2007 draftees

I reckon they'll give gus a 1 year deal.

He needs to bulk up more, and work on his kicking. I think given our poor ruck stocks at the moment, the cards will fall in his favour.

so if someone like ivan maric wants to come home and we have psd pick 1 would you take him or gus?

its no competition mate, gus has a long way to go

I'd take both, and Kreuzer. Knobel won't be here next year and we've already seen what happens when our thin stocks of ruckman get injured. Simmonds, Graham, Maric (or whoever, Meeson et al) and Kreuzer pushing up. Add a ruckman on the rookie list (Graham to main list) and our ruck problems, while not over, would look significantly better.

And hey, we could delist Ray Hall.

Rightly or wrongly, the knock on Al Neville is that he's too slow. (Was he ever on Hawthorn's Rookie List at one point ? Dont think he ever was, but can someone confirm ?)

Obviously they're going to have to make a decision on Angus Graham at the end of the year, and I dont think it will be a favourable one for the lad unfortunately.

Is it right that no more than 3 players can be on a club's Rookie List for the second year in a row ?

Pretty sure they changed the rules last year so you can now rookie a player for a 3rd season.

Saw the game against Tassie, Gus has a long way to go as a ruckman. Looks like he may need a third rookie year before he figures it out properly.

There's an article on Steven Morris in my local paper this week, if anyone's interested I can post it. He's playing in the VFL under 23 interleague match this week, the curtain raiser to the VFL-WAFL match.

Results of the under 23 game:

North: 1.7 6.9 8.12 11.12 (78)
South: 5.1 8.3 12.5 16.8 (104)

Goals: North - Limbach 5, Anderson 2, Morgan, Colbert, Morris, Hardy.
South - Nahas 3, Wheelan 2, Rowe 2, Langford 2, Gilchrist, Johnston, Moles, Rosier, Whish-Wilson, Bonaddio, Scheetz.

Best: North - Limbach, Morris, Anderson, Iacobucci, Sewell, George.
South - Nahas, Rowe, Kelly, Johnson, Gilchrist, Garrubba.

Graham is that far off it .... he couldnt even be classified as a dud.
He's not a dud, he's a rookie, a young tall kid that the club hopes may develop into a ruckman.
Who knows, if he ever makes it he might even come on here and hang *smile* on some of the superstars that abuse him for even having the temerity to try and make it to footballs elite level.

He's a gun ::), He can't even get a kick at VFL level.
I like his tap work, But his skills average. Correct me if i'm wrong but we have more than our fair share in this area.

He could be gone end of season, If he does stay on the list it'll be through lack of ruckman types.

Ive spent some considerable time watching Gus after i called him for having one of the worst kicks ive seen at the beginning of 06, and to be frightfully frank and honest the kid, cant kick, is suspect overhead for his size, lacks footy smarts but can win a hit out...................... mmmmmmmmmmmmmm sounds like a gun to me.

The kids not good enough pure and simple as far as im concerned at the moment he has a long long long way to go to even remain at the Tigers next year.

Personally i dont think he warrants wasting a rookie spot for next year and most certainly does not deserve a senior list spot.

If the kid showed anything at all or even remotely looked capable he wouldve been elevated with our ghastly ruck situation in desperation but wasnt deemed good enough or a worthwhile exercise and for me that backs up my opinion of the kid.

I've watched Gus a couple of times and I can't disagree with your view on his abilities. Just can't see the point of hiding behind a keyboard and slagging off at a kid who was fortunate enough to be given an opportunity to chase an AFL career.
He's a rookie, a kid that someone at the Tiges thought might make it with a bit of development . If he gets there good luck to him, if not then thanks and see ya later. Why hang the dud tag on him?

Im not assassinating the kid personally and the kid does have a go which no one can go him for, however i am more having a crack at Miller for listing a kid that is not up to it which is not Gusses fault 99 out of a hundred arent good enough to play AFL however i am sure their were better options than GUs.
Good on the kid for getting a go but its just another wasted decision by Miller in my book.

Craig,
Gus went OK today. Certainly he would look out of it if he stepped into AFL now, but if he keeps improving....
He had a lot to go at the start of last year, but in his favour, has a lot less to go now to make it.
It's still to be seen if he will make it, but the boy looks to be giving it his best shot, and you can't ask for more than that.
One thing I will say, and anyone can see if they see him now, he's done his utmost to work on his body with the weights, and is coming along nicely.

Watched him against Sandy, he's still got a lot to learn, just looks a bit like a big awkward pelican at the moment. Probably still trying to co ordinate all those arms and legs of his.
Worked hard in the ruck and managed to sneak off his opponent a few times, got into space took his marks and managed to hit up a few short options. At least he managed not to rush or bomb away when he had the pill, took the time to look around and find someone.

MURRAY Bushranger Dawson Simpson is no shrinking violet.

The black belt karate champion and former army cadet is known around the club for his enthusiasm and dedication to football.

Simpson, at 207cm, is the tallest player in the TAC Cup competition.

The 18-year-old Bushranger says he was all arms and legs when he first arrived at Murray in 2005.

"It was a big learning curve for me last year but this year I feel like I've improved 50 to 100 per cent," Simpson said.

"I've put on weight and that's helped me to outmuscle my opponent.

"My ball-reading skills have come a long way too and I've just tried to do everything the coaches have asked of me."

Simpson has paired with teammate Ben Evoy this year to rotate through the forward line and ruck positions.

The 100kg ruckman was recently selected to represent the Victorian Country side in the under-18 AFL championships.

Bushrangers coach Peter Dean said Dawson had come a long way since his first training session with Murray.

"He hadn't had a lot of coaching before he arrived. Because he was so big he was able to do what he wanted to on the ground and get away with it," Dean said.

"He'd reach over the back for marks and reach over the back in ruck contests, and he'd have big adrenalin rushes and get excited which sometimes got him into trouble."

Dean attributes Simpson's increasing maturity to his work with Murray ruck coach David Ceglar.

"This year we've been trying to educate him on marking the ball more," Dean said.

"All of last year and a bit of this year he was only getting a handful of possessions so we just need him to take a few more marks."

What do reckon, Y&B?

I saw him play earlier in the year and he didnt impress me at all. Hopeless once the ball hit the deck, slow and a bit of a flat track bully.

big kid tho.
