PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Although it is sometimes not fair to make comparisons between things like, Sir Donald Bradman and Ricky Ponting, Pharlap and Makybe Diva or Wayne Carey and Royce Hart, because it has only been 3 years, I think that comparing our wooden spoon season of 2004 to this year can be made fairly.

In 2004: In 2007:

4 wins and 18 losses 3 wins 1 draw 18 losses

The end of a coaching tenure The middle of a coaching tenure

Mature average player age Very young average player age

Poorly funded football dept Much better and improving funded football dept

1st time coach 2nd time coach

Unstable board Stable board

Division and infighting Relative push in one direction

Massive media scrutiny Low media scrutiny

$2m plus loss Estimated $0.5 to $1m profit

Average injury list Key midfield and best player injuries

Many so called "duds" on list Very few "duds" left if any after this years delistings

Players not looking at all interested Although upset re: gaspar/Kellaway, determination and endeavour certainly evident

Shocking skills Skills definately improving

Add what you will but this years spoon is no way "as bad" as the spoon of 2004.

Our club is stable and financial and our list is young and on the improve.

Despite many dissapointments this year and maybe next year, our list is in far better shape and our skills are infinitely better than the 2004 list despite being a whole lot younger.

We do have along way to go, but with some good recruting in the draft and PSD, the return of fit Simmonds, Coughlan and Brown, and more games under the belts of Foley, Thursty, Lids, Bling and Patto etc, surely Richmond has some much brighter days ahead despite again being recipients of the 2007 wooden spoon.
