Parkin did in 95 I think
Seems you are right.

Kennedy at the Hawks. Believe he won when he also returned.

Also I Bob Rose came back at the Pies without success.

So Lyon has a few in his favour but so do the coaches that came back without success.

Just on this Lyon returning for a ‘second stint’ at coaching their club again, how many has there been?

How many successful? None?

Did Norm Smith return after he was sacked? Think so! No Premiership?

David Parkin. No?

Tony Jewell. Returned. Definitely a No

Ross Lyon. ???????????????????

Have I missed anyone.

Lyon will have to overcome history ?
No success for Barrass when he returned to Melbourne either.

I remember watching a game against freo in the wet at the MCG, maybe 2015/6. It was more like rugby union than afl. We were the better team, and it was a close and low scoring game-but I never thought we were a chance to win. Worst game of footy I ever saw live.
Urgh. I was at that game. Weird weather. Not just wet, sort of misty/foggy.
Even for a wet game it was dour. Got to hand it to Pavlich in that game though. Managed to make a difference in the few times it went near him. The guy was a superstar.

Find that hard that his manager or he agreed to this BR.

Was it a ‘condition’ ‘clause’ that the Saints or the AFL put in place so that he accepted the 2 year extension, in the event he gets ‘sacked’ he wouldn’t get the two years paid out?

How the Coaches Association allowed it or their lack of ‘voice’ is a true indication that the AFL runs St Kilda and that they would have pushed the ‘agenda’ to possibly get Ross ‘the Boss’ Lyon.

To give the saints ‘Relevance’ they need and the AFL desire.
But just on that, if true, what were his options though? Don’t agree then don’t coach or agree in good faith and coach?

After asking around apparently this is becoming a standard clause in coaching contracts and the AFL insist on it if it is a club they are providing additional funding support to. Lyon has it now, Clarkson has it, as does Hinkley and quite a few others.

Any contract is a negotiation though, ultimately you either accept the clause or you refuse and they either change it or you don't get the job.

Thanks BR.

Thought so and hinted to that in another post.

You think Hardwick has it? Doubt it?

So in part what you are saying that the AFL pushed, as they did with Ross Lyon for Clarkson to give North relevance and in fact financing most of his salary, reported of upwards of a $1Million?

But I thought North are standing financially on their two feet?

It would be an interesting test case if it was ever challenged. It’s not unheard of for clauses that are inherently unfair or unreasonable to be overruled by a judge applying, essentially, the pub test to it, despite both parties agreeing to it. As you‘ve suggested, you agree to it or don’t get the job which might be construed as unfair in and of itself.

Having rambled on with that, it would surprise me greatly if it was ever tested. At least in the current environment.

Depends what you mean by funding, everyone receives two types of funding, the standard distribution and the variable funding.

The standard distribution used to be the funding to cover things like the salary cap, but they have now cut back so richer clubs are having to cover more themselves.

Then the variable funding is the evening up money to try and create a level playing field, which can be a lot or nothing depending on your finances. So when you say they are paying for a coach, the reality is they are paying for most coaches and most staff at most clubs but the soft cap remains the same.

This is a good article about the past decade, interesting to note despite the hubris and regular sneering at poorer clubs, we have had a good run at extra money as well, more than 7 clubs in that period.

Reality is I think most professional sporting dismissals wouldn't hold up if legally challenged and they never do when someone does go down that road in other codes.

Brett Ratten was almost certainly executing his role and responsibilities at a very high level and there would be no grounds for dismissal, nor would there have been the execution of the required written warnings, performance management etc before a dismissal can take place.

The other one that will happen now as well is other people at St Kilda will be dismissed just because Ross Lyon wants his own people. I've been in that situation and lawyer friends of mine were amazed everyone just accepts that.

Ultimately challenging these things hurts your reputation and diminishes your chance of getting another job though, so everyone just moves on.

Wouldn't surprise if they poached Nathan Burke from Bulldogs ALFW.

I wonder what Brett Bowey is up to? What about Rod Owen?

Yep. That pretty much nails it.

Many industries are small… not many as small and public as this one! (Relative to our little corner of the world)

No success for Barrass when he returned to Melbourne either.
Barassi didn't "return" - really only had one proper stint as coach of Melbourne - 1981 to 1985.
The only time he ever coached Melbourne before that was for one game as a temporary replacement for Norm Smith who was away coaching the state team. Round 8, 1964.

Couldve been a RFC superstar if not for Muppet Arms being taken.

So was I. My recollections having played union at school. freo had several rolling mauls that would have made Cheka proud moving the ball forward over 20 metres on a number of occasions

I've heard Pav was considered a bit of a thumb sucker as a draftee and the feeling was he would be back to South Australia at the first opportunity, so that may well have put many teams off.

As it turned out he went to W.A, almost came home the first day after ending up in hospital after collapsing at training, but quickly grew up and embraced the opportunity to make a life somewhere else.

Another case which shows 90% of drafting is pure luck.
