A bit like #4 and Hart v Martin, the best ever Richmond #29 will always have Hungry there. If Shai has a career that turns Best #29 into a debate, then we've got another AFL legend on our hands.

Both around the same height and Royce the better kick on his left leg, just.
They played in diffent era’s of course but if you put a 2017 Dusty on a 1969 Royce,
I am afraid poor Royce would struggle.

Ditto KB circa 1969 and Shai 2022.
Shai faster, more elusive, the better mark and the better at handball!
Of course KB might always have a day out and kick 7 from a flank in a grand final.

KB and Shai comparison is WAY too premature. KB played over 400 games.KB changed the dropping the ball/holding the man rule.KB probably played the best final series ever by a single person.

One thing Hart and KB have over their modern day counterparts is that they could deal with some pretty brutal physicality, something the players of today really don't see at all. On observed form, Hart & KB were tougher. They had to be to survive.

See post 6853. All you can do is compare their respective skills. As I have said above Shai will never reach KB’s games record but in terms of footy skill I am pretty sure he has him covered.

I don’t know. Tougher?

The game today is played at a faster speed by players who are physically bigger, stronger and faster.
The collisions that follow are more physically damaging than they were 50 years ago.
A lot of the physicality at that time grew from behind the play incidents.
I don’t know but it seems that to get out and play the game today requires at least as much courage now, as it did then.

The home of Dusty
I have absolutely no difficulty with the idea that he will be seen as an equal by the end of his career. 400 + games probably not but 5 premierships is not beyond the realms of possibility.
Plays the game like few others before him.

I'm not big on premierships as a measure of a player, but Bartlett won 5 Dyer Medals and 4 Roach Medals.

Bolton's exciting, but he would need to win 4 Dyers in this contract to be on that sort of pace.

If he plays say 300 and not 400+maybe we could give him a discount and settle for just the 3 JDM’s.
But I wasn’t really making a comparison based on gongs.

I was saying that you can compare them
only by comparing their skills and on that comparison that Shai already has him covered.

At least he didn't fly for imaginary Sherrins like someone of the same number.
Yes.... but without him we may never have drafted Bolton. ..... maybe I should rephrase that..... without him we would never have been in a position to draft Bolton. My fondness for Tyrone grows deeper every year!

And Jason Torney was quite a good footballer as well.

Torney was a very good player best to wear #29 since KB till Shai came along.

Bloody shame Spud let him go back to SA I liked Torney developed into a very good defender HB/BP.

Was on the fringe of that 1995 Finals side as a pup then broke in and stayed there playing 120 odd games for the Tigers before going back to SA to play 4 -5 odd years for the Crows.

Another who we got dibs on father /sons, as he didnt p[lay enough games for the Crows. Has he had kids .. any sons?

Pillar of the next five years. Left money on the table for sure. Richmond man.

I said on here at some stage he could be a different version of Dusty, impossible match up who just roams between forward and midfield. Still believe that.

Shai is an outrageous talent, there is nothing he cannot do.

The Tiger King at the peak of his powers annointed him the scariest and best talent he's ever seen.

Shai is a star, a game breaker. He has the potential to be a tiger great
Of course his skill level is better than KBs and so it should be with the junior pathway he came through , the training and development players get now.
However using that to compare him to KB is not valid. It’s like saying Dawn Fraser was no good because her times wouldn’t get her close to a national team now.
You look at what the player did in the era he played in and during that time KB was a champion footballer, one of our best ever. If he played now he would be a champion player as well because he possessed two things that you can’t teach in a footballer. He just kept on getting the ball and he had an eye for a goal as good as any player i have ever seen.
Shai is awesome but he has a long way to go before he is even mentioned in serious conversation as the best ever 29.

A Royce Martin. Now that would be some vehicle
