PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

I have all the Name-a-Game Grand Finals since 1965 on video and I am gradually copying them to DVD. I just got up to 1982 and as a result I yet again watched portions of that game last night.

I don't think we as a club should be ashamed of losing that match. OK, we *should* have won it, but gee it was one of the toughest GFs in recent times, and in some ways I would ALMOST trade winning the 1980 GF for winning it in 1982. It would have been more of an achievement. Carlton were a club worth beating then and the scum never have been.

But the one thing that sticks out like the proverbial watching these old Grand Finals is how much the game has changed for the worse. It is absolutely mind-boggling how many times in a single quarter I find myself marvelling at a sensational contested pack mark by a player like Jim Jess or Dermot Brereton. It just doesn't happen now. The beautiful long kicks to a key forward was the hallmark of the game and it almost doesn't exist anymore.

I know it's a cliche but the modern game really does look like basketball (or worse ... soccer) in comparison. To me it is more entertaining to watch one of these old GFs (even one Richmond is not in) than it is to watch a modern day Richmond win (as rare as they are).

I just hope the AFL know what they are doing.
