It’s unreal in the US. In many states they see speed cameras, speed guns, booze buses, helmets etc as an infringement on their civil liberties.

True story. About 5 years ago I was in Charleston South Carolina with some American friends who were from Atlanta but had lived in Charleston for years prior.

My buddy picked me and my partner up in a big GMC SUV. He had a big esky fixed into the centre of the car and connected to the cigarette lighter socket.

We drove around for hours from one pub to the next and drinking Buds from the esky throughout. I said to him, “so what’s the story with drink driving here ?” He said it’s crazy. There are no booze buses and the cops can’t breathalyser you either unless they have good reason. He said unless you are wandering on the road, speeding etc they can not breathalyse you and even then, you have to fail the sobriety test as well eg walk in a straight line, count backwards etc.

So, basically, he said you can drink as much as you like and only if a cop sees you breaking a law will you get pulled up. So otherwise just drive slow and steady, don’t wander, and you’re fine. Everyone does it in SC he said. That’s the way they do it there.

Unreal.
Crazy country.

Due to their amazing college system , geez it makes the draft a great event , they certainly know how to make it into a blockbusher , even the rookie show on Fox is outstanding

It sure is CC. Great to see our own Aussie Daniel Faalele get drafted to the Ravens as an offensive tackle. The bloke is 203cm and weighs 174kg....the heaviest in the NFL now!!

Great to see my Steelers drafted Kenny Pickett as the new QB, and how's this for excitement when you get drafted:

The AFL could learn from it. The AFL
National Draft is an amateurish, cringeworthy *** show every year.

In saying that though, the NFL Draft goes over the top at times. All the endless yelling and screaming (mostly over nothing), bizarre stage presenters, corny entertainment (eg Chris Angel)… it can get annoying.

Talk of a LA Rams v Dallas Cowboys match in Sydney 2024.

August is the proposed time of year so seemingly a pre-season game, but its a start to getting games down here on a hopefully regular basis.

Two high profile teams. Interesting.

I’m scheduled to be in NYC over Christmas/New Year. 19th Dec to 5th Jan. Can’t decide whether I’ll go to a Gi-aints or Jest game. Or maybe neither. Getting to Met Life stadium is a pain in the arse. Maybe just “stick” with the hockey at MSG or over in NJ and basketball at MSG or in Brooklyn.

Hmmm.

Decisions decisions Red....one thing's for sure if either team are traveling poorly it won't be hard to get a ticket that late in the season.

It seems the NFL are really looking to push the game globally.

Each team has been allocated international markets and been told to promote the game in these countries.

The Rams have been handed Australia, Mexico and China.

Reckon the Niners have more cut through in Australia than the Rams. Should have them playing here.

It’s not hard to get tix at Met Life generally. It’s stuck out in a big field in the middle of nowhere, in NJ. Pretty soulless actually. Saw the Jest v Patriots there a few years ago. Not much of an atmosphere to be honest and got boring with all the stoppages. NFL is definitely a TV game.

Sydney.... The Yanks still haven't learnt where the real big crowds are in this country.

Lucky you. Yeah, both NY teams are sh!t and you miss out on going to Buffalo in that period as they play 2 away games.

Wouldn’t mind going to Barclay’s to see the Nets play someone. Celtics v Knicks or Nets would be good.

I've lost touch with the NBA as the Celts were my team, but now would rather go watch any NCAA Football or Basketball game live.

Where do you stay in NYC Red?

Just found out a few days ago I have Masters tickets again for next year, looking to add New York on afterwards.

Eyeing off a property overlooking Central Park but geez its expensive compared to most others.

Ah. Great great question Donald. I love talking about this sort of stuff.

We stay at the Hotel Giraffe on Park Avenue South. If you look it up on TripAdvisor you will see that it has been in the top 20 rated hotels for years and years. No mean feat given there’s thousands of hotels in NYC. (Note: be careful with TripAdvisor. Traveler rankings get distorted by new hotels and new and smaller volumes of ratings. Right now Hotel Giraffe is ranked 17, but in all reality looking at it, it’s about 10 because of the aforementioned.)

Yes, hotels in NYC are expensive. But Hotel Giraffe is quite reasonable I reckon. For the coming Christmas trip we’ve booked the same King Suite that we had on our last trip in 2019 before the world went into disarray. It has a separate closed off bedroom from the living area and is a little larger than the other standard rooms. NYC rooms aren’t big by general standards but our room in 2019 was ample for me and the missus and all our luggage and stuff. We've had friends follow our recommendation and stay in a non-suite and they loved it as well.

Heaps of great things about Hotel Giraffe. It’s a smaller relatively modern boutique hotel without all the impersonal attitude etc. of a large hotel. Very very clean. Good staff. Quiet as quiet goes in NYC.

Free continental breakfast each morning, free wine and cheese hour in the afternoon, free snacks etc. Great location – you’re right on the Green 6 line. Short walk to Madison Square Park (not to be confused with MSG), Flatiron Building, thousands of bars and restaurants including the famous Pete’s Tavern and Old Town Saloon Bar and so much more. You can walk to Grammercy Park, the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller, Greenwich Village, West Village….heaps of places. Extraordinary convenient. Some people make the mistake of staying near Times Square which is ok, but very touristy, crowded, noisy etc. You can still walk 20 mins to Times Square from Hotel Giraffe anyway.

They usually have deals for multiple nights. Check them out. The photos on their website are 100% realistic.

Awesome info Red, thanks for that.

Certainly looks a nice property, and the inclusions aren't something you usually see.

I too enjoy talking travel, Africa and Europe are the places I have greater knowledge on though compared to the US.

Buy yourself a 1 week Metro Card and knock yourself out. Takes you anywhere-everywhere (including Staten Island but not NJ if you wanna go over there.)

With Deshaun Watson joining them the Browns have, quite wisely, sought proper protection should it all go wrong.
