As we're only a week away, I guess it's about time we started with our preview.
Gives us a chance to have a look where we are now, and how we compare to the Doggies. And of course, who'll win and why.

I'll be hoping to post my preview within the next day.
I'm sure there are many others who'd like to have a go too.

All's welcome. Hope to be posting soon.

Quite sure I'll be nowhere near as extensive as you Phanto but my thoughts are simple on this game.
* It will be won (as most games are) in the middle. We need to match the dogs speed and ball winning ability. If we get a 50/50 result here that will be great. Hopefully Simmo/Staff can beat Street/Skipper to improve the quality of our supply to midfielders. This will give us enough ball to supply our forwards who appear to have a clear advantage. Richo does love playing these guys and there appear to finally be some other options too. IF we do this, and it ain't as easy as it sounds - we'll be a good chance.

I actually like our chances in this game. Tiges by 21 points for mine.

Not disagreeing MB but gee I cant wait to the day where I dont have to go the footy hearing everybody say "too Quick for us"Good to know we have addressed this issue

Looking at Footscray over the last few weeks:

NAB Rnd1:
Lost by 4 points to Melbourne in Darwin.
Kicked 1.7.12 (63)

Challenge Cup (Rnd2):
Lost by 78 points to the mighty Tigers in Shepparton.
Reckon they would have been tired after a hot & hard Darwin the week before.
Kicked 15.6 (96)

Challenge Cup (Rnd3):
Won by 11 points v Sydney at Princes Park.
Kicked 13.15 (93)

Challenge Cup (last week):
Lost by 3 points to Carlton in Albury.
Had 10 separate goalkickers each kicking one goal only.
Kicked 10.16 (76)

Would indicate that the Bulldogs will score in the range between 60 to 100 points.
Last season, they averaged 108 points.

One would expect Johnson, R.Murphy, Robbins & Grant to be their key goal kickers.
Gilbee, West & Cross should do well again.
Giansiracusa & Hahn, I expect, should be the big improvers this season.
With Cooney, Griffen & Ray, because they are younger, it's harder to predict.

They didn't have Darcy last season, so missing him again won't affect them.
Minson is a loss, but they still have Street & Skipper.

Gutfeel is that it will be hard for them to kick over 100 points. If we kick 17+ goals, we'll win.

We won, in the Rivalry Round, Rnd 3, at Telstra Dome last year by 4 points. They kicked 11.18 (84) to our 12.16 (88)

Pre season means nothing.

This will be a tough game for us first up. It's hard for us to kick over 100pts as well with our current forward setup. Particularly with Browny playing to about 75% of his ability.

As it's being played at the Dome our chances improve, as our overall quality in talls should be to strong for the Bullies, although as we know our record isn't fantastic playing there.

Once again Richo will be the key to this match.
If he's"on" we'll win. If Harris gets the better of him as he did in rd20 last year then we'll struggle to kick a winning score.

I'm sensing a tight game with a narrow victory. Tiges by 8pts.

Looking at our own preseason form,

Rnd1 NAB:
Lost by 10 to the Hawks.
Kicked 11.9 (75)

Challenge Cup (Rnd2):
Won by 78 over the Doggies.
Kicked 26.18 (174)
But the Doggies had played in Darwin the week before.

Challenge Cup (Rnd3):
Won by 40 over the Cygnets.
Kicked 13.11 (89)

Challenge Cup (Rnd4):
Lost by 51 to the Dons.
Kicked 11.6 (72)

Me thinks that there won't be much between the Doggies and us.
Could be a very close game.

We know from previous meetings that this will be a free flowing game (unless either coach is willing to take a chance).
It will all come down to our ball skills. We can run with the the bullies but if we deliver badly we will get hurt on the rebound (as we have seen before).

I hope we learnt a lot from the Bumbers game in terms of getting the ball moving and what precise skills can do for you.

I know it's only a practice match, but on the face of it, it's madness to think this is the only game our spearhead and leading goalkicker didn't play in.
Particularly when compared to our other scores during the pre season...

Some day we'll wake up, as did StKilda before us.

I think it did us well to get a kick in the pants before entering the season!
Playing competitive sport you are always more fired up after an embarressing lose!!!!

I just hope Gaspar pulls up OK after the Mildura game.

Does anyone know how he's travelling?

Terry said last night he'll be right for the match. (see Tiger Lilies thread)

He also said the boys were really flat in Mildura due to the high intensity emotions surrounding the game and that Essendon had handled it much bettter probably due to their experience in the Anzac Day clashes.

I'm not so worried about our ability to get the ball into our forward line - i think we'll win that one - but am worried about our ability to place pressure on the WB's rebound from half back - if we hold them up or force disposal to contests we will win

I know practice match form mustn't be taken too seriously, but I was at the Dogs v Melb game and conditions were nowhere near as bad as have been made out. It would have been about 25-26deg and the humidity wasn't that high as there was rain about. I'd say many other practice games (eg, Pies v Freo) this season have been played in more trying conditions.

In addition, the dogs apparent super-speed was not really a factor in this game either. I got the impression Daniher knew full well how to handle this and that perhaps it's the dogs only realy strength. Eliminate that and what's left?

This is why I'll be tipping us. I think the dogs might have drawn to themselves a little more attention than they did last year when they slipped under the late season radar of a few sides. They might just have been sorted.

Of course, I'm wrong about countles things on a daily basis. ;)

if we go in with our tall fwd line as i predict we will get hammered
with a fwd line of

Brown (on 1 leg) Stafford Krakour
Pettifer Richo Bowden.P

theres a lot of rebound coming outa that fwd line and not a lot of chase tackle or pressure

god help us if we dont break even in the middle, hold our marks or dont kick straight

The last time we played them in a real game they beat us by a couple of goals in a very even, entertaining match. They were too fast for us but we went into the game with Campbell, Graham and Hilton. I think Stafford might have played too. We will be quicker this time around. We took them on at their Ferrari game with quite a few Volkswagons in the team.

The key match ups for us will be on their forward line. Robert Murphy, Robbins, Giansiracusa, Hahn and esp Johnson hold the key to the game. If we can beat these players we will win the game. We match up well against most but Johnson is particularly hard. He was too good for Newman. Who else do we have?

Brad Johnson may get , good lord he does give us problems doesn't he.

Even thoug he carved Newman I still think he gets another go at him. Almost through lack of options. Actually makes me still worry about small backs when the very first game of the year we are struggling for a Plan B.

For Raines or Hartigan to start on John and get carved up would really be a bad start to the year and set them back a long way in confidence but then again if there not up to the challenge now, will they ever be??
