Bolton plays nothing like Rioli. He’s been mostly midfield, and is a major upgrade.

Not sure the changes make us slower? Pickett and Rioli the only outs with any pace? If anything I’d argue improved ground speed. And ball movement.

This is a much better lineup, the midfield improvement is significant and IMO will prove way too good for the crows.

Yep Bolton couldn’t be more different to Rioli. We are banking on more clearances, that’s for sure

No way Chol plays back. He will spend a bit of time on the pine but will push into the ruck j and then forward.

We will predominantly start with Jack and CCJ up forward but at times will also have Chol up there as that third tall.

This is how we set up when both Soldo and Nank were playing.
Nank has been getting back more this year than I have seen in other years. Chol and CCJ to do all ruck tap outs forward of centre. While Nank will cover the middle and backline.

Spot on, significant structural changes

Jeez I like our structure a lot more this week.

If Caddy, Chol, CJ and Jack all provide targets up forward we look shitloads better.

We’re fielding a more classical setup. Dimma and co could be unveiling this year’s ice cream flavour.

Last time I felt so good about the structure was the last half of 2019
With Melbourne, Brisbane and Geelong being amongst this year's benchmark sides, the simple question we must answer is this: what flexible combination of players, tactics and gameplan(s) gives us the best chance to stifle either the Cats, Lions or Dees on any given day, in any given conditions?

Over recent weeks, we've experimented with certain players and structures that emphasise speed and dominance at ground level; now the experiment shifts a little towards greater ruck presence and marking power (potentially).

In two weeks time, as we enter the bye, we'll hopefully have a better idea what that best combination of players, tactics and gameplan(s) could look like.

Discuss.

That:s a big assumption you're making. Caddy will play wing, that's where he's played his last few games. Might roll him forward on occassion. We need to cover Astbury in the backline so will be interesting ti see how we restructure. Maybe a different role for Chol. I vaguely remember him being tried there before. I think we'll be sticking to a similar forward line structure height-wise. It"s basically CCJ for Lynch and Bolton for Rioli. The one advantage now is we have genuine backup ruckmen for Nanks.

Caddy might play wing but I think he’s far better suited to a forward pocket

Pushing some time for Chols return and not for the first time, a little nervous about what happens next.

Like that he has been playing 1st ruck in the vfl and that X has clearly imposed direction to him about follow up play and putting himself in every possible contest.
Nank loves to ruck but hope Cholly also gets his chance to take on O’Brien and Frampton. Both are bigger and heavier, but tipping Cholly will finally have a match winning day.

Indeed Celebrant.

The key question for Dimma and co is this: how many runners can we sacrifice to the aerial gods without losing our overall pressure?

And if pressure must be lost, can we apply pressure in a more easily defendable part of the ground?

Yes. And he reads the play so well, and has such good hands.

Personally, I can't wait to see how Dimma plans to combine - throughout the entire match and across the full length of the ground - the various talents of Nank, Chol and King Kebab.

Like the changes but really hope that Caddy plays fwd. And yes I clan see he is probably there to replace Picket on the wing but he is such a dangerous fwd and much much better at it...

I really can't see Caddy as a winger, forward ok, but winger, no.

So, what we need is someone on the wing. I don't think Chol has the tank but he's pretty good at ground level. Maybe Castagna?

I would like to see Reiwoldt forward with either Chol or CCJ when they are not rucking, when Nank is not rucking and also not on the bench for a rest he can go back.

Bit taller gives us a number of options, will be good to see how well we can utilise this.

DS
Like Castagna on the wing. Next to Balta and Bolton he is probably our quickest. A natural at the chaos kick and likely to have less to worry about in regard to set shots!

Good point. In fact, all that counts ultimately is fast, effective ball movement.

During bad patches of play in our losses to Dees, Lions, Cats, we were sliced open by fast, effective ball movement. Part of that relates to leg speed, but much of it doesn't.

Some people bang on about Caddy being too slow. Yes, his slower leg speed is relevant at times, but the silmple question is this: can he be given a role that plays to his strengths, and where that role contributes to fast, effective ball movement?

Nank will drop back more than usual.

I believe Chol will be used as a fast, leading tall between the arcs, as well as doing some ruck work.

My dream is that Chol develops into a freakish tall utility we can use to create an instant mismatch anywhere between FF and D50.

Problem is midfield are coming back from injury. Might take a little while for Prestia, Cotchin to hit their straps. Adelaide did just beat ladder leaders Melbourne for their only loss of the season and beat Geelong round 1. They're a young side so consistency is an issue but I'm not marking this down as a gimme. Definite danger game imo.

Prestia in particular is always very rusty when coming back from injury.

Pressure is not rewarded anymore
The holding the ball frees we would get are gone as umps allow the player with the ball an eternity to dispose of it Even if they don’t It’s a ball up
We need as a team to win the contested ball and take the tackler on just like other teams do this season

And there it is.

Looks very much like we’re gunning for first use.

This will benefit us against the weaker sides and help boost %

We will probably look to revert to our standard pressure game come September though. We know it works in finals but teams have become too aggressive against our tactics in the home and away.

Touché. Hence Astbury's "replacement" is not like for like. We also have Baker the multi tool. I've also noticed a bit of a revolving door with our key players. The timing of Lynch and Astbury going out at this time doesn't seem totally unplanned.

Disagree, what are you smoking?

Big difference in structural approach.

Marking forwards x 5 (Caddy, CJ, Chol, Riewoldt, Martin) rotating through there and a defensive forward dropped.
Chill man.

I just said the structure might not be that different. We've gone the same number of talls and smalls, and players that could play like for like (and have previously).

You've listed 5 'marking' forwards. Which I personally would love to see. But it's possible only two of them actually play as marking forwards, and likely at least two of them don't.

Martin will split his time, one or both of Chol and CCJ will play ruck and backline, Caddy has been playing pure mid in the VFL and is a premiership wing man.

I'm just saying it would be a big departure for Hardwick to play more than two tall forwards, and the ins don't mean he will.
