welp.
I hadn't heard of this before! Perhaps because I was born a month after it happened. Thanks for posting.

Is this a reason to have a bit of warmth to Carlton (at least while they are terrible)?

The club has come along way since those dark old days of rattling tins to keep the club afloat

I didn’t go, but my old man bought the video from the club. Legends games hadn’t settled into a comedic faux-footy feel by that stage so I remember thinking that plenty of players were having a bit of a dip. I reckon KB showed a few tricks, from memory. I’m pretty sure the old boy’s still got that old VHS.

The only game I’ve been to in person at windy hill, and it didn’t involve the druggies :))
The only thing I can really remember about the game was Rex hunts commentary that was broadcast over the speakers. That was back when he was entertaining :)
One line that stuck in my head for some reason was “ vin Waite the dirty dog”

It was good of them ... and most who played for both sides were from the late 60s to early 80s era when we were the fiercest of rivals. And as said some of the boys still had the white line fever.

My whole family went. My mate's dad (and my dad's mate) Bryan Quirk played for the Blues, but tore his hammy with his first kick. Ah, we laughed.

The ground was packed, from memory.

I think I've heard somewhere he got a start in radio off the back of that game, or maybe changed his style to include the names etc?
I was at the game, and it started with no commentary but then Rex grabbed the mic about halfway through the first qtr. It was bloody funny, had the crowd and players in fits. I can remember KB streaming through the middle and Rex said something about him and he virtually had to stop he was laughing so much. On KB, hadn't lost any pace after being retired for 7 years. Could have still been playing. Pretty sure Rex started his media career on the back of that game.

Don’t think so, Rex starting doing phantom calls into a tape recorder when he was playing for Sandringham, to give to the radio stations to show his style. He then commenced calling VFA games for ch 10 in 1982.

I was there on the day great day.

Best Day I ever had at Windy Hill lol buts it not hard to remember a good day out there as we didnt have too many!!!

Oh I was there the day we upset them in 1991 with Andy Goodwin playing a big game and Andrew Underwood playing his best game against his former side from memory.

So two good days there that I remember.

Nico - I have a very similar memory of that game too .... only time I ever went to Windy Hill also. Had never heard Rex Hunt call a game before, but it was funny as - I also recall that he had the whole crowd in stitches .... I remember smiling all the way home after that.

Being from the country and a young lad during the 70s and 80s, I had only vague memories of travelling on the train with my Dad to see some of our Legends of the time ... So watching the greats run around one last time was a great day -- even if I was nervous as hell feeling unsafe travelling on public transport to Windy Hill. The warm tiger crowds made me feel at ease.

Personally I loved the way Rex called the games on radio, sure it was OTT but funny as. I was living outside melbourne in that era though so maybe didn't get the same Rex fatigue as people here did.

I could appreciate the vigour Rex bought to commentating but he fell for the trap of thinking he had to come up with a nickname for every player to the point I had no idea who he was talking about:

"The cranium kicks it to not a well man who's tackled by the gravedigger...."

Very true, it became like a cryptic crossword eventually

I found a box of old vhs tapes the other day & that game just happened to be one of them. There are some interesting old games in the pile, pity I don't have a player to watch them on now.
