponent comes from front on, 9 times out of 10 the opponent incurs a free . Commentators say “he took his eyes off the ball”. Don’t think that’s in the rule book.

Absolutely. Spot on. There is no such thing as "eyes on the ball" and nor is there anything in the rules that prevents you from contesting front on in the air if you don't break the rules e.g. head high, or over the shoulder etc.

I dunno how many times I've seen a player spoil the ball legitimately front on yet an umpire panics and pays a free kick. Does my head in.

Yep, the opponent has had to learn to do a pirouette just before contact so he’s facing the ball and has “eyes on the ball” so that he doesn’t contravene a rule that doesn’t exist.....

The call has always been "BAAALLLLLL" Which meant "Holding the ball" for one teams supporters & " Dropping the ball" for the other teams supporters. Strangely for the same piece of play. :))

ive always joined in 'BAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLL' for holding the ball

and 'He *smile* DROPPED IT!' for incorrect disposal

if I ran the AFL, the rule book would be 1 page long

in the back, too high, holding the man, dropping the ball, holding the ball, throw, kicking in danger.

of the 'new' rules, I'd keep 'chopping the arms'
