Not sure it is at that level. We are $1.50 favourites. GWS barely beat Essendon and we should be much better than them.

Still reckon that was an epic win. Backs to the wall. No recognised midfield but we still got it done.

Sorry all, didn’t realise merging threadsome of you missed the game day thread.

In future if anyone else starts a thread I will take it over to avoid ignores etc.

Start them all now. Hide them from view, Unhide when it's game day

Just back from the footy, great atmosphere. Probably one of the most engaging and heat pumping H&A games we've had in a long time, probably similar to the euphoric feeling at the end of the Swans game in 2016 when Lloyd kicked after the siren.

Felt total backs to the wall, so many players out, playing 22 Giants and 3 umps out there who quite frankly slaughtered us tonight. I'll save that for the umps thread though.

What a great feeling to win though, Bakes is a god, a little one, but a god all the same. Even when all the other mids come back, I want Bakes back in there. RCD looked great, I thought Naish was good too,m 1 contest on the wing in the 3rd really stood out for me when we scrambled a kick out from our D50, looks like Riccardi is going to take an easy mark and put it nack inside 50, but Naish made a great contest of it and I think it ended up in a ball up. Hugo didn't look out of place. Nank, Dusty and Grimes were immense.

On the downside though, I was wondering how we were going to play 8 defenders and it didn't work in the 1st half. Balta looked lost up the ground, Broad was too small for Hogan and we generally didn't look right back there. Moving Vlastuin further up the ground and Balta back into defence was a key change that worked a treat. Just on Hogan, when he got that free in front of goal when Broad threw him to the ground, Broad reacted like that because Hogan gave him a whack in the face, I'll bet that wasn't repeated on tv??

I'm almost at the point though with Lynch that he needs to be dropped and find some form in the 2's, I know it won't happen but with the form of CCJ, now might be the time to do it.

How disgraceful was his call for the arm drag even before he hit the ground in the contest. Pathetic Jesse.
Fraudulent. Should be cited for staging. Or is it only Richmond players who cop that?

Well that was tense.

In the first half we were getting beaten too badly in the middle. The defence is not at its best, but defence can't be effective if you are getting beaten up in the middle. I thought our defence was letting them pass off to a better option too easily and not tight enough to prevent GWS players from leading into space and getting an uncontested mark. But really we were losing it in the middle. You can lose clearances but you have to put enough pressure on to make them hurried clearances, allowing enough time and space for the opposition to clear accurately gives your defence no chance.

Thought the pressure was ramped up in the second half, probably from mid way in the third really. This made a huge difference. Their delivery into the forward line was not as good with our increased pressure. We stopped getting beaten in contested possessions and the GWS scoring percentage for inside 50 entries dropped.

We don't seem to be so good at spreading and currently very bad at defending the spread. It is certainly something we have to fix as in our losses that is where we have been exposed and it has led to heavy scoring by the opposition.

Still have messy forward 50 entries. This is quite an issue, something needs to change. Some of the runs down the ground are suffering from bad handpasses not going cleanly to team mates too, that has to improve.

The youngsters were doing well tonight. Bakes is simply amazing. Thought RCD got involved and contributed well. Mansell, like Vlastuin, apparently has no head so is seemingly ineligible for high tackle free kicks. Ralphsmith did not look out of place. Solid first game for him and some good signs. I think Ralphsmith can adjust to AFL level and can be a good player.

Lynch is a worry. Not sure what his role is supposed to be but whatever it is I don't like it. Seems to be lacking confidence at the moment, needs to be freed up. Look at some of his play when he is on the lead, early 3rd quarter in the 2019 PF springs to mind. He needs a different role, should be creating space, presenting and getting a few uncontested marks. More confidence would improve goal kicking too IMO as we know he can kick, so there must be some other issue.

The umpiring was simply weird. For about 2.5 quarters holding the ball was not a rule any more. Then it occurred to them that apparently it still is a rule and they started to pay some, but by no means all or even a majority, of holding the ball frees. How the players are supposed to work this out part way through a game is a mystery. You could see players from both sides just assuming that they wouldn't get pinged for holding the ball for around 2.5 quarters. Then the maggots switched. Frees even for about half the game, then they start paying plenty to GWS, which is a bit weird too because GWS generally get reamed by the umpires too.

Crowd was pathetic. What was it, about 18.5k? There is more to this than Docklands and COVID. When was the last time Richmond had a crowd that small at a home game in Melbourne? People aren't going to the football. Crowd numbers are down across games compared to 2019. So much for the new rules supposedly making the game more entertaining. The media can ignore this all they like, us fans know what we see, and we see people staying away in droves. But I suppose the AFL doesn't care, they make money out of TV rights and sponsorship, I presume it is more the clubs that make money out of crowds. So why would the AFL care?

Bloody great to get the win though.

Still no idea why CCJ is not being given a go, we were clearly in need of a second ruck tonight and a third tall forward would have been damned useful.

Not counting last year, the last time Richmond drew a crowd of fewer than 19,000 to a game in Melbourne was Round 12, 2004 v Fremantle at the MCG - 18,666.
We were 13th at the time and Freo 8th.

huh?

lynch worked his arse off all game. Presented and presented and presented again. Kicked poorly but did a power of work.

Jack is the key forward who has let the team down. He’s been nothing short of pathetic the last 2 weeks.

Well coached by Dimma. I liked him rotating Aarts and Vlastuin through the midfield, a match winning move. It allowed Dusty to do what Dusty does in the forward line.

The script of our Dynasty,

is as predictable as a scandi-noir forensic crime series on Netflix,

or an 80's Clint Eastwood western

  1. early season injury Tsunami, seemingly only to top 10 players
  2. complications and delays to injuries
  3. a scandal
  4. champs on canvass
  5. unlikely hero/es emerges
  6. win epic battle when all seems almost lost
  7. injured stars trickle back into the line-up
  8. build momentum
  9. have a minor complication
  10. win premiership

On a completely different note, watching the broadcast it was very apparent that a few of the GWS boys are, how do I put this delicately? Fat! At least for AFL players anyway.

It was very noticeable when compared to our players who are all, without exception, very lean. No wonder we ran over the top of them.

Only one win away from the 4 ,

All our injuries apart from soldo are relatively short term ,

This season is more open than it appeared 24 hours ago , amazing what a win can do

Massive win. The Giant are a machine, big fast and skilled. Whitfield makes them a top side. We all know they lack a bit of heart, thats the knock, but they came to win. They executed. We scrapped, hit every contest and hung in, got a bit of luck and got over the line. Huge for belief, both for this years campaign and also the young players and win loss. It is amazing how closely the script is following 19 and 20.
