2024 Draft Thread

@tigersnake would love to explore the APS/AGS with you further. I assume you aren’t a fan (might be wrong). IMO school footy at APS level is awesome, so much fun and as has been said to me it is the closest thing to College sports in Australia.
The amicable relationship with AFL Vic is just sensible and dealt with issues that existed 20 yrs ago where everyone wanted their pound of flesh out of the kids.
That it has attracted player managers into the orbit is just another tick for how good the footy and the programs that nurture these kids are.
Its a complex question to answer. Its not that I'm not a fan, but I do think its all a bit of an elite Vic-centred closed shop. I bear no ill will to the vast majority of parents and families who participate. On the one hand the system is rational and efficient, most of the good players are in Vic, even in a down year, so there is is a very good reason for the resources to be focused there, and the way the schools system has evolved means that it is an efficient way to allocate resources.

But I've seen first hand how it sets a bit of a haves and have nots, I ranted and raved about it when comparing how the Allies are run in comparison to VM and VC. In some ways this can easily be objectively measured, backed by evidence. For example VC and VM starting to select and train late in the previous season Vs Allies selected a month out and having one training session before the first game. The VM and VC game scheduled as the final game at the G because they expect it to be the GF.

Then there are other factors that are harder to argue, but I'm confident I could argue them, and I have at times, but need way too much time and words to present the evidence. A few of these are, the Northern Academies are allowed to participate in the Coates League, but they don't get points. They play less games sure, and more against each other, but in what is already an imperfect draw, you could work something out. You could in theory have a situation where a northern academy side flogged all comers, including its 3 Vic opponents, and doesn't play finals. Another big one for me is player favouritism, and the reverse, certain players, not many but its noticeable, who play for VM and VC and are leaders at their school and managed by the top managers, are pumped-up relentlessly and placed way higher in the draft ratings than they should be. (I think this year showed the recruiters are mostly onto this). Sure this has always happened a bit in some form, but these days the stakes are higher, and scrutiny and accountability expectations should be and are higher, in theory at least.

I get why the system would be seen as sensible, in many ways it is, and I don't begrudge people enjoying the footy, but I think it creates some dysfuntional outcomes at the margins. But, you could say that about any system right?

CTL is definitely a disrupted/dysfunctional program due to school footy. All the stops/starts, teams running like Sandy and Oakleigh running with what is almost a 2nd best 22 due to so many kids being in the APS/AGS through the season. I don't thing there is a solution to this.
One thing is for sure during the APS season there would be as many if not more recruiters at their games v CTL.
Did you have an example of a player relentlessly pumped up from school who got overlooked in the draft? I have a few but both these kids were selected by VM and AA Academy which is independent of the recruiters so not sure who to blame there.
Anyway, APS has one thing CTL will never have...half time spread...scones with jam and cream never gets old!!!

Pardon the pun, but where is he expected to fall in the draft?
Tall forward, with a ground game, stands in packs. That's first round stuff. I want to see more of him to judge his kicking and leap but he can run like few that size. Reminds me of Logan McDonald. Defitnely one for us. No big forwards coming across from free agency or trades that represent value, it feels like with out bevy of drafts picks we are going to get a tall forward at some stage. We clearly will look to do business with father sons and academy picks and turn 6 or 7 picks into 2-3 inside 25.

After a R0 thumping it's only natural we look to a draft in which we will have a stacked hand.

No junior footy yet, but @eZyT has already planted his Jagga Smith flag, while @bengal tigers has a crush on Sam Lalor. Both great prospects. Smith looks the early favourite for #1, with his clean hands, speed and evasiveness. Lalor is bigger and more powerful, looks a beauty too.

Finn O'Sullivan is a tough, balanced mid who marks, kicks and runs well. Josh Smillie could push for #1 with his 194cm frame, athleticism and midfield ability. My boy Zak Johnson is a similar type to Lalor, around the 187cm mark, a smooth mover with power and skills.

Sid Draper, Christian Moraes.

Not a lot of noise about talls as yet but they could emerge as the year progresses. Plenty of quality mids by the looks.

This is the draft to completely overhaul the midfield. And we really need to badly.

I will claim my boy Christian Moraes. He is the exact type of inside outside midfielder with speed that we need. He plays well in big games too.

Which kid goes to a good school and has good family and needs a *smile* loaf of development?
That's who we are into.

Oakleigh v Sandy Friday 5pm at RSEA Oval (Saints HQ)
Plenty of kids to check out.
For Oakleigh I’m keen to see Pat Retschko (187cm mid) and Charlie Richardson (192cm forward)
For Sandy - Harrison Oliver (low 180cm HBF) and Sam Buck.
The midfield clash of Finn, Jagga and Gross v Ashcroft and whoever else Sandy send it should be a ripper.

Kicking is ordinary. If you get annoyed by Taranto and Hopper with their average foot skills you gonna hate Moraes.
