After hearing about 1980 and how great a side we had and learning about the year I began thinking about our other finals appearances.
The 1995 year was one of my favourite Richmond sides of my life. Not because they made the finals, but because they were battlers. John Northey had them chasing, tackling and fighting tooth and nail at every contest. Every week you knew if the side didn't give a %110 they were no certainty to win it. They scrapped wins out and in my view over achieved.
Looking back we had no key forward once Richo went down at the SCG and relied on Nick Daffy & Chris Naish. Daffy and Campbell with Beatles haircuts were cutting up sides. I think this is were Sheedy called Daffy the "best small forward in the game" one nite on Talking Footy. Broders was a poor mans Greg Williams and just kept going all day. And Greg Dear and Benny Gale were a formidable ruck duo.
But that year will always be reembered for the two Essendon games. The Round 15 Friday night classic draw. I had a friend playing in the Essendon reserves, he was playing at the then Northern Knights and was called up to get a game to fill a spot. So a few of the boys went early to support him. I will never forget before the main game, there was a almighty dust up in the reserves game (remember those days? they were magic when will the AFL bring back Curtain raisers of some sort) At about the 25 minute mark witha packed MCG already bayying for blood, there was just a electric feel to the night. One of those times at the footy one just know you are seeing something that you won't forget. Then out of the blue a huge donnybrook broke out. Not pushing shoving but goold old fashioned 1980's biffos. The crowd went nuts and it was the reserves!! Already we were hurling abuse at Essendon players and the main game was yet to commence. Good times. As both teams ran on the ground the MCG was just a buzz. The G had a Primal feel to, like I imagined the Colosseum would have been back in the days of Roman Empire.
And the main game did not disappoint, just a cracker. I think big Stephen Jurica kicked a bag and for the first time i really noticed how good James Hird was. Just carved us up. Steiw Maxfield kicked that long bomb that is almost Bruce Mcavenys greatest call. The whole nite ranks amongst my 5 favourite footballing games I have ever witnessed.
Finally enough another one in my favourite games was the famous Semi Final against the Dons. was stuck amongst about 30 Essendon fans with Dad and boy did they get yappy to us in the first half. By the end of the third quarter it was COMEBACK CITY USA, population 2, me and dad. They went very quite, very quickly. Scotty Turner knocking over blokes, Daffy and Naish having great second halves and Buck Rogers getting the better of Bomber Thompson in the lasst quarter. The last quarter was on Fox Footty the other nite and it got me thinking about the whole year. It was a great year. Would be intrested to hear other PRE enders views on 1995.
