2004/05 Premier League

Re: 2004/05 Premier League

Struggs, surely the Cubs management isn't stupid enough to keep Sosa, who's clearly past it (on this years performance anyway) and let Alou go. I also reckon Sammy and his constant little digs at Dusty were a big reason the Cubs never seemed to have any good team chemistry this year.

It's aslo a shame that they're more than likely to lose Clement. He might have only gone 9 & 13, but he started 30 games, averaged 6IP per start and was in the top 10 in the NL for both ERA and K's. I hope the Sox go after him as a replacement for Lowe, but will be very suprised if the MFY don't get him.

Jackson, Mussina might win tomorrow, he might not. If he does win, at least I'll always have the excuse that your team had to spend $70,000,000 more than mine to get where they are, and basically ruined the chances of 3/4 of the teams in the MLB along the way.

Re: 2004/05 Premier League

Aaaah Disco Inferno. I admire your optimism - but just as it does with a lot PRE'enders and Richmond, I can't help but think its the 'ol "sunnysider" attitude coming through that's forcing you into a form of delusion over the Red Sox as well.

Arroyo is not good enough at the highest level. Pure and simple. Like countless other Red Sox players before him, he shows a bit here and there - especially during the regular season - but when the mental pressure comes to its highest bearing (i.e. when you are playing the Yankees in the playoffs) he is not capable of getting the job done. He did not just beaten the other day, he completely capitulated.

He's not alone though. Every season there are a number of Red Sox players who on paper just don't look good enough v the Yankees. Sure they stack up ok against other teams, but when they are playing THE BEST in the playoffs they inevitably prove they haven't quite got what it takes.

Honestly, have a look at the Yankees lineups over the years. Going into the playoffs people cast this aspersion and that. But they nearly always get the job done at the business end of the year. They play well under pressure when the Red Sox players don't. History proves it....

Over the years the Yankees have had more depth in terms of true quality players and quality players who can also handle big time pressure. The Williams', the Jeters, the Posada's, the Knoblauchs, the Riverias, the Martinez's....infinitum....they just get the job done. And that's all that counts. The Red Sox get these above average players who, when it comes to comparing them against the Yankees just don't match up.

To evidence lets look at the batting lineups this year: the Yankees of Jeter, Williams, Sheffield, Rodriguez and Matsui v the Red Sox line up of what ? Ortiz and Ramirez. Maybe Damon as well. But as for Mueller and Millar...they're nowhere near the league of the aforementioned - despite what any statistics and regular season play may have you think.

Ditto the pitching. Certainly this year the Yankees have looked frail and the Red Sox have gone and got Schilling to help. But inevitably you're always wondering about the 3rd, 4th and 5th string pitchers of the Red Sox and whether they're gonna get the job done or not.

Frankly, I have never understood why the ownerships of the Red Sox over the years haven't just simply bitten the bullet and outspent the Yankees and acquired the best team by a mile in order to win one World Series and get over the huge psycological hump that they constantly have to contend with. Geez, one World Series win for the massive Red Sox Nation would pay for the salary expense in itself. Just do it.

Re: 2004/05 Premier League

Its the red sox fault there not on the winning end this season as it turns out the diference is the yankees were prepared to pay all of A-rods pay unlike the red sox who wanted the goods at half price

Pfft. The MFY were able to afford to take on all of Arods salary because an extra twenty mill is a joke to Steinbrenner and Cashman. The fact we did or didn't get him has had very little to do with this years (undetermined) result anyway. If the Sox were going to get him, they would have had to trade Manny Ramirez for him, and Manny is ahead of Arod in Avg, HR's and RBI's, so in theory we actually would have been worse off. And the Sox didn't try and get him for half price, they negotiated a contract with Arod that backended alot of his salary so that they could afford him until they could offload a couple of other bad contracts. Arod agreed. In the end the players association who vetoed the deal (for ludicrous reasons) was the only obstacle to Arod signing with the Sox.

In your opinion. You will however find many Sox fans who think that Arroyo is more than good enough, especially as a player who this year earns under $1,000,000, allowing the Sox to fit players such as Pedro, Schilling and Manny into their payroll. For such a cheap player to have top 20 results in ERA, K's, WHIP and K/BB is sensational. And if you've watched him pitch much, you'd have noticed how good his stuff is. His curve (which he throws from a variety of arm angles) and slider are excellent, and have made good players look silly all year.

They don't do it because they can't justify or afford it. They spend what they can afford to spend. Most teams are limited to spending only up to the luxury tax limit (most teams can't afford to spend anywhere near this amount anyway). Steinbrenner ignores this because he can afford to, and because he doesn't care that buying championships is a hollow way to do it anyway.

And Red, you're incredibly down on a team that hasn't been eliminated yet. I don't know about you, but after sweating through 169 games this year, I'm not about to give up hope until it's truly over.

Re: 2004/05 Premier League

they should give the title to Arsenal now, no one is going to get close to them.

Chelsea play a boring defensive match. Man Utd still havent got over the lose of Beckham. Liverpool not up to it.

Mind you, Everton are a suprise packet this year. Thought they would be fighting relegation but instead flying in third position.

i havent followed the premier league at all this year (coz of the lack of footage on free-2-air) but i have heard of the recent happenings involving Adrian Mutu.

http://www4.sbs.com.au/epl/index.php3?id=51452

here is an article from the world game. i agree that seven months was a bit soft, but he does have to be rehabilitated, pay a fine and is now hard to contract.

would anyone else like to share their views on the matter?

i would also like to add my sorrow due to Johnny Warren's recent death.

Its been a long while since we've done it,getting close but no cigars for 20 odd years.
The last time I was in the UK I went to the West London derby(2002) and sat in the Chelsea end and had to keep my big trap shut :(

Ahem ;D

Dear oh dear how quickly some clubs get inflated opinions of themselves. It was only in 1996 that Al-Fayed started bankrolling your push from the foot of the Third Division. Until you got in the premiership the last time you would have played Chelsea was when they were terrorising the old Second Division in the early 80s and you had Ray Houghton in your side. And that Welsh git with the tash, Ivor someone, who cares he was only Fulham. QPR were still in the top flight until 1996 so most of the time in the last twenty years your big games of the season meant a derby against the Mighty Bees.

Don't look now, you're only six points above the relegation zone and there's a young Brentford side nicely situated in a play-off spot, with ex-Palace winger John Salako a cut above the rest in ahem Coca Cola League One.

Hey Strugs, how do you fancy a trip to Griffin Park next season? ;D

They were lucky to beat us on Saturday though, yes they were (runs away crying)

Now now fellas what are you all whinging about? At least your sides have won a game. My team Norwich City have lost only 4 times but have drawn 8 without a win. On the weekend a goal up and against 10 men yet we still concede the equalizer in the 86th minute. They really don't know how to win at the moment.

Wonder if Arsenal will bring their own caterers for their next visit to Old Trafford in a fortnight ?....Perhaps borrow a couple from 'The Iron Chef' ....

Think Mr Souness better make sure he's up to date on all his medications should his team finish 2nd to Man Ure on Sunday....
