2006. a yr we finished 9th. but in imo we were clearly a bottom 4 side. 8 of our wins were against bottom 4 sides. 9 were against the bottom 7 sides.the top 8 sides we beat were co and ad.

when you look at the sides who finished below us this yr in the main they did well in 2007 apart from carl and ess who were clearly in full on rebuild mode. did these sides tank.

it seems to me whilst we were going full tilt to win as many games as possible these sides once they realised they couldnt make the 8 went into tank mode. they chased eearly picks in one of the strongest drafts of all time. we won 3 of our last 4 those wins were against ess 15th ca 16th and bl 13th imo we should have tanked in these games.

have a look where each side went from in 06 to where they finished in 07. geelong 10th to 1st. hawthorn11th to 5th. pa 12th to 2nd. brissie 13th to 10th. with another horror run of injury. kangaroos 14th to 4th sheesh even ess went from 15th to 12th out of the bottom 4. and carlton imo could quite easily have gone from 16th to around 10th but they were in full on tank mode again.

in the last rnd of 06 every bottom 8 side got beaten convincingly except hawthorn who beat geelong and there was nothing riding on the result for them.we played wce who were playing for top spot they duly trounced us by 88 points but should have been another 100point thrashing. if anything should of showed us where we were truly at it was this game.

anyway its my opinion that the tank is entrenched in our system and i think it silly for clubs not to use the system as best they can. i think the o6 season clearly indicates this.

Hard to argue with in reality claw. It's time to bring in a lottery system for the bottom 8 I reckon.

'06 was the last year where PP's were before the first round of the ND, more of an incentive than before the
2nd round as we have now, although 3 picks anywhere in the top 20 is still a big incentive.(Except for Richmond of course. Who wants 3 of the best 20 youngsters in the land for Gods sake?)

Personally I'd scrap all priority picks to begin with and go from there. It'd just be a shuffle of the order rather than an extra pick, which is basically what the tank is all about.

On '06, from memory Essendon were so blatant about it, it was comical at times.

Edit : Obviously forgot 16 points or less 2 years in a row, and you get a pick before the first round. Scrap that too.

I thought the rules changed in 06. Didn't Essendon pick Hislop or Jetta with their PP?

Yeah your right '06 was the first year for PP's before the second round.
Tells me clubs think an extra pick anywhere in the top 20 is well worth the tank.

Get rid of 'em.

(That was a good first post of the year - think I just kicked the wrong way.) :help
