yeah, this person was eaten.

hell of a way to go.

Im fully expecting Morrison and Dutton to call Albonese a shark lover this week.

Albonese could wedge them with a bowl of shark fin soup?
The only thing one could hope if found in that position is that you weren’t conscious of what was happening for long. However it sounds from witnesses that the man did cry out for a bit. So it suggests that there sadly was a level of consciousness.

I reckon he essentially got bitten in half and swallowed in 2 gulps so, while far from ideal, i dont reckon hed have felt too much???

there's some very confronting phone footage taken from about 20m away.

its a graphic reminder,

that we are lumps of meat.
Have seen the footage you were talking about now. But only censored versions of it. It’s blurred out. But looks as if what they captured in the footage is the shark coming back for second and third mouthfuls.

*smile* me, pretty grim being one of the witnesses! Although one bloke in the footage continues fishing.

Unbelievable that someone’s first instinct while witnessing a shark attack would be to pull out there phone and film it. Humans are more *smile* than ever before.
RIP to the swimmer and thoughts go out to the family.

I spose humans cope with trauma in very strange and varied ways,

But yeah, fisherman seems intent on catching a trevally,

While a bloke gets eaten???

Sharks gunna shark.
Yep.
If I'm gunna go n pee in his ocean I got no right to complain if he has me for lunch.
If he's gunna come n drink in my pub, then I'm up for a feed of flake n chips.

Maybe he thought it would bring more fish? Which in theory would probably be correct.

It's hard to judge anyone when they are in shock, which you would have to imagine they all were witnessing what happened.

Wearing a wetsuit while surfing is dangerous enough, swimming in one is asking for trouble.

100%,

I was shocked watching footage.

quite unimaginable watching from 20m away.

the feeling of helplessness would be overwhelming - there was absolutely nothing to be done.

I've seen the blurred video. That was enough for me not to bother hunting down the unedited one.

I watched it largely accidentally. sent to me by a teenager with no indication of what it was.

I'd never have gone looking for it, but I'd be lying if I said watching a human being eaten, no matter how morally wrong, unethical, and disturbing

wasnt compelling.

there is something very primal, life affirming even, in a graphic reminder that we are still occasional participants beyond the apex of the food chain.

not very life affirming for the poor bloke on his swim, obviously.

Don't feel good about viewing it. can't really comprehend filming it. didn't share it. deleted it.

heard a shrink saying millennials FIRST response in a crisis is to reach for their phone camera, not 000 (not that 000 would have achieved anything in this instance, and I guess the footage will be used by coroner and researchers?)

But, If you're involved in a public crisis, hope the by-standers are from the 20th century.

To be fair you'd feel bloody helpless. Extremely traumatising for anyone who witnessed that. Who knows how you;d deal with it until put in that situation.

They'll no doubt hunt this shark down in NSW until it or another shark is caught as a trophy over the next week.
Meanwhile another 15 people died of covid yesterday in NSW & we barely bat an eyelid.

I must admit, I rewatched with headphones in, so I could hear a lot more clearly the background noises of reactions beyond the bloke filming it. A lot of people crying out, "What the *smile*!" "Oh my god" etc. But one of the cries that sounded a blood curdling faintly in the background, I am wondering if it was the last screams of the swimmer, before the shark grabbed him for it's second or third mouthful.

* graphic warning dont read further if you dont like descriptions of real violent death *

It appeared like half a person screaming

Im a farmer, so birth and death are part of my job.

And its very common for some final dramatic life,

In dead things. adrenaline is a very powerful hormone.

Ive been struck-at several times by headless snakes, heard dead cows bellow, and of course, seen headless chooks not so much run around, as fly/flop quite a distance very awkwardly.

Again, laying myself bare,

Im really torn discussing this.

Part of me thinks its macabre, disrespectful, perverse, voyeurism

And part of me thinks it healthy to regard humans as the meat and bone that we are

Thoughtful post. The part that worries me is my 12 and 13 year old getting it on a text and watching it. I am going to discuss it with them, I'm sure it will be getting forwarded through the school network. I'll ask them not to watch it but only they will control that.

Both my kids wear wetsuits when surfing, not sure if they would want to enter the water again if they saw that footage.

I watched it, I think some ppl are desensitised to gruesome footage. Do ppl think that they're never going to experience it in real life, so video is the closest thing?

I saw a snake during a hike on Thursday and tried to get my phone out to film it.
