Might be a bit late in the day but two pods about the Holmes trial have been superb - Bad Blood (subscription) and The Dropout (free).

Also, Fat Leonard is pretty good.

I'm following the Dropout too. Might be a couple more eps to come yet. Extraordinary story really. I don't get how they could possibly track returns for the investors anyway if the product had worked and been a success. Each new investment of $100m would severely downgrade the value o the previous investments.

Reminds me of the WeWork story which is also a good podcast and story. I'll check out the other two as well.

Listened to The Sydney siege series about the Lindt Cafe tragedy. Some extraordinary braveness.

Bad Blood - the Final Chapter - about Elizabeth Holmes and the whole Theranos investor blood diagnostics scam, pretty good. She went from a wealthy family background to Stamford dropout to 4 billion dollar CEO to nothing, and might be going to prison for 20 years.

I've been listening to The Dropout. Crazy story. I'm still not convinced she's going to gaol yet.

The fine line between cutting edge innovation & flat out fraud.
I mentioned this earlier but how did the investors hope to make money? They would just blow through multi-millions and then head out and raise more multi-millions, each time severely reducing the value of the previous investments.

I think she might get off too. Although the defence seems to having nothing to do with defending her actually defrauding heaps of people, including blaming the investors for not doing enough due-diligence and you just know her legal team told her to go out and get married and have a child.

yeah apparently case is nearly done - will be amazing if she gets off but you can see it happening.
This is like a 10 year old going for a joyride in a Lamborghini. How the hell was she able to start the company in the first place?

It's interesting that those who invested were old money families, and funds/investors that didn't know much about medical diagnostics. Big Pharma and the military dropped her pretty quickly when they saw she really had nothing. Combination of ignorance about the industry, the lure of massive returns a la software, and a lack of due diligence.

Her claims about the technology were massive - if it was real it would have totally disrupted the industry. But they had nothing and it took investors ten years to work that out.

she was charismatic and had a good idea. She also got some heavy hitters on board early, a prof from Stamford was one. They raised 6.9 mill in funding in their second year based on nothing but concepts. I think investors saw it like a dot.com, it was a great idea that was scalable was magic and wouldn't be subject to FDA regs somehow.

In a previous job I worked on a diagnostic device for a Melbourne based tech company - the amount of work we put into testing, quality and dealing with complying with the FDA regs and testing protocols (because we sold into the American market) was amazing.

Stanford. I suppose her dad being a (failed) businessman played part in helping her.

Have flowed this incredible story from the time of the book and the podcasts and through the trial.

It boggles the mind how she/Theranos managed to get where they did with all the lies and distortions and billions of dollars etc etc
What a blatant shyster she was/is and obviously she should be found guilty and be sentenced to a (typically USA style) long stretch in the clink - personally I’d make it at least 30 years.

But like you and others - I’m still a bit worried too that she’ll get off.

The defence just needs to convince a couple of jurors that she was under the control of Balwani and she'll get off. It doesn't matter that she clearly had a strong personality and lied for years and years to investors.

It would bloody outrageous if she got off - but that is definitely the fear
