Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

The problem is little Johnny’s father relying on behavioural cues from footballers and coaches and various sportsman.
I don’t watch a Grand Prix and start driving like Lewis Hamilton.
Choose your role models carefully. Point out examples of poor behaviour to your kids. Eg Deboys horrendous umpiring.
Admirable stance, but the real world is very different.

Admirable stance, but the real world is very different.
The stance is the correct one, the real world won't be effected at all by the actions of a coach on the TV in a game of footy. Its an old mind set and its being used to protect the umpires on the field in the AFL not the umpires running around in the bush. If the old saying was true, wouldn't the bush umpires be mimicking Razor and co and acting like goose's too.
The issue the is actually the AFL by trying to enforce a ban on natural justice in 2021. It won't work. People and society have fundamentally different expectations about what to expect in life now as opposed to 1980. Everyone expects fairness. Everyone has a voice.
The AFL is beyond reproach and that's the issue for me.

They can express their opinions, they just have to use the right channels. That's all that article is saying.

Clubs can and do put together packages all the time for questions and clarifications from the umpiring department, and they have regular visits and other interactions through the year.

All the AFL is saying there is don't do the stuff that impacts badly on the way other levels interact with them, like storm their rooms at half time or tee off on them on the ground.
Who stormed the umpires rooms?
That is not acceptable
I have not read this thread in full and I haven't heard about this

Jason McCartney, GWS's poor man's Balmey

he went off his chops at the umps in their rooms at HT, and was fined the same as $hai defending his mate who had been punched ion the face defending his girlfriend who had been vilified and harassed,

Gee. The umps essentially protected at the same level as some pissed *smile* violent misogynist in a nightclub

the only thing consistent about The AFL, is their inconsistency/

the difference was the reporting: Mccartney was reported in headline as 'Massive Fine'; $hais was 1 line embedded in the article about a donation. $20K: $20K. parity

Look at the dictatorship immune to criticism yet we had decisions cost games this year not included our one against Port out of bounce.Any sporting code umpiring and organisation can be questioned aslong it's in the right manner there not accountable pathetic.

How about the AFL also analyse why people are driven to those actions. There's a clear issue that is getting worse.

Shai's penalty being deemed a donation allows the AFL to go above the AFLPA max limits for player fines. But I wonder if it also allows the club to pay if for him.

I thought the same. A club donation and we walk away, nothing to see here boys

Whichever way you shake it going into the umps rooms is a disgrace and not on.
I ran an ammo club for long enough to know how hard it was to get and keep umpires. And how isolated and thankless a job it is.
Fine should've been a soft cap 100k.
Clubs have to respect the umpires especially on game day

Yeh, as a fan I get pissed off with their decisions and vent by booing (pretty mature hey) but I also am involved in coaching an underage side and whilst you can get frustrated at inconsistencies we have a zero tolerance policy to umpire abuse from coaches, players and parents. I haven't observed any poor behaviour towards the umpires in the games so far this year and hope it continues.

I still think the AFL needs to be more transparent about umpiring and give some stats and feedback on how they are going. Refusing discussion and comment on it just makes it worse.

I hope I‘m never one those immoral, law-breaking citizens who end up behind bars or donating to charity.

While solving a lot of world problems with ToOheys over a cyber beer today, the one thing Ive been harping on about it’s not so much the umpires but the bloody grey rules that are making our great game so frustrating. I’m a big believer in trying to make the game simpler by making rules more black and white. I wonder if the game was started now what rules would be locks in starting up a sport, firstly I don’t think these would necessarly make the game better, however I think they’d probably make it less frustrating. 1 ball ups , throw ins, just throw it up umps no waiting once you have the ball, up she goes , 2 last touch out of bounce , however None of this bull *smile* handball it onto a players boot to get it out of bounce, 3 hate it because it’s not traditional but this is what every other sport does that keeps it simple, if it goes through the goals it’s a goal , dosent matter if it hits the post or not . 4 let’s go back to what made the game great, toughness, competivnes, reward the player who wants the ball most, if the player gets the ball first reward him, obviously don’t let a player just sit on it, but let’s not penalise a player for getting the ball, an whole we are at it, let’s try a wee bit of common sense ( google it ) with the MRP, how embarrassing that is to the AFL, lots more tweaks could be done , however let’s do the most important thing for the game, get rid of SHocking, no Stevie high scoring dosent automatically make the game better, some of the greatest games ever played were low scoring arm wrestles.

I rest my case :))

There was a review aimed at simplifying the rules only a few years ago. It's all gone to sh!t under Hocking.

AFL tweaks rules in bid to open up play, simplify the game (paywalled)

AFL general manager of football operations Steve Hocking wants the size of the current rule book slashed by about half from its various clauses over 83 pages. “What we’re looking at is a consistency of application,” Hocking said.

Thanks Steve.

The AFL contributed to the problem by not cracking down after Chris Scott approached the umpires at quarter time. And the AFL media giggled along.

Not so when Hardwick highlights a 20 to 6 half time free kick count.

15.54 - Rioli tackles Bailey who had only just gathered the ball. He drops the ball, Rioli continues with the tackle and is pinged for holding the man. The free is probably there but Rioli unsighted and doesn't know opponent had dropped the ball.

13.09 - Balta kicks long to Reiwoldt in one on one with Starcevich on wing. Starcevich holds Jacks arm with 2 hands which allows Rich to mark uncontested. No free. Note Jack only going one handed in the contest. (see photos). Reiwoldt 5.jpgReiwoldt 6.jpg
