What is happening with these midterms?

Looks like the GOP are not making the gains they thought they would, in fact, looks like it could be lower gains to the party without the Pres than we usually see in midterms.

Some important wins too such as the Secretary of State in Michigan, important as they oversee the elections in what is a swing state for the 2024 Presidential election, and the Dems have the governor in Pennsylvania which also has implications for the 2024 Presidential election. The Republicans have won the Georgia governor but this is the same governor who refused Trump's plea to overturn the vote in the 2020 Presidential election. These contests have become important with the Republicans trying to influence election results after the counting has finished. On a less optimistic note the Ohio Supreme Court is now stacked (they must elect judges in Ohio) which could be bad for many reasons - abortion rights, election results etc.

House likely to go Republican but not a big majority, Senate too close to call.

Such a confusing system there, I even noticed there were a few House seats where there was only 1 candidate, sort of reminds me of Soviet Russia when that happens.

Always remember - the USA is not 1 country, it is a union of separate, quite independent and powerful states. Or you could just say it's a circus.

This still amazes me. They are legally able to ignore the state voting results in Federal elections.

Aah, you have to go back to what I said above - the USA is not one country it is a union of states.

The President is not directly elected, they are elected by the Electoral College which is made up of representatives from each state. Ok, so how are the state reps on the Electoral College chosen? Well, that's up to each state. They all have some sort of election for their Electoral College reps, but the state legislature can choose to select them a different way, maybe the governor selects them, or the state legislature, the main thing to remember is that elections for the state reps on the Electoral College is not compulsory, states can choose to do this in a different way. Whether this means a state can ignore the vote when that is how the state decided that the Electoral College reps will be chosen is a bit of a question, I suppose they could in theory, but I suspect this will have to be tested in court if it happens.

One thing you may notice is that just about every state has a winner takes all result for reps to the Electoral College, but there are a couple of small states where the reps are proportional to the vote in that state, so you have a mix of Electoral College members, from the same state, supporting each candidate. What this shows is how little is set in stone, even the type of result can be different depending on how the state decides it will be done.

In short, it's insane!

Mid terms still looking close, Senate looks like it might be 50/50 again and maybe the Republicans get a small House majority. This will take weeks to sort and in Georgia there's likely to be a run off election for the Senate (they, unlike most states, don't have a first past the post system for Senators, they have what is generally referred to as a second ballot system, unless 1 candidate can get 50% + 1 of the vote then the 2 candidates with the highest number of votes have another election on Dec 6).

everyone is saying Ron DeSantis is the main GOP rival to Trump in 2024. Florida has basically had a “let it rip” COVID policy since day 1 and has consistently had one of the highest deaths rates in the USA. How the hell can anyone vote for this looney?

The amazing thing about the midterms is how the polling has proven to mean nothing again.

Polling is in trouble everywhere. Was easier when you could ring a landline you knew was in a particular electorate, now it is damned hard to get to a representative sample.

How this affects voting patterns etc I don't think anyone is entirely sure about.

It looks to me like the Dems benefited from getting people to vote as a response to the overturning of Roe v Wade, US elections are largely decided on the basis of who turns up to vote. Actually, that also makes polling harder!

It will be interesting to see how the Republicans owners, News Corp, react to the mid-term results, especially the rejection of Trump candidates in many seats.

I was actually wondering whether him running and winning mightnt be a bad thing. I dont know much about US politics, but from what i have read, he is pretty right wing, but not a loony- not promoting conspiracy theories, violence etc.
could him winning the presidency calm down the MAGA factions and restore a little more of the traditional "right"/"left" politics?

Did that Boebert get in?

Squeaky bum time for her but yes looks like she snuck in. For a state with an overwhelming Republican majority, thats a massive fail. I didn't know much about her, but read about her yesterday, she's a scary person to have in power. Yikes. A real Trump disciple.
