Happy Birthday Balmey.

Keep forgetting he was a Melb coach everytime I watch those old 90s games on Fox Footy.
YEP HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BOSS BALMEY !!!

The Catalyst Behind The Rejuvenation of The RFC I Have No Doubt.

Without Balme coming to the club I doubt we would have 17,19 and 20 in the cabinet to be honest.

Thanks Ed you pillock ...........going for Grubby and short shifting Balmey handing him to us .... Great work by the Chief Benny to get Him Across Pronto.

Watched the GFs from 72 to 74 recently. Balme rucked a lot of the 74 granny played very well.

Balmey celebrating after 1973 Grand Final with a Melbourne Bitter depth charge.
Barry Richardson looking on he missed the game due to injury.
Thanks to Rob Rider for the picture posted on Facebook World of Sport Ch7 TV Show page.

A lot of the talk is about what Balmey did post footy and also when people talk about his footy career those famous incidents get brought up. The reality is that as well as those things he was a really good footballer.

When we talk about the 1973 flag a lot is said about the courage of Royce Hart coming on at halftime in the prelim and inspiring a come back and that is absolutely true. But Balme kicked 5 that day and was awesome, his goal just before halftime was very important, it was like Dusty's in the 2020 grannie because it gave us a sniff and belief.

Balme the footballer is often underrated imo

Yeah very poignant pic showing the agony and the ecstasy

Bones spoke about how he felt seeing his mates win the flag without him (on a Mike Sheehan show I think It was)

Fortunately both players shared the joy the next year.

Balmey and Bones were very versatile players.
Balmey could play forward or in the ruck, and Bones could play forward or back. He kicked 5 goals in our 74 GF win, and was the the first player keep champion full forward Peter Hudson goalless in a game.

Great contribution aside, I hate to see anyone still working at Balme's age.

There is so much more out there to be enjoyed.
Yeah, I hope he finds retirement soon, slows down, enjoys things or if this keeps him happy, so be it.

Is he full time? 9-5?

Probably find it's a labour of love TBR, just like it is for Wayne Bennett who's still coaching in the NRL, and he's got a couple of years on Balmey.

Work-life balance is important, but more than anyone, I'd say Balme is a Yoda when it comes to keeping things in perspective.

Flexible work arrangements to accommodate valuable mature workers are the way of the future, and beyond a salary, there's health benefits to keeping the mind sharp, mentoring, and maintaining strong social connections... assuming the work isn't all-consuming.

Richmond is a trustworthy club to get that balance right. In general, we'll see more and more people working longer in flexible roles, and it seems we've figured out a good balance with Balme that gets revisited and discussed yearly, allowing both parties to adapt the arrangement as necessary.

Agreed there. Some people are so immersed in what they do that they don’t want to give it up. They’d be miserable without it.

How does the old saying go? Show me a man who loves his work and I'll show you a man who never works a day in his life, or something like that.

Pretty sure Balmey eased back his work load recently n I'd be damn near absolutely certain he sneaks off for a spell every now n again.

Exactly, I hope I'm still dispensing wisdom on a part-time yet well renumerated basis for as long as I can.

Yeah, but I seriously doubt he's expected to sit at a desk from 9-5.
