Who really cares? Rich guys racing toys for kicks.

Assume Hamilton is the best driver but how would they all go if they had a shot in the same car?

5 Pages in 12 1/2 years shows how much interest there really is from the average sports punter.

It’s the off season and this thread was top of the pops. There is obviously nuance to the sport that engages the serious fan. But it strikes me about as competitive as the Premier League where 95 plus % of the entrants cannot win the title and the one with the most money gets the prize most of the time. Does F1 throw up a Leicester City style championship upset?

Personally I think there is better competition watching the snooker or the darts.

By the sounds, reckon you’re secretly one of the 2 billion viewers that tunes into F1 every year.

Not as exciting as the 62 pages of the enthralling Chris Yarran thread, I will grant you that though.

Sunday night at 10.00pm not a great time for sports viewing for those that work. Or perhaps I'm just jealous of the billionaires and their flash toys.

About 30 years ago an amazing invention called “record” was created.

Give it a go. It’s fantastic !

And play it at 6x speed so they go even faster!
See… now you’re hooked. I reckon you should follow the McLaren team. You like Rickie - he wears orange and McLaren have an orange livery. Plus an Australian drives for them.

Knew you were convertible.

Convertibles, now you're talking. Race them with the top down and a grid girl in the front seat.

I watch a bit of FI but I must admit that this year I have been put off it by the fact it was a battle between two of the most unlikable drivers. Verstappen is basically a petulant child who happens to drive fast. His whining last week that he was treated differently to other drivers by the Stewards was a sign of this but I wonder in the end whether it had some effect on what happened last weekend.
I still watch it from time to time but these days I prefer the Moto GP which has much more competitive racing

Two of the more likeable drivers are Norris and Ricciardo. Bottas and Checo are ok too.

Still reckon that in a car that suits his driving style, Ricciardo is one of the fastest drivers out there. The way the McLaren needs to be driven is counter to his natural driving style. Would love to see him in a Ferrari but that’s unlikely. Even an Alpha Tauri might suit him better.

It was a few years ago but Ricciardo was very quick in the Red Bull and constantly beat a young Verstappen as his teammate. In the end Red Bull decided Verstappen was their future and egos like his cannot have really fast drivers as teammates.

Verstappen was still learning which direction the pointy end was supposed to be facing when he was alongside Ricciardo at Red Bull.
Red Bull obviously tickled the right ego while nice guys go round in ever decreasing circles.

But harsh on Danny Ric. He was very good in the red bull, outperformed a world champion in Vettel and then a young Verstappen.
I am not saying they backed the wrong man in Verstappen, clearly they didn’t. What I am saying is that Ricciardo would be a lot closer to Verstappen’s performance in the car than the guys they have had since. But drivers like Verstappen, Hamilton and many others before them like to have team mates who they are clearly much better than.
Once it was clear Red Bull were backing Verstappen then Ricciardo had no real choice but to leave

Wasn't intending to bag out Ricciardo, he's always been a very very good driver, perhaps lacked that razor thin edge of ruthless racing *smile* required to be at the very top. Senna, Shuey, Vettel, Hamilton, there's always been plenty of very very good drivers at F1 snapping at the tails of the monsters.
Being able to bring a mountain of cash along to the team never hurts a drivers chances of getting into the best teams either. Something that's made it difficult for Aussie drivers since Jones was last in a seat. Even young Piastri couldn't get first billing promotion after his seasons at F3, F2. Some other young up n comer with a mountain of cash n half the ability got a promotion ahead of him.

Yeah it’s a shame about Piastri and just shows how money rules F1. The one who got the drive is Chinese and having a Chinese driver in F1 is massively important for the finances of the sport but the reigning F2 champion drives practice laps all year because he is automatically banned from competing in F2 as the champion.

Piastri has the 3rd drivers seat at Alpine Renault. Alonso is 40yo. I reckon we might see Piastri on the grid at least once in 2022.
