This is a critical topic for society.

we see in the coronavirus the incredulity that people have as to why people can form a different view to themselves on vaccination.

At its core are the algorithms social media uses to prioritise and filter certain types of information. Effectively you end up in mirror world unless you actively try to overcome this and think anyone with an opposing view is beyond stupid.

unless these core algorithms are changed - which will need government intervention. - we are going to see more and more of the civil unrest we just saw on the streets of Melbourne.

some knowledgeable folks discussing solutions/ideas here.

Interesting developments this week. Facebook whistleblower revealed Facebook knows has changed life expectancy of teenage girls etc.

Listening to Your Undivided Attention (Bonus — A Whirlwind Week of Whistleblowing)

In seven years of working on the problems of runaway technology, we’ve never experienced a week like this! In this bonus episode of Your Undivided Attention, we recap this whirlwind of a week — from Facebook whistleblower France Haugen going public on 60 Minutes on Sunday, to the massive outage of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp on Monday, to Haugen’s riveting Congressional testimony on Tuesday. We also make some exciting announcements — including our planned episode with Haugen up next, the Yale social media reform panel we’re participating in on Thursday, and a campaign we’re launching to pressure Facebook to make one immediate change.

This week it truly feels like we’re making history — and you’re a part of it.

"I don't give a f... 'cause Twitter isn't a real place." - Dave Chapelle

Very succinctly put.

Yeah, I imagine that's all well and good for our generation. But for today's youth, Social Media is real, and it's *the* place.

There’s a good, not great, doc on Netflix called 15 minutes of Shame about the effects of social media. Monica Lewisnky is a co-producer and co-narrator.

Is it really. Or have a bunch of fringe loonies falsely convinced themselves and others that the wider world and social media are one in the same? And hence, fringe ideas and opinions from quasi-religious cults are falsely portrayed as wider public opinion.

It is real. I didn't appreciate it until I was sent along with a bunch us 40yo+ managers on "Leading Millennials" training. The only real take away for me was how important Social media is for that generation. Talking to a few said Millennials after said training reinforced just how important social media is to them.

Talking about social media, things are a bit strained between me a long, long, long time mate. He is a Trump supporter which had strained things just a little bit, nothing too much. But at a later time he told me that Michelle Obama is really a bloke !! I laughed at him, and told him to get his hand off it, so to speak. That didn't go down too well.

I caught up with another mate and his wife just last week. He asked how my said mate was, I told him what had happened, and his wife went to say something but was stopped by him.
He latter told me that his wife believes that *smile* too, that's two that I know of, how many are there......................................

A form of deluded insanity infecting and deranging the collective societal mind.

That's what they said about Rock 'n Roll
Poor analogy. People who created Rock 'n Roll vehemently disagreed that this was the case.

Whereas people involved in creating social media are now speaking out at how dangerous a rabbit hole it is taking us down. A bit of a "what have we done" moment. Have a look at the documentary, "The Social Dilemma."

For it to hold such importance in people's minds, that the world and social media are synonymous and one in the same looks cult-like to me. Like mozzies to a blue light.

For all the benefits and extra capabilities social media has given society, overall I think the destructive side outweighs the benefits. A net negative societal impact overall.

You seem to have confused me for a supporter of social media. I'm not. It's toxic and detrimental to society as far as I'm concerned.

But you won't fix the problem until you can accept that Social Media is everything to the younger generations. It's as real to them as anything physical they can touch. Just telling them it's not real and they should just stop using it will be as successful as the fuddy-duddies of the day were in stopping Rock 'n Roll.
