Grimes was always going to be an ace defender. Was obvious early.

This is very true. I remember his first game, his courage and anticipation were amazing and i thought, wow, he was similar to a rookie pick..

I remember very early days (before his German trip) i said to a Dees mate i reckon Dylan could possibly be AA, he scoffed they had the better brother...

Can't remember which site it was but there was a discussion, about 7/8 years ago' on the best defenders in the AFL at that time. One of us Tiger supporters nominated Grimes and was backed up by other Tiger supporters. The pile on ridiculing Grimes by the other club supporters was massive.

Would have universal support now you would think

Good looking Rooster and he's got a good size to him.....also has a nice thatch of hair. Reckon he offers more to our group than any tall pimply faced 18 year old we might have recruited.

Sounds like he's got all the attributes to succeed on Love Island...................................................

He'll be a good pick up and will develop well I reckon.

Not sure what the rules are on posting entire articles, so have just included an excerpt and link below:

Richmond rookie draftee Tylar Young’s off-beat path to the AFL

Tylar Young was drowning his sporting sorrows at his local when he was convinced to pick up a footy again. Four years later, he’s one of Richmond’s brightest prospects, writes SHANNON GILL.

There’s wall-to-wall big screens in the front bar of the Star Hotel in Albury showing sport from the big smoke and around the world.
It has become the choice venue for sports fans on the Victoria/New South Wales border to watch the big moments, but it can also lay claim as the birthplace of an unlikely sporting story of its own.....

The door has opened slightly for Tylar with Gibbo's injury setback

Hopefully Truck can weave some magic with this kid (24) and his exponential improvement continues

I asked a bloke next to me at training if anything impressed him out there on Monday. He said he was impressed with Tylar Young, this was after some one on one work vs Gibcus right in front us , (which sort of validated what I have said in some training reports),.
Great closing speed and explosive, is 196cm as well so Truck has something to work with that is for sure.

Very good last year and a bit of a surprise he wasn’t drafted earlier.

I wouldnt know Tylar if he popped up on my plate but going by Caeser's ytaining reports the kid seems a real talent with his size and athletic ability. Lets hope he has some mongrel in him that all good defenders need

Inspired selection by matty

We have had quite a few VFL selections who have gone on to AFL, most to Essendon of course. I wonder whether part of the vfl recruitment aim is to select players who are seen to have those traits rather than just be vfl players?
Has some risk of course as can be seen by the bomber raids
I have always felt that there should be some sort of priority given to the club who has the player on their vfl list

Couldn’t agree more Sin. The connection for a young footballer is much greater and more significant than being a member of a clubs Academy and at the very least a similar selection advantage should follow.

This should come under a first dibs type arrangement.

The parent club gets first dibs in the first round if they do not take the player then others can take them thereafter in the next rounds or something like that.

I think you have to give those guys the maximum opportunity to be selected without any restrictions.

Be very rare a club takes a player onto a VFL list without knowing about them previously, if they wanted to draft them they could have.

Turn it up! Every player drafted beyond say 10-15, in just about every draft, is largely a stab in the dark.
I reckon it is the bringing of these players into a club environment and following a players development with our coaching staff and leading players, which gives some level of insight.
In the case of a vfl recruit, giving some priority to a club which has invested that time and effort is both efficient and fair.

We had Tylar on our radar a few years ago when he was playing for the Hoppers in North Albury. That interest grew after some performances for Frankston and then subsequently a request last year for him to join our VFL squad. He was close to being rookied last year. I mentioned him in the 2021 Draft thread under a “code name” HANYDFT to keep it under wraps. (See if you can work that out !)

Tylar only started playing proper footy 5 or 6 years ago after pursuing a soccer career, so he is still raw and learning the game.

Maybe if a player is on a club's VFL list and is selected by another club, the first club could have the option to match the bid (like F/S)?
