How do we know he wants the role? Admittingly i dont watch much AFL news these days due to the atrocious standard, on 360 when Cotchy announced ut, i saw a snippet of Jacks segment and it didnt appear like he was super keen or putting his hand up.

I hope he doesnt want it as personally id prefer a longer term appointment, just my opinion, if he does want it it would be hard not to give it to him for 2022.
He openly said so. I think it was on 360.

I don't really see the point in Cotch handing the captaincy over if it's to another player near retirement for the short term. He may as well do it himself.

On face value that view makes sense.
I'm assuming though that Cotch just feels like he wants to play without the pressure and the distraction. Who knows - it might be rejuvenating for him?

It could make a real difference to his game and if it extends his career while he’s playing great footy - it’s an all round win for Cotch, the team, the new skipper, us …. etc

I share this view.

Did Jack publicly say he wants the role? If so, I’m going to use common sense and assume something about Trent‘s relationship with Dimma.

I'm ok with Jack having the role for a year.

It might revitalise Cotch not having the captaincy burden, and it might also revitalise Jack who IMO would relish the captaincy.

Played a fair whack of the games nursing a PCL injury.

Hence his inability to run or kick and impaired agility.

Looking forward to a fit Chimpa leading the way again savaging opposiiom mids.

This won't be a popular view but that's never stopped me before.

Riewoldt as Captain would be a terrible choice, a backwards move. His biggest weakness has always been putting self before team and that is exactly what this would be.

Before everyone fires up, that's not a criticism as much as a reality about the personality types of a lot of gun players.

The choice should represent a way forward, not a gap year so a champion player on the way out can feel more fulfilled at the end of his career.
Couldn't disagree more. Over our glory years he has been a selfless leader who has sacrificed individual aspects of his game for the good of the team and he has nurtured the careers of several young players.

What's his chances for PCL recovery?
Is he likely to be impaired in 22?

Can’t believe what I’m reading on here.

Is it 2014?

Jack has become a superb leader. Just watch him in between goals - everyone, including Lynch, looks to him for direction, guidance, inspiration.

He is much loved at Punt Rd. He is much loved because he copped very personal criticism at the start of our run (2017). The playing group told him that he talked too much and said too little. He copped it on the chin. He had to. But it would’ve stung.

The way he has selflessly led that forward line, running endless decoys, slapping the ball on when outnumbered, taking huge pack marks and kicking clutch goals just when we when needed, all this has elevated him to the best of elder statesmen as far as the players are concerned.

We are in the window for one more crack. That’s how we recruited, how we’re setting up. You can bet it’s the *narrative* from Dimma, a story that’s been set up already.

What better captain for one more crack than Mr Heart and Soul himself.

Like another poster said, it could release both Cotch and Jack in what could be their last years.

Jack would make a superb captain. For one last shot.

Then we turn to Grimes or Vlastuin.

I'd expect he'll be fine dell.

He damaged it in a game from memory when he was crashed into quite heavily it mightve been against the Gee Whiz I cant remember.

Zero Hanger has likened Hobbs to Trent Cotchin but when you look at Hobb's weaknesses it is hard to draw comparisons.

Kicking (field kicking) and speed are two of Trents key abilities, they are Hobb's weaknesses

So if Cotchin spends less time in the midfield, where are his other minutes? He’s a shocking kick for goal IMO and too slow off half back. Or maybe just turns into less time on ground.

Field kicking is no longer a strength of the chimps. He's probably one of our worst of the mids.

Imagine seeing Cotch dropped during the season? It's almost impossible to obviously but last year he definitely showed signs of decline & the Captaincy won't be there as security.
Whilst obviously we want him to have the fairy tale exit, it's really important that our young mids see minutes as part of our development, so if it were to eventuate so be it. Hopefully he has a great year & it doesn't happen. Ideally goes out hitting the finish-line hard with another flag.
