Chimpas so called drop off or decline last season can be heavily attributed to the knee PCL injury that came to light a few weekas ago that he most likely received against the Gee Whiz in our Rnd 9 game ensuing from a knee to knee collision when he was on the ground.

He got up hobbling, missed the following week against the Bears in that *smile* show at the Gabba.

That issue he carried for the rest of the season along with a hamstring niggle.

People forget our Champion Skipper playing some good footy early doors in some games especially the win against the Dogs a week or two prior.

Calm the farm people.

Think you're overstating his start to the year tbh Craigo. I had concerns early in the year that Cotch didn’t look like himself. Like many others no doubt he’d have been disappointed with how his season panned out. Agree that injury hampered him. It happens with older players.
Here’s hoping Cotch bounces back this season.

If Cotchy's not up to it, no one will have to tap him on the shoulder.
He's been a wonderful player and captain. No doubt a legend of our club, to be lauded for that.

But to me, he was already near the end in 2020, and looked cooked all year in 2021.
Injuries or not this year, I think he just made it through 2020. One of his best moves on GF day was the accidental shoulder injury Ablett got from the clash with Trent.

While I agree with you Spook - and others - that he'll know when to step away by himself (I do believe he is smart enough to know that and he deserves the right to choose it himself), the one thing that is very clear with his and his wife's social media, is they clearly love the good life and all the best possessions.

To be honest, I find them both almost obscene how much they promote stuff for the freebies she gets and how much she seems to covet everything. I'm not a fan of their social media at all. Personally, its diminished Trent in my eyes. Yes, I know its a generational thing, but it personally irritates me with him and her especially. I dont think the Club will miss Mrs cotchin at all.

Point of all this ramble is that even though I'm sure he'll have a lucrative career in the family building business, its prob still hard to forfeit a great playing contract salary when you are a massive accumulator of all the best possessions, even at their still young ages.

Dont take this personally,

But everyone pensioning off our great Capt.

Can get *smile*.

2-3 more years in him. GAJ played the middle 200 games with 3 blokes sandwiching him every contest, and went till 36.

Cotchy will do 2022 as normal - in the guts, winning premierships; 2023 he'll move to a statesman role, maybe a wing or HFF; 2024 He'll do a Richo and almost win the Brownlow.

Cotchin my Cotchin

The end is nigh, but I think he still has a couple more twists in his career to come yet - I reckon he and Jack are gearing up for one last almighty push in 2022 and then I can see them both calling time.

All good things come to an end and Cotchin won‘t hang around - the first step was handing over the captaincy and one last year sounds about right to me.

Personally, I half expected him to pull down the curtain this year.

This will be his last year. Hopefully injury free but that's unlikely.

Yeah. I think we owe it to Trent to let him feel the pure joy of running up to the podium to join Dimma and the Capt as they lift the 2022 Premiership Cup. It's something he hasn't had a chance to experience yet.

Correct mate. He's only 31, not 34.

A full Two years younger than Duckwood and same age (2 days apart) as Dangerfield (who no-one seems to want to retire) people even on here seem to forget.

This won't be a popular view but that's never stopped me before.

Riewoldt as Captain would be a terrible choice, a backwards move. His biggest weakness has always been putting self before team and that is exactly what this would be.

Before everyone fires up, that's not a criticism as much as a reality about the personality types of a lot of gun players.

The choice should represent a way forward, not a gap year so a champion player on the way out can feel more fulfilled at the end of his career.

Great call, can't disagree.

It's madness to talk about Cotchin as an old man compared to Dangerduck.

Less head hits, too.

Calendar age is irrelevant in a hard running collision sport like Aussie rules. If the bodies cooked, it's cooked regardless of being 27y.o. or 37y.o.

Not suggesting the Cotch is cooked as yet n modern rehab, recovery n fitness systems are fairly premium these days. We had a fair bunch of players struggled to play out the season at their usual performance levels, hopefully they were just carrying a collective bunch of injury niggles compounded by our massive campaign over the last five seasons. Full off season break n a proper pre season preparation will soon show whether a few are cooked or not.
