I like your thinking, T-Man.
They've been my thoughts for a while.
If we thought Balta was pretty good as a backman in a premiership team then wait until he's moved forward and helps the Tigers to a couple more flags.
Wasn’t moving Balta forward one of the things that helped to turn the 2020 GF our way?

If Marlion Pickett is indeed our 23rd man,

mortgage your farm and take the 10's on the tigers for the flag.

I reckon Marlion would be in the running for PRE's biggest blind spot ever.

I think its Covid related.

Are the Tigers only 10's for the GF,l was hoping for a bit more than that.

The only reason I didn't have Pickett in my team was I think Dimma only wants the 1 defensive winger now, we need 1 to get more involved which is why I had Hugo in but it was line ball with Pickett as we don't have many high possession wingmen. It was lineball which I went with but thought I would go with the better kick, defensively Pickett is awesome, but think we will go with 1 wingman thats defensive (which is Kmac ahead of Pickett) and then a better kick on the opposite wing.

Clarke couldn’t have spelt it out any clearer during the draft.
Foot skills are now at a premium.
Players particularly under the pump are Pickett, Castagna and one of my favourites in McKintosh.
Reckon they will eventually be phased out by the upcoming youngsters who can regularly hit a target

if we dont need Pickett in the wing, he'll go in the middle.

not directed at you, but It confounds me how the 2 narratives

1. we have no inside mids and
2. Pickett is 23rd man

run in parallel.

Picketts debut was as an inside mid, and he was amongst the best.

Hes an inside mid, whose been forced to play on the wing, because of our inside mid depth.

He has a huge motor, hes quick, hes tough, he finds the ball. Yes his i50's can be erratic, but thats OK.

maybe.

but I think with every single footballer, if you have enough elite qualities, your flaws are accepted.

I would say Pickett would be the last in line to be superseded of those 3.

he strikes fear in the hearts of the opposition and that quality is very, very rare.

you get hit by marlion, your sentenced to a week in an icebath, at best.

elite qualities: endurance, closing speed, aggression/competitiveness (they call these 'weapons' in clubland these days, like it a game of D&D)

weakness: kicking

Marlion seemed to be on the outer last year with the match committee and wasn’t selected in the 1sts on occasion even though fit. Can only surmise that they’re frustrated by his ability to consistently turn the ball over, sometimes under no relative pressure.
I have him as the sub because I see him as an impact player. Bring him on in the last and let him cause havoc.
All three players I mentioned have unique qualities. The day we replace all three is when we are in a very good position list wise.

I'd love to see him have a run of games attending 80% of centre bounces, with a licence to pirouette, and maim

Following the introduction of the stand rule I think KMac has a lot of work to do on his disposal before he again becomes an automatic selection.
Aarts, Caddy and George will also struggle to get games.
Dow, Martyn and Parker are also undone.

The more I think about our list the more I like it, especially with the drafting of Gibcus, he gives us some options.

With his leap Gibcus could be another Luke Jackson. Jackson rucked the last 15/20 minutes of the 3rd quarter in the GF, he was giving his midfielders first use and it turned the game.

Gibcus into the ruck against a tiring ruckman or a second stringer jamming the ball down Sonsie and RCD's throats with the 666 is is an enticing proposition.

So there you have it, in 24 hours I've gone from Balta to the forward line, to Gibcus a ruck/forward. Like I said, he gives us some options. Roll on 2022.

the Gibcus/Balta combo could become the footballing equivalent of a double barrel pump action shotgun, that discharges and chambers both barrels simultaneously.

I love it eZyt, we'll call it the Shotgun Boogie, they're sure to be hit, but they'll "only need one shot"

The 2nd & 3rd verses are well worth a listen.

So - we draft for 5 years hence. Let's take a squiz at what that might look like. But compromising a little - let's make it 3 years out (of course, for some on this list it'll be their 5 th + year):

2024

BROAD MILLER VLAUS

BROWN GIBCUS RIOLI

RALPHO TARANTO DOW

BOLTON BALTA STACK

MARTIN LYNCH MUJO

SOLDO RCD SONSIE

BAKER CLARKE GRAHAM RYAN

That looks like a premiership team to me - with only a few long punts: Miller making a decent FB and getting Taranto as a free agent.

I'm sure you'll remember people saying George and Kamdyn will be phased out of the side since the 2017 post-season. Everyone gets phased out eventually, but will these guys be phased out because kicking has become a premium?

The kicking quality of this crop could be by design. Maybe we are shifting to a more controlled game plan? We did trial one this year.

It could also just reflect a strong draft hand. A welcome bonus that we didn't need to compromise on like we usually would.

We still drafted for all the other typical Richmond traits, so I'm inclined to assume our recruiting this year doesn't represent a shift in thinking about how we will play in the near future. We can't know for sure either way, because we never needed to compromise on kicking or Richmond traits at our picks this year. We got both. Lucky us!

One question I'd like to put forward is:

Can kicking ever be considered a premium when you play fast?

The reason I think it can't is because unlike Geelong's controlled approach that relies on precision kicking through a stable defence, fast play relies on turning it over to quickly get it in before the opposition's defence is ready, so there's more space available, and their defensive systems are in chaos.

The faster you move, the faster you pull the trigger, the more space available... so more room for error.

The slower you move, the slower you pull the trigger, the less space available... so there's less room for error. (Kicking premium)

I'm very happy to draft quality kicks, but we could've drafted even better kicks if we really wanted to and we chose not to.

From that line of thinking, I'd say we're doubling down on what we already do, but using better kicks to replace to rookies and late picks we've done it with before.

I still see us playing a fast, instinctive brand that has a place for players like George, Pickett, and Kamdyn, who still bring a lot of important qualities to the table, especially in finals. Grand Finals. Big contests. At this stage, I don't see kicking as a premium at Richmond with role players being phased out because of it, but I am biased, so I'll probably find any way to defend these guys lol.

I don't think KMac is that bad a kick. Reckon he's a great kick on the run, doesn't have the creativity to kick around his body ala Dusty, but he's pretty neat.
