That's my point against him, if this happens we're not in hell as we've had our glory and it's time to step back again and rebuild. Being over-dramatic is a bad habit of his. I can accept Barrett's opinion and comments better as shown further above this thread.

The bottom of the cycle is likely to be longer and deeper on the path we've taken if it goes wrong, compared to if we went on a rejuvenation path this year.

We've taken the path of Hawthorn and Geelong in trying to top up and maintain contention without too great a fall.

Geelong's result have been spectacularly successful and Hawthorn's completely awful. We could end up anywhere on that scale as well.

It's not just whether or not we bring in those two guys or we don't though, it's the entire picture.

For example, if we were going down the path of saying we need to rejuvenate we have either retired or traded Cotchin and Riewoldt, and possibly Dustin as well.

We are trying to improve our position in the draft as much as possible so are prepared to trade anyone over 25 if the offer is right.

The aim is to take another 5 or 6 picks last year to go with the ones the year before, then again next year, which gives us 15-18 players to try and get a core 8-10 out of.

In three years time we are looking to make the 8 again and challenge in the years after that.

I'm still a bit unsure but my feeling is leaning towards that we should have gone down that sort of path. Maybe there was a balance there where we brought Taranto in only to build around.

Benny, Blair and Co have all mentioned over recent times our list management goal is to "continually challenge".

So that is what we are gearing towards. i.e. the Geelong model.

Not so much the Hawthorn model who completely ignored the first/second end of the draft for many years.

The two were very very seperate in their approach.

Topping up by adding a 24 year old and 25 year old (at the time of the trade period), and Tarrant (who we brought in to replace Astbury as we wanted him to go on another year or two) the previous year, is nowhere near what the Cats and Hawks have done. Otherwise we’ve brought in a bunch of kids and are continuing to develop kids from previous drafts. We traded out of the 2022 draft but we still have a second and third rounder this year. We’ve re-signed a lot of our kids and have locked away important players (except for Balta) until at least 2024. We certainly haven’t sold the farm to bring in older players, we can’t be put under the same umbrella as Geelong and Hawthorn. Didn’t see them take 5 top 30 picks in the one draft while still at the peak of their powers

The comparison to the hawks is ridiculous. Between 2011 and 2019, the hawks had 2 1st rd picks, picks 19 and 22 in 2015. and 4 2nd round picks. we had one less than that in 2021 alone.

Cornes can’t help goosing himself. He dismisses the suggestion by David King that Damien Hardwick should rate up with the very best AFL coaches in the last 50 years by winning the 2023 flag. Then in the next breath he says Salty Scotty should be if he jags a 3rd flag this year.

According to part-time firefighter Kano, Geelong has had the greatest captain over this era versus the Tigers skipper Cotch who he says just doesn’t rate. Surely that means Hardwick’s coaching effort is clearly superior then.

Talk about Portboys complaint!

I subscribed to read it, it's a pretty good summary of the risk/reward aspects of our strategy.

I don't agree we have an injury crisis but I see how it can appear that way to a layperson, I'm more bullish on what Taranto will bring, less wary about Hopper and disagree on Cotchin, but otherwise I think he makes some pretty solid points.

As always, whoever is right will depend on how the results go. Top 4 or bust.
1 of the problems with the article is he clearly decided to write an article about how we could struggle then found reasons to back his view.
nothing he writes is wrong per say (except the hawthorn comparison) but all is arguable.
and this is wrong, twice in the 1 sentence: "Richmond have invested in recent drafts, namely 2021 when they selected four players inside the first 30 picks. Midfielder Tyler Sonsie (No.30) appears the pick of the bunch."

"Besides second-year players Sonsie and Josh Gibcus, there is not any other player under the age of 22 to be that excited about."-
I doubt he has ever seen guys like Banks, Brown and Clarke play, and if he wanted to write a puff piece he could included Cumberland, Rioli and Ralphsmith as exciting prospects.

"Richmond’s success in 2023 will again rely on a core group of players in the 28-to-33 age bracket. Chronic injuries have repeatedly struck down this crew." He is ignoring Bolton, Balta, Baker, DRioli, Short, Hopper, Taranto and Graham as pretty important players. Yes, if all our 28+ struggle with injury we will struggle, but name a side that wont.

"It is an injury crisis the club cannot ignore. The fragility of Dion Prestia, Dustin Martin, Dylan Grimes, Nick Vlastuin, Jayden Short, Noah Balta, Tom Lynch, Jack Graham, Ivan Soldo, Trent Cotchin and Gibcus is troubling."
How are the likes of Gibcus, Soldo, Short and Balta frail? Yes all have had had injuries, but who in the AFL hasnt. Short hasnt missed a game since 2019 FFS.

"even allowing former captain Cotchin to play on when it was apparent his time in the game is up." You can argue Cotchin should have retired, but equally you can argue he was right to play on.

"It will not be his worry if it all blows up; Hardwick is entering his 14th year as Richmond coach and, with three premierships to his name, he will probably be coaching at another club if this list-management strategy fails.
Like Mitchell at Hawthorn, it will be the new coach’s job to mop up the mess at Punt Road."-
Again Cornes has totally misread our strategy. We have continued to add young players to our list since Hardwick came, even since we stated winning premierships.

Port gave up pick 10 and a future 2016 second round pick for Charlie Dixon........and Cornhole was drooling. The clown then had the gall to criticise the Tiges for recruiting Prestia.
I wonder who the hypocrite reckons was the winner out of those deals.

"PORT Adelaide great Kane Cornes says trade target Charlie Dixon will be worth the wait for the Power, and could be a 70-goal-a-season key forward in the mould of All-Australians Josh Kennedy and Tom Hawkins.
As the Power continued to haggle with Gold Coast over a “fair’’ deal for the 25-year-old, Cornes said Dixon’s expected arrival at Alberton would pay big dividends.

“He’s 100 per cent worth getting on board, he would be an outstanding pick up,’’ said Cornes, who retired after playing his 300th game against Richmond in round eight this year.

“I think Dixon has the ability to be like a Kennedy or Hawkins; he’s in that calibre of player if he can get his body right.

“I think he’s that good and if he can get some consistency with his footy and his body - and he’ll get the right guidance from Kenny (Port coach Ken Hinkley) and (fitness coach) Darren Burgess - he can kick 60-to-70 goals a season.’’

Dixon, powerfully-built at 202cm and 110kg, booted a career-high 41 goals in 16 matches this year.

He has kicked 94 goals in 65 games in five injury-riddled seasons at Gold Coast.

Cornes said that if Dixon could stay fit he could emulate the feats of Eagle Kennedy and Cat Hawkins.

Kennedy won the Coleman Medal this year, kicking 80 for the season, while Hawkins has been Geelong’s leading goalkicker for four consecutive years.

“He’s strong, he’s aggressive and the new interchange cap (down from 120 this year to 90 in 2016) will probably help him as well because he’ll be able to play higher game time,’’ Cornes said."

This *smile* is a disgrace, couldn't wait to sink the boots into Dimma. If we're to win the flag in '23 he'd just sink the boots in again with a prophet of doom for '24. A horrible, horrible individual.

I think the comparison is not about the nuances of the individual approaches but the overall philosophy of being able to maintain a position as a contender by adding players to your list as you go, rather than the conventional method of dropping back in the pack and drafting before climbing again.

Hawthorn tried and stuffed it up, Geelong has done it differently and been a spectacular success, now we are doing it differently again and time will tell.

Disagree- over a period of 5-6 years we’ve been very balanced between regenerating via the draft and bringing in mature players. Nothing like hawthorn and Geelong model at all who both have overwhelmingly been on the bringing in the ready made players philosophy.

Chalk and cheese

Just shows you how little his judgement can be trusted. The fraud Charlie Dixon is the biggest small forward in the AFL. And always has been. 70 goals a season. Ha ha ha ha.

There's a lot of playing the man and not the ball here and dismissing the opinion because of who said it which is a shame for the sake of debate.

I get that Cornes is from the Hutchy school of journalism which is to be deliberately incendiary and that pushes buttons, but I also wonder whether the response is an element of being a bit uneasy that there's a chance he is right.

In preseason @bullus_hit wrote some of the most insightful posts I've seen. As I said at the time I've sat in some actual list management meetings and the quality of the discussion was no different. In my much less eloquent summary, BH's position was we should be addressing the issues with our game to keep us in contention without sacrificing so heavily at the draft.

Address clearances with a player like Tom Mitchell and by strengthening the ruck division with Brodie Grundy, both a much cheaper trade costs, and then still be able to access quality picks.

After reading those insights it was the first time I felt uneasy about the direction we were taking and after seeing how prophetic BH's opinions were around Grundy and Gawn vs us (albeit in one scratch match), I'm slightly more uneasy now. Go back and read the trade thread if you don't believe me, what he said is absolutely spot on in every detail. (again from one scratchy) Not panicking by any means but certainly a little worried.

So while Cornes' style may be flamboyant and he might use haymakers instead of jabs when making a point, to dismiss the crux of what he is saying as being personally based or as a result of some other agenda is too simplistic, because at least one highly intelligent and very measured deep thinker about the game share some of those concerns.
