A sane and objective response to how particular individuals in the media treat Richmond is going to be difficult to find here these days.

Whateley‘s call of all four of Dusty’s goals was superb. Goosebumps.

That six minutes is fantastic. Time capsule stuff.

I'm a fan of Huddo but geez I'm glad it was Gerard on the mic for all four of those goals. He just ... grasps the moment.

I'll put it out there; Whateley is the game's best play-by-play caller.

(Although I do like Tony Leonard, too.)

Yes, he's a fan. Yes, he was able to subdue the fact he's a Cats supporter and call the game well.

You can be an AFL Lapdog and still call a good game of footy and love the spectacle that is a Richmond win.

But the campaigning he did when Gil & Hocking needed him to get us all ready for significant changes to the rules won't be forgotten easily. Brushing that off as a reaction to how he treats Richmond is just being lazy or trying very hard to be the #2 Contrarian of PRE.

Credit to Gerard also being a Cats supporter but maintaining his total professionalism & being totally invested in those plays. Many don't.
He's at his best when he's calling, not pushing agendas.

Have to agree here, his interview technique is awesome & he's a brilliant broadcaster. his agenda pushing is where he loses me

Is this the 6-6-6 you're referring to, @Baloo? I don't recall who was on that train and who wasn't but it's fair to say everyone, not just Whateley, had a point of view on it. Given it was a significant talking point at the time, you can't be surprised he provided an opinion.

I suppose I find it hard to reconcile that someone can put aside his biases to professionally commentate on the game while at the same time pushing agendas at the behest of someone else. Doesn't strike me as being logical, and I'm not even sure why he'd do that. His currency, surely, is independence?

Maybe part of your issue is that many footy personalities are almost omnipresent. In Whateley's case, he's on SEN—his own show, Crunch Time and calling of games—plus he's on 360. He used to also write for the HUN but I don't know if he still does that. Lloyd, Cornes, Carey, Lyon are others are in the same boat. If they have an opinion, it's shared far and wide and maybe makes it seem that point of view is amplified.

It's a broader problem in the AFL world. We do need more voices.

The one I'd actually be concerned about is Craig Hutchison. Not just questionable ideas but has the power and influence to actually make them happen.
I'm #2 Contrarian and no-one can take that away from me

Yes as I posted the other day he is much better caller than he is a pontificator. His preaching can be cringeworthy.

I can only assume you dont listen to SEN or watch AFL360 if you don't think he was pushing a definite agenda that was in complete lockstep with the AFL.

As others have pointed out, he's a good caller when he calls. No one is disputing that. But he has a long history of pushing agendas hard. The two are in no way mutually exclusive.

obvious he was pushing the night grand final agenda also
Twilight actually. But you notice that anyone who prefers day is just being silly, stubborn and rooted in the past? Dismisses them very quickly, again.

Or has he back-tracked to being a 'twilight' fan now? That's what I heard him support post GF but it was one of the few times I had listened to him recently (wanted to hear the humble pie being acknowledged!).

Robbo still reckons we can't win it because Brooke went to the beauty saloon, Stack bought a Sov with No garlic sauce and BigV's finger is still stuck up Chol's bum.

All of sudden our culture is the best.
Winning = culture

Whateley is the Minister for AFL propaganda! Wax's on like he is a prodigy and dismisses the common blokes opinion.

Elitist!
Seems like too many Geelong people with too much control over the game.

Robbo is just a ignorant opinionated bloke that I would avoid in a bar cause they won't shut the #$#$ up and would argue salt and vinegar chips are the only chip a decent human would eat and thats why Richmond are the worst football club in history!

Door ornament!

Disclaimer: Sure, probably good blokes if you know em personally! Price of fame!

Yeah, agree with this. he's an AFL Lapdog first and foremost, pushing their agenda hard. The 6 6 6 and other rule changes that year were implemented after a year long campaign of Whately bringing it up at every chance on every platform. The game needs help, The scores are too low. We need more goals. AFL's duty is to change. Hocking has his committee loaded with stats and facts and AI and ML and they will bring the game back to a high scoring extravaganza.

The fact that since those rules changes we've had less goals than ever before is never mentioned. If anyone dares mention it, the blame goes to the coaches for focusing on winning games rather than making them exciting.
As a counter proposal to the suggestion of retaining the 16 minute quarters next year, Danger, Gerard and Hocking are pushing that the quarters be allowed to go out to 18 minutes each while reducing the number of quarters per game to 2.

"Those extraneous 3rd and 4th quarters have probably cost us a couple of flags recently."

So what you’re saying is you’re not the same as a prototypical contrarian; you de-identify slightly with that role.

Such a contrarian thing to do!

The problem with Whately’s call of Dusty’s last goal, is that Hudson didnt react and Lyon was so in awe of it, it took him a while to come out and say anything.
Whately could have been a little more enthusiastic and unbelieving with that last goal, it truly was the goal of the year, just happened not to qualify because it wasn’t in the H&A season.
‘What a load of BULL SIHT!!!!!!!!!’
