PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Hi everyone,

i just want to outline why i think 2005 was a pretty good year for us.  At the start of the year i contributed to a thread about where i thought we'd end up on the ladder.  i suggested between 12-16.  This was ridiculed by some but i thought it was accurate.

so to finish 12th was pretty good i thought, being the top end of my prediction. We were only a game and a half out of the eight and were still a chance with a round or two to go.  we finished 12th but a game behind the 9th side.

ten wins was twice as good as 2004 and has to be seen as a step forward.  we also beat last year's grand final teams in port and brisbane.  The port win was the most excited i have felt about my club for years.  Thats got to be a good thing.

we also beat sydney who are a really good side and also the dogs and freo who could have made the finals.  thats got to be another positive step.

and of course we thumped carlton (was it 85 pts?) and i hate them like disease. and collingwood and essendon who are pointless scum.  we beat the hawks twice and thats probably a good thing cos we started the season in a similar position to them.

of the newcomers to the club one cannot but feel thrilled with deledio's year.  abslolutely wonderful for a young player and to play every game is fantastic.  i dont give a poo about th rising star crap but he was a real bonus and offers us hope for the future.

shane tuck was great this year and i look forward to him getting even better in the next few years.

Richo kicked 60+ goals and was up there with gehrig and hall as a real power forward; and he seemed to lose the ridiculous histrionics of the past.  thats gotta be  a good thing.

Brown was wonderful early and won games off his boot.  i guess we relied on him a bit too much as was seen after his injury, but how long is it since we've had a player of his class?  i only hope he can reproduce this form early next year and beyond.

gaspar, chaffey, pettifer, newman and hyde all have their faults, but they were improved from last year.  thats anothr bonus.

and of the other emerging players i thought thursfield and foley looked pretty good.

of the recycled guys i thought simmonds and knobel showed promise but were inconsistent.  but we did well despite this and i think they can offer a bit more next year as we try to make the next step.

the coach?  well, although his rasping voice really gets on my nerves, at least he wasnt coming out with some of the inane rubbish that frawley did.  he might be a bit self promoting, but at least our press was positive and regular and not always a media knee jerk reaction to losses and disasters.  on the field our passion and skills seemed to pick up and some of the tactics were clearly superior to recent years.

so, all in all  i think we took a big step forward this year.  it's a hell of a lot better than the ignominy of finishing last.  to be a chance of making the finals has to be a positive.

the delisting of some underachievers has been welcome, hopefully a couple more to come.  i hope we can grab another key defender, a pacy onballer and another classy small forward to complement the current team.

we have to finish higher next year. lets hope we can sneak into the bottom of the 8 and have some september action.

i used to be a closet darksider, but now i am happy with where we are.  thats gotta be another good thing!!!

Cassady
(happy for his team; on the road to finals in 2006)
