You're not going to draft a true A grader when you're first pick is around the 20 mark, often. You may get one eventually, but they'll almost all have a deficiency in one way or another.
I don't think that's being Mr Darkside. It's more Mr Reality side.
Bolton was pick 29.

And how many other A graders have been taken since? You'll note I said often, not never.
I'd also argue Bolton isn't A grade yet. He has the talent. But goes missing too often to be genuine A Grader yet.

Though more A graders can be found in the top 10, there’s been plenty of A graders found outside of that .

Rance pick 18
Shane Edwards pick 26
Noah Balta mid 20's pick

I could go on.

The proportion of picks taken from 18-20 and beyond versus the number of A graders found is heavily skewed.
Yeah there's elite, not just A grade, players who started off being rookies too. I can find them quite quickly. You're being disingenuous.
The point is, you can build many premiership quality lists, if you're taking picks in the very late teens, early 20s, year on year. That's the entire purpose of the draft, to level the competition out.
Even if you do find someone with elite or a grade qualities, they're also going to come with some deficiencies as well. I'd they didn't have them, they'd go higher in the draft.
Players like RCD and Ross are going to be what we have to work with. That'll be the case until we can get into the upper echelon of picks, we land a super draft (in which case, lots of clubs get that talent and you struggle to close the gap) or we rely on someone else making a mistake and a player "slips through".

Stocker or CD?
Both cancel each other out.
Stocker looked like a kid forced to play in defence and cD has never chased or tried to defend in his junior days.
I can't see anything special with Cd
Dow, Ralph and Mansell look better prospects long term.

I think 2022 is crucial for RCD, the recruiting team said he was a long term prospect and his development has been severely hampered. Hopefully there is some return to normality next year and we will have a better idea whether he is going to make it or not. All those young prospects deserve more time due to the circumstances.

Disagree. I think he can be trained and learn to get the two way running game.

I didn't say he can't be trained or taught.
with all the stop start to the last 2 seasons no wonder they haven't taught him that defending is part of the game.
He looks and plays like a pick 20. Shows talent but has alot of holes in his game

Disruptions over the last 2 seasons has probably impacted RCD's development more than any other of our juniors. AFL traits but poor endurance when he came to the club. Needed multiple strong preseasons to build tank required for playing mid in the AFL. Really want to see some progress this off season.

To say this is an important season for Riley is one thing but it's also important for our club. He's exactly the type we need to come through in the midfield.
Last season showed some great glimpses but this year will be asked to carry more of the load. Come on young fella time to mix it with the big boys.

Hopefully he has developed some muscle and strength in the shoulders and arms - thought he looked a bit weak in the upper body at times.

Make or break year.
