Got into work on Monday and a Pie supporter I work with was whinging about how many 1st round draft picks Carlton had in the team that beat them---he said there were seven. Got me thinking about how many we had playing for us---and I reckon the figure is maybe 9
Cotchin
Reiwolt
Oakley Nicholls
Delidio
Tambling
Patterson
Schulz
Polak
McMahon(?)

(plus --Richo would have gone 1st round if not for Father/son. Was Nathan Brown a 1st rounder??
Is this correct??
Any others

There are first round choices in a strong draft, then there are draft choices in weaker drafts. We seem to have had more high picks in the weaker drafts where there hasn't been the depth.

At the risk of pointing out the obvious every team gets a 1st round draft pick.

I would've thought the word 'round' may have given the game away.

yep browns another. interesting that 8 of the 10 that played were all wallace period.4 of those 8 look to be solid picks.

LOL

Yes, but have a close look at where each player was selected in their draft.

It would be no coincidence that nearly every solid player was a < #6 pick. Which supports the point that really elite players can only be picked with near sure confidence to picks #4/5 in a draft. The rest of the first rounders will play AFL footy but how elite they will become in the AFL will become less confident.

There will always be eventual elite players that can come from further back in the draft but these become less in probability.

As we should know, the only thing the early pick gives you is a DEGREE OF CONFIDENCE that the pick that you take will be an elite player. It guarantees nothing.

There's been a bit of talk around about how many "first rounders" are playing at Carlton and Richmond but as someone rightly pointed out each club gets a first round pick, what they do with it is up to them. Trade them or use them. I'd like to know how many first rounders are at each of the 16 clubs.

And some trade for them and some get more via priority picks (I would classify priority picks as first rounders).

Obviously those that trade for them, get more via priority picks and keep them will have more than other clubs who haven't.

Cotchin - Deledio - Tambling and Riewoldt are the only ones worth hanging onto going forward imo.
