Time for the official thread.

Scotland lost to Ukraine 3-1 at Hampden Park overnight, watched the second half. Ukraine scored twice in the first (I think), running on adrenaline. Scotland dominated the last half hour, missing a multitude of chances but finally nailing one but then conceding a late counter attack goal in the last seconds of injury time.

Sad for the Scots, Ukraine go on to play Wales for the second last place in the Cup on the weekend. I would have liked to see all three of these teams qualify, but it is what it is.

Socceroos won an entertaining friendly against Jordan 2:1, nice headed goal from a free kick and a nice goalmoath finish from Awer Mabil. Jordan scored first with a cracking team goal, break down the right flank, series of one touchs before a left footed rocket from outside the area. One positive from Rogic pulling out of the squad is Arnie can't play both him and Mooy in the same team, as that would make us sooo slow. The squad last night was at least young and quick. I feel we'll get over the UAE but then Peru is another story.

Apparently Mooy is putting his $180K per week !!! contract in China at risk because he didn't go back last month to try to avoid catching covid or getting locked down.

Winner of Peru - Aus/UAE will be the last team to qualify for this cup.

What's the go with our qualifying path Angry?

Home/Away? Think read somewhere of a one off game.

Another useless performance by Scotland.

Will send Steve Clarke another email.

Is it just a perception I have by only seeing fleeting glances in recent years of the Scottish team. Or do they disproportionately choke spectacularly at home in crucial games? Particularly when they are expected to win.

Yeah both the UAE qual and the Peru Qual (if we make it) will be in Qatar, both one-off games, will be all over by the 14th of June.

I also forgot the Concacaf/Oceania playoff - NZ vs Costa Rica. Would be embarrassing if our Kiwi cousins make it and we don't

Yep 3 final spots left, but Wales plays at home, so why do the other 5 have to play in Qatar?

Good question, I think it's the deals the confederations did with Qatar as host - I know during the height of covid we played a lot of our games in Qatar. The other two are also intercontinental playoffs - normally these are two legged home and away affairs but deals were done to avoid intercontinental travel during Covid.

Wales/Ukraine are both UEFA nations, they can't play in Ukraine obviously and Wales were ranked higher (better points tally in the group stage). I don't think any UEFA qualifiers were played in Qatar.

The best part of course is Russia finished second in their group but were kicked out. Poland who would have played them got through to the next playoff stage with a walkover where they beat the Swedes 2-0, so you could argue they deserved to qualify even with the Russia walkover.

Thanks Ant. Too many paths for us to go through. Ridiculous, but at least we still have a chance for a spot.

So Ukraine are out, had a bunch of chances against wales but couldn't nail any of them. Wales were patchy, own goal from a defender's header was what got them over the line.

Aust vs UAE Wednesday morning 5am kickoff.

To be fair with the draw they've been given, they may as well not turn up

1-1 after 56 minutes. Aussies could only hold the lead for a few minutes but UAE deserve to be, at least, level, as they've created the better chances from open play.

Gee, we're hard to watch. Worse with each game. Obviously want us to qualify but seems the only way to be rid of Arnold is to lose.

Feel dirty for thinking, let alone expressing this.

That said, Goowin just spurned a glorious chance to regain the lead ...

Irvine scores after 53 minutes, only for the UAE to equalise 3 minutes later. UAE have had more of the ball, time to get Maclaren on.
